Japan Honestly

Sho_Zibot

Japan is often described as clean, polite, safe, and a little mysterious. All of that is true. But it's only half the story. Japan Honestly is a documentary channel that goes deeper — into the history, systems, and contradictions that shaped modern Japan. Not to tear down the image, but to understand what's actually behind it. The channel is structured as seasons. Each season picks one aspect of Japan's image and turns it inside out. Season 1: The Myth of Beautiful Japan Season 2: Tokyo After Dark Season 3: Forgotten Battles ...and more to come.

Why Japanese People Are So Polite (It's Not What You Think)

Everyone says Japanese people are the most polite in the world. But what if politeness isn't really about kindness? Japanese politeness is a system — a very old, very sophisticated system for managing hierarchy, navigating obligation, and saying one thing while meaning something else entirely. Once you understand the gap between tatemae (the public face) and honne (the true feeling), you start seeing this country completely differently. And here's the uncomfortable part: it's not just Japan. The English-speaking world is arriving at the same place — just a thousand years later. Spoiler: it wasn't Zen Buddhism.🎧 Prefer listening? Why Japan Is So Clean (It Wasn't Always)

Everyone says Japan is clean because of "the culture." But a hundred years ago, passengers on Tokyo streetcars were spitting on the floor, throwing garbage out the windows, and getting into fistfights. And sixty years ago, there was an island in Tokyo Bay buried under so much rotting garbage that it caught fire — and burned for two weeks straight. So what actually happened? In this episode, I trace the real history of cleanliness in Japan — from the chaos of Meiji-era streetcars, to a garbage war between two Tokyo districts, to the 1964 Olympics and the one emotion that drove it all.Spoiler: it wasn't Zen Buddhism. 🎧 Prefer listening?
