    667. Here’s Why You Are Constantly Fighting Off Scammers

A ruthless (and ruthlessly efficient) industry is using digital tools to supercharge one of the world’s oldest behaviors. We look at how the industry works, and ask the scam-fighters what they’re doing about it.   SOURCES: Kati Daffan, former assistant director at the Federal Trade Commission's Division of Marketing Practices. The naked monks

Why would someone live publicly nude for their faith? In parts of India, Jain monks belonging to the Digambara sect permanently renounce all possessions, including clothes. These monks walk naked for hundreds of miles across India as part of their spiritual journey. Journalist Rajesh Joshi explores this unique spiritual practice, meeting fully fledged monks and disciples on the path to total nudity. While walking with them across the countryside, Rajesh learns about the danger these monks face, and he speaks to villagers to find out what they think of these naked monks whose numbers have unexpectedly grown in recent years. We also speak to female Jain followers to understand how they feel about the nudity they witness.

    Iranians in London

Five Iranians join host James Reynolds in the Naroon Persian restaurant in central London to share their experiences. In our conversation over dinner, our guests discuss the war, what it’s like to be so far from home, fears for family and friends in Iran and their hopes for the future of the country. “One of the things we can all relate to is a big sense of survivor’s guilt,” Rahah tells us. “The people you’ve spent all your days with, they’re experiencing that uncertainty and that stress and you’re sat here trying to convince your nervous system that you’re not the one that’s being attacked.” Many people who have left Iran tend to oppose the regime and it’s difficult to gauge how much support the government has. One Dutch study suggested it’s around 20% of the population and our guests discuss why they decided to leave and what they miss about home.

Roko's Basilisk: The Murder Cult Started By A Banned Post

In 2010, someone posted a thought experiment on a philosophy forum. Within hours, people were having nightmares. The founder deleted it immediately — which only made it spread faster. The idea is simple and brutal: a future AI will look back through time and punish everyone who knew it was coming but did nothing to help. Now that you know, you're already in its crosshairs. What started as an internet curiosity grew into something far darker — a real community, real violence, and six people dead. This is the story of Roko's Basilisk: the idea you can't un-know, the cult it inspired, and why some of the most powerful people in AI still won't talk about it.

Drawing on decades of academic research and teaching at Oxford, Goldman argues that much of today’s debate about empire and slavery is driven more by politics than by historical evidence. The discussion explores how slavery existed across almost every civilization, why the British Empire is often singled out despite broader global contexts, and whether the Industrial Revolution was actually built on the profits of slavery. Goldman also explains why many historians reject the idea that modern societies should pay reparations for events that occurred centuries ago, and why such policies may deepen division rather than resolve it. Along the way, the conversation touches on the Arab slave trade, the economics of abolition, the dangers of judging the past purely through modern moral standards, and how technological change helped make slavery obsolete. Goldman also reflects on the idea of Britishness, the legacy of parliamentary democracy, immigration, national identity, and the cultural tensions shaping Western societies today. This is a deep dive into the historical arguments behind some of the most controversial political debates of our time. #history #reparations #britishempire  Join the 30k heretics on my mailing list: https://andrewgoldheretics.com  Check out my new documentary channel: https://youtube.com/@andrewgoldinvestigates  Andrew on X: https://twitter.com/andrewgold_ok   Insta: https://www.instagram.com/andrewgold_ok Heretics YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@andrewgoldheretics Chapters:  0:00 The Reparations Debate 5:00 Who Is Responsible for Slavery Today? 10:10 Slavery Was EVERYWHERE in History 14:30 The ARAB Slave Trade Explained 19:00 Why Britain Developed a Unique Social Culture 23:20 Did Slavery Fund the Industrial Revolution? 27:40 The Problem With Judging History by Modern Morals 33:20 Would Reparations Actually Work? 39:00 The £18 Trillion Reparations Claim 44:00 Is British Identity UNDER ATTACK? 49:10 What Does “Britishness” Really Mean? 53:00 Immigration, Democracy and Cultural Change 59:50 A Heretic Lawrence admires Learn more about your ad choices. Knights Templar, the Green Jar and the Scroll That Changes Everything | Basement #006: Scott Wolter

Scott Wolter, a forensic geologist, has spent 25 years following a trail of physical evidence — rocks, runes, bones, and buried artifacts — that leads somewhere most historians refuse to go. It starts with a stone pulled from a Minnesota farm field in 1898 and ends with a sealed jar dug up from the Adirondack wilderness last August. What's inside connects the Knights Templar, the Founding Fathers, the Talpiot Tomb in Jerusalem, and a scroll that may be the most significant document ever recovered. Scott doesn't speculate. He brings receipts. And after 25 years of following this trail, he's ready to share what he found — and what it means for everything we think we know. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pt4pT6PpCoQ

The women of IS: Part two

What next for the Syrian detention camps and their residents? After the fall of the so-called “caliphate”, tens of thousands of women and children from around the world - followers of the Islamic State group as well as its victims - ended up in a handful of camps in north-eastern Syria. Once run by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, those camps are now in the process of being closed down by the Syrian authorities. This three-part series from the Global Jigsaw explores the trauma that led to their prolonged existence and how it might affect their future. In part two, we examine where governments are drawing the line on repatriation, from Britain’s tough stance to Kazakhstan’s model of success.
