Luka Dončić, Austin Reaves and Aggressive Defense Give Lakers a 120-106 Win Over Minnesota

The Lakers had a major confidence building win over the Knicks Sunday at Crypto.com, and Tuesday they hoped to send a message with another resounding win. Mission accomplished. In a game that started as a rock fight where neither team could seem to buy a bucket, the Lakers would find their stride and put some space between them and the Wolves, using a dominant third quarter to pull away and build a lead they'd never come close to giving up. Final score, 120-106. Luka Dončić finishes with 31/11/11, with a pair of steals and a block. Austin Reaves was excellent as well, nearly finishing with a triple double of his own - 31/7/8, with only one turnover. But those two had help. Deandre Ayton was excellent, with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Luke Kennard had 10 points, and Jake LaRavia was an inspiration, getting beat up left and right but still figuring out ways to contribute. So in the end, the Lakers pick up a big win that leaves them sitting in fourth in a crowded Western Conference, winners of six of their last seven games and a chance to get another on Thursday against an extremely mid Bulls team. Lakers Fans React to Bam Adebayo's 83 Point Game... Plus, Injuries Again an Issue?

The Lakers are rolling, and feeling pretty good about themselves. All the more reason to pay attention on Thursday against Chicago to what is undoubtedly a trap game. The Lakers have huge games just around the corner, with Houston, Denver, Orlando and more, so it'll be easy to overlook a Bulls team that has a couple decent players but overall is pretty darn lousy. That the Lakers will likely be without LeBron James and Marcus Smart only drives home the need to pay attention. Taking care of business is an important step in continuing the upward trajectory the team currently enjoys. From there, it's all about Bam Adebayo and his 83-point game on Tuesday against Washington. Lakers fans, like many NBA observers, didn't receive it well. Of course for Lakers fans, the significance of Kobe's 81-point game, which is now third in single game scoring, has meaning on multiple levels. More points, though, doesn't necessarily mean more impressive, and to say the least, what each of these games represents for the players themselves is different. Can the Lakers Build Momentum Vs. Minnesota, or was Sunday's Win a Fluke?

The Lakers rightly felt good about themselves following Sunday's win over the Knicks at home, playing arguably their best defensive game of the season, holding one of the league's best offensive teams under 100 points. For a team that had struggled mightily to play good ball against good opposition, it was a significant win in ways going beyond the standings. Now the challenge is to build on it, as another Western Conference contender comes to town. With a win over Minnesota, the Lakers could put themselves back in the top four in the Western Conference, and go a little farther not just in quieting the critics, but also giving themselves the sort of confidence boost that, if we're all being honest, would be beneficial. Of course, who plays is a big question. LeBron James is listed as questionable, adding a bruised hip to his list of ailments. Whether he plays or not, the Lakers will need big nights from Austin Reaves, who has been excellent in two games against Minnesota this year, and also supporting players like Deandre Ayton. Lakers Defense Fuels 110-97 Win Over New York, Luka Dončić Scores 35, Austin Reaves 25

Lakers fans (and NBA observers) have spent much of the year discounting the team's fairly impressive record by noting that most of the losses have come against the league's more successful teams. Often in blowout fashion. When will LA beat good the good teams? Well, Sunday the Knicks rolled into Crypto.com Arena as a Certified Good Team, and the Lakers used great defense, consistent effort and good-enough offensive performances to grind out a 110-97 win. It wasn't perfect, and the Lakers benefitted from cold shooting by the New York. But that's true of almost every game across the league. The Lakers controlled this one more or less throughout. They used strong physical play to frustrate the Knicks and particularly Jalen Brunson, for three quarters at least. In terms of individual performances, Luka Dončić paced the squad with 35 points. Austin Reaves came out aggressive and finished with 25. How important was Marcus Smart defensively? He was 1-10 from the floor, and finished a +26. Luke Kennard and Rui Hachimura combined for 25 points. The team put pressure on the rim, getting to the line 30 times, and kept turnovers (13) at a reasonable level. The offense definitely bogged down -- you noticed the absence of LeBron James -- but it was a nice twist for the team to be bailed out repeatedly by its defense. The Lakers Fight Hard, but Miss Opportunities In 120-113 Loss to Denver

The Lakers started Thursday's game about as poorly as you could imagine, failing to get a bucket and turning it over. Denver went up 11-0 before the Lakers even scratched. It meant the Lakers were playing uphill the rest of the way, and will be kicking themselves over the results. They chipped away and chipped away over the course of the game, and put themselves in a position to win, using strong defense that turned into offense. They got some timely shooting (until they didn't). But in the end, the hole they were trying to climb out of was too deep. Final score, 120-113. Luka Donćić scored 27 points, adding 11 boards and seven dimes. He also picked up what appeared to be a dubious 15th technical foul of the season. LeBron James and Austin Reaves each had an efficient 16, and Rui Hachimura had 16 as well. (His best game ina a while.) Jaxson Hayes, who played big minutes after Deandre Ayton left with a bum knee, piled up a bunch of dunks en route to 19 points. The Lakers will likely be kicking themselves for not finishing out the comeback, letting a game that ultimately was there for the taking get away.
