The High Stakes Game of Bargaining with the News

Just a few weeks ago, David Ellison and Paramount were staring down the barrel of a $7 million dollar per day fine for every day their merger with Warner Bros was not finalized, with a 12 state class-action antitrust lawsuit standing in the way. The states, led by California attorney general Rob Bonta, seemed to have Ellison backed into a corner. But then, at what seemed like the 11th hour, Bonta announced a settlement with Paramount that would allow the merger to go through. The deal closed this week, officially giving Trump allies David and his father Larry Ellison control over vast swaths of the entertainment industry, as well CBS News and CNN. Connecticut Attorney General William Tong is mad they didn’t fight harder. In an unusually frank interview, he reflects with Brian on what went wrong with their case, and what the new mega-company Skydance will mean for independent news in America. Also, check out our previous stories on media capture and the Ellison bromance with Trump. Question Everything has been nominated for six Signal Awards. Trump Runs Midterm Ads About Himself Fighting America’s “Enemies”

The White House released what it described as a “public service announcement” warning Americans of so-called enemies like communists and Marxists. But the TV spot is mostly a replay of a campaign ad Trump ran just two years ago with a new caption, “Paid For By The U.S. Government.” Where is the line between PSA and propaganda, especially so close to those big midterm elections where his party could lose control of one or both sides of Congress? Affordability remains high on voters’ minds, and the president says he’s helping by lowering fuel economy standards for U.S. automakers. He says that will make it cheaper for Americans to buy cars. But if there is relief there, is it outweighed by those sky-high prices at the pump that came with Trump’s war in Iran? And bipartisanship breaks out in the Senate with passage of a bill to regulate the big dollar world of college sports. We talk about the real winners and losers. The Supreme Court Starts Its New Term Politicized And Unpopular

The Supreme Court started its new term. On its docket are cases involving the president’s immigration policy and whether communities can sue fossil fuel companies over climate change. But the court may also be drawn into fights over the upcoming midterms at a time when public trust in the court is at historic lows. Plus, we talk about the civil suit brought against Cornell University over its handling of a 2024 alleged sexual assault. The victim says the university and local law enforcement failed to protect her. What role does the public play in pushing for justice, and what needs to change on college campuses? And this election, more Democratic candidates are campaigning on their Christian faith including James Talarico in Texas and Pastor Adam Hamilton in Kansas. We look at how they’re talking about it on the campaign trail, and if they can they gain ground among religious voters who tend to vote Republican. Flock Won’t Answer This One Town’s Simple Question

Flock Safety’s license plate cameras are in about 6,000 towns across the U.S. But lately, towns have been pulling out of their contracts after all sorts of creepy stories about cops using the cameras to spy on people in their personal lives. But in Tewksbury, Mass., residents have a different concern: they can’t get Flock to tell them what their town originally agreed to. For months, residents and town officials have been asking the company a simple question, which the company will not answer. That sends two residents down a Kafkaesque rabbit hole to figure out what Flock might be hiding. Question Everything has been nominated for six Signal Awards. Trump’s Media Ban Threatens The First Amendment

President Trump kicked three news organizations out of the White House, but a judge ordered them back in…for now. There are deeper issues here about freedom of the press and, however this plays out, understanding what to do when a brazen president tries to dictate the story of his presidency. President Trump’s foreign policy is also in the spotlight as he speaks at the UN and hosts China’s leader Xi Jinping. What is that foreign policy exactly? Trump launched a war in Iran and targeted Venezuela, but the Russia-Ukraine conflict drags on. If this is a president who promised that he could pick up the phone and influence any world leader, is it time for him to prove it with Vladimir Putin? Weekend Film Reviews: 'The Social Reckoning,' 'Musk'

Billionaire tech CEOs are villainized in two big releases this week: The Social Reckoning, a dramatization of Mark Zuckerberg’s showdown with a Facebook whistleblower, and Musk, a documentary about Elon Musk. Critics Amy Nicholson and Katie Walsh say that the films, while informative, turn unpleasant men into unpleasant viewing. Zuckerberg is portrayed before “his bro-y makeover,” Nicholson says, “which is sort of sad for Jeremy Strong, who just plays him as this very uptight, solemn, serious, dour, humorless, miserable little man.” According to Walsh, Musk is similarly grating in Musk, but she argues the film has at least some merit. “I do think it’s important that people know how much power he has,” Walsh says. “And how dumb he is.” Nicholson and Walsh also review Misty Green and Fjord.

Van Dyke Parks on Brian Wilson, Hollywood, and the authority of failure

This week, Van Dyke Parks sits down with The Business Showrunner Joshua Farnham to look back at a career that stretches from childhood acting to collaborating with Brian Wilson, and scoring films for Jack Nicholson. He also recalls his first arranging job, The Bare Necessities for Disney’s The Jungle Book, and how Harry Nilsson talked him into spending five months in Malta for Robert Altman’s Popeye. Plus, Kim Masters and Matt Belloni sort through who’s in and who’s out at Skydance. They discuss the unceremonious dismissal of Warner Bros. film chiefs Mike De Luca and Pamela Abdy, who’s taking their jobs, and the company’s promises for paying down its mountain of debt.

Carla Lalli Says Food Is A Feeling, from Expense Account

Sharing an episode of the new podcast Expense Account. We all know eating out in New York has become an extreme sport. If you treat dining out like a full-time obsession—and care about the scene just as much as what’s on the menu—you need to listen to Expense Account. Expense Account uses food as an entry point into bigger conversations about restaurants, culture, taste and how it all relates to life and the world at large. Hosted by J Lee, food critic at Emily Sundberg’s Feed Me media empire, J has one million opinions about food. But since he wants to hear everyone else’s take, J will talk to chefs, writers, musicians, actors and more. Like writer Molly Baz, chef Carla Lalli, and PBS host Pati Jinich. You’ll hear about their best meals and worst meals. Favorite spots around the world. And you might even get a peek inside their fridges to find out how they’re really eating. The conversations will start with food, but will always wind up somewhere else, because food is culture, and everybody eats. I’m going to play the first episode for you now. In it, J Lee talks with chef and author Carla Lalli about her journey from Shake Shack to Bon Appetit, her new cookbook, and why we should eat our feelings.
