JIF's New Branding, Hank Green's AI Policy, and YouTube Partner Changes

JIF peanut butter is making its logo move in fun ways, using its own wordmark as the canvas for changing into words like "MiX" and "TiP." 7Up rolled out a minimalist US can redesign with a new lime-forward recipe. Also, have you heard about the messy design history behind New York's Fearless Girl? It's a rabbit hole. The statue is launching official merch even though they sued the sculptor for doing that years ago, Hank Green established a clear AI policy for creators, YouTube doubled partner requirements, and LinkedIn is testing an anti-slop reporting button. NYC brings back street sweeping shame stickers, After Effects adds an AI expression assistant, Disney partners with TikTok on creator content, Reddit plans an audio player, and GoPro is in big trouble. ⚠️ This is the edited version of the livestream from Wednesday, August 12, 2026. If everything is designed retro, is anything retro? 7Up has a new stripped down retro redesign and a new flavor shift, JIF has some new motion typography, LinkedIn is testing a button to report AI slop, and After Effects now has a built in AI-assistant for coding expressions and scripts. Also we talk about NYC bringing back an old policy where they stick stickers to your car along with tickets, Reddit is making an audio player, KitBash3D acquires ArtStation, Disney partners with TikTok, and a new Font of the Week. ⚠️ This is the unedited live replay from the August 12, 2026 stream. LIVE | 50 State Flags Reimagined, Bethesda's New Logo, and NYC's Grocery Store RFP

The CFDA(Council of Fashion Designers of America - sounds terrifying) made redesigns of all 50 states + 6 US terrirories. Some of fashion's biggest names were part of the project, and now they're flying over Rockefeller Center for the next month. But you can check them out online with a cool website, so we did. Also this week on File New, Bethesda brought back the name "Bethesda Softworks" for its 40th anniversary and introduced this retro glowing logo that has a lot more personality than their existing helvetica-looking one. The studio Thirst redesigned the bee line for Marks & Spencer. It's focused around postage stamps and their country of origin's national animals. They're bright, but they somehow avoid looking like soda. Drizzy is a new brand of peanut butter in a squeeze bottle that is taking a playbook from Graza is coming to America. Seems like a new trend of elitest pantry items? The upcoming government NYC grocery stores are in the need of branding, so an RFP is out. Also, Slack's new out of office emoji set is really cute, the Grateful Dead is leaning into bootlegs with a great app design, Spider-Man: Brand New Day blew it out of the water, Nantucket's antique shop boasting a "No Influencers" sign, Google Earth pulled Nano Banana 2 after only a day, a free grid plugin called GridCraft, and the modernist architecture in House House's new game Big Walk. And of course, Font of the Week.⚠️ This is the unedited live replay from the August 5, 2026 stream. The Design of The 10 New EU Banknotes, John Oliver takes on Buc-ee's, and a sad AI Copyright Loss

The EU is redesigning their banknotes for the first time since 2002, and it's down to 10 options! Now we get to vote on the designs we like (even the Americans). I cut through a high level look at the 10 sets of designs and let you know my thoughts. Then John Oliver is rolling up his sleeves and taking on Buc-ee's! Must be nice to have "forget you" money. lol. But I'm glad he's doing it. Buc-ee's is notorious for bullying other companies out of animal mascots. HBO is notorious for winning court cases. In some more depressing news, a German court ruled that an AI generated comic version of a photographer's underwater dog photo does not infringe her copyright. Reddit is threatening to not renew its exclusive deal with Google (and other publications like USA Today, Politico and Business Insider are also mad as they see their traffic fall off a cliff), Substack is leaning on Pangram to detect AI text detector (which I don't trust), and Adam Mosseri says Instagram is banning pickup artist and prank content shot on Meta smart glasses. Some happy news: The Design Boss Summit is coming up and it's entirely free! LIVE | The EU Designs New Money, John Oliver attacks Buc-ee's, and a sad AI Copyright Loss

You can vote on the next EU bills! Yes, even if you're not an EU citizen. The Central Bank announced 10 design options for the new bills and opened the vote to anyone in the world. Let's take a look at each. They have 2 theme options: birds or people. The live poll overwhelmingly said birds: 93%. Also on this episode: John Oliver launched a Buc-Off merch line to taunt Buc-ee's into suing HBO over its beaver mascot lawsuits, and a German court decided that feeding a photographer's photo through AI to make a comic version doesn't infringe her copyright. That surprised me and reminded me of the Obama Hope poster and the Shepard Fairey fight with the AP. Reddit is debating whether to cut off Google,as is USA Today, Politico, and Business Insider. Substack added an AI text detector from Pangram. And Instagram vowed to ban prank videos filmed on smart glasses. We also cover some resources for motion designers - Citron is a dockable graph editor for After Effects, Tack Studio's released plugins that are new approaches to collect files and alignment. I also love to talk about the small details in life, and 2 creators both posted about clothing tags. Clayton Chambers and Intermission did some showcasing of them. And Font of the Week between La Mericana, Galahad and Viroqua. ⚠️ This is the unedited live replay from the July 29, 2026 stream. An optimized 20 minute version will be uploaded later this week. 🔍 IN THIS EPISODE: - The ECB's 10 euro banknote designs and survey is open through September 21 - John Oliver launches Buc-Off.com as he taunted Buc-ee's into suing HBO. All the proceeds go to Hunger Free America - A German court rules an AI image made from an underwater dog photo does not infringe the photographer's copyright - Why it feels similar to the Obama Hope poster, Shepard Fairey, and AP lawsuit - Reddit considers not renewing deal with Google and cutting them off citing a large traffic drop - Substack adds an AI text detector powered by Pangram - Instagram bans prank videos filmed on smart glasses - Get your free tickets to Designer Boss summit in August - Subscribe to Design Cache, my new newsletter! - Citron - a dockable graph editor for After Effects, - Tack Studio's rebuilt Collect Files and Align Layers - Clayton Chambers and Intermission showcase clothing tags as small design - FONT OF THE WEEK: La Mericana vs Galahad vs Viroqua 🔗 This week's links: https://ryanselvy.raindrop.page/july-29-2026-73421923 👑 Font of the Week Winners: https://ryanselvy.raindrop.page/font-of-the-week-winners-59521268 📰 Subscribe to my design newsletter Design Cache: https://ryanselvy.beehiiv.com ⭐️ Follow me around the internet YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@RyanSelvy Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/RyanSelvy Website: https://www.RyanSelvy.com 📌 All editorial and feature decisions are made by Ryan Selvy and do not reflect official opinions or endorsements by Adobe. Van Leeuwen Wins $23.8M, Coca-Cola's RED EVERYTHING Update, and the Fonts AI Can't Read

Van Leeuwen won $23.8 million from Rebel in a "dressing" lawsuit over ice cream pints. Coca-Cola is going all in on red. Red on every can regardless of flavor for its big design freshening up. I point out why that might be an issue next time you're at a barbeque. Liberty Mutual introduced a mascot from the Jim Henson Creature Shop, La La Land fixed Ryan Gosling's hand on the poster .(..a decade later), and Logo Zero traces a logo back to when it was selling cheese slicers and census machines. Later in the episode we look at two designers who coincidentally built typefaces so that AI can't read them. I also walk through the logo process behind my new weekly newsletter, The Design Cache, cover the After Effects guides update, and another font of the week.
