A Hong Kong Bounty With Joey Siu

Casey and Elisha chat with Joey Siu, a 25-year-old Hong Konger with a bounty on her head, after the Chinese Communist Party accused her of violating its draconian national security law. The World Enters a New Era - Wu'er Kaixi

In this episode, recorded at the 2022 Oslo Freedom Forum in Taiwan, we hear from Wu’er Kaixi (吾爾開希), general secretary of Taiwan's Parliamentary Human Rights Commission. Born in China as an Uyghur national, Wu’er Kaixi was one of the founders and key organizers of the 1989 Tiananmen student movement. Listed as No. 2 on the Chinese government’s most wanted student leaders after the June 4 massacre, Wu’er Kaixi fled the country to live in exile. He currently resides in Taiwan, where he remains an active human rights and democracy activist, political commentator, and columnist.

Human Development & Dictatorships: Cuban Healthcare and Other Myths

For decades, the Communist regime in Cuba has sold an image of a nation with high human development, boosted by its alleged world class healthcare system and education. However, reality tells a story of coercion, lies, and misery. The case of the Cuban dictatorship is not unique. Other regimes have positioned themselves as having achieved commendable levels of development: Chile under Pinochet, Kazakhstan under Nazarbayev, and numerous others. In this episode, economic historian and Assistant Professor at George Mason University Vincent Geloso discusses how authoritarianism is a poor vehicle for development, and how an expansion of rights and democracy has been a driving force behind the improvement in the lives of billions over the past century.
