Gay Men and the Fantasy Relationship

Have you ever been devastated by someone you barely dated? Found yourself unable to stop thinking about a situationship, an emotionally unavailable partner, or a relationship that never fully became real? In this episode of boy meets therapy, we explore the psychology of the fantasy relationship and why connections built on possibility can feel so emotionally powerful. This conversation dives into the unique kind of longing many gay men experience, especially after spending years watching relationships happen around them before getting the chance to participate in one themselves. We unpack why shorter relationships, mixed signals, and “what could have been” dynamics can leave such a lasting impact, and why grief in these situations often feels bigger than we expect. Drawing from psychology and research, this episode explores concepts like limerence, intermittent reinforcement, projection, idealization, and repetition compulsion to better understand why some relationships become psychologically consuming. This is not a conversation about being “delusional” or dramatic. It is a conversation about longing, attachment, hope, and the emotional meaning we assign to possibility. The Psychology of Gay Aging

What does aging mean in a community that often feels organized around youth, desirability, and reinvention? In this episode, Dustin explores the psychology of aging in the gay community and why it can feel different for many gay men. From “twink death” jokes and body image pressure to loneliness, chosen family, delayed development, and the fear of running out of time, we unpack what may actually sit underneath anxiety about getting older. Dustin also explores research on minority stress, LGBTQ+ aging, body image, and resilience, while discussing why many gay men feel simultaneously younger and older than they are, the psychological impact of coming out later in life, and what happens when desirability begins to shift. This episode is not just about aging. It is about identity, grief, friendship, reinvention, and what it means to build a life that can hold you over time. Beyond Coming Out: What Happens Next?

It's PRIDE month!  If you've ever wondered about the origins of Pride month in June, I'm gonna give you the shortest, most followable explanation. After, we're jumping right into coming out! For many Gay and Queer people, coming out is sold to us as the moment everything finally clicks. You stop hiding, become confident, find your people, start dating, and finally feel like yourself. But what happens when that is not the experience? In this episode, we explore the emotional reality that often comes after coming out. Why do so many LGBTQ+ people still feel lonely, disconnected, awkward, or behind even after finally being honest about who they are? Why can coming out feel freeing and confusing at the same time? I'm also going to introduce a new concept to you that I am calling The Gray Zone. This is a period of the realization that you can no longer live inauthentically, but you haven't formed a true sense of Self to return to. If you have ever wondered, “Why do I still feel lost even after coming out?” this episode is for you. The Psychology of Gay Code-Switching

What is code-switching, and how does it affect your mental health? In this solo episode, host Dustin explores the psychology of code-switching, the process of adjusting your behavior, personality, or identity depending on your environment. Using research from Minority Stress Theory and studies on identity and authenticity, we break down why people code-switch and how it can lead to stress, burnout, and a fragmented sense of self. We also discuss how code-switching shows up in LGBTQ spaces, including the pressure to perform masculinity and fit into social hierarchies within the gay community. If you’ve ever felt like a different version of yourself in different rooms, this episode will help you understand why and what it might be costing you. The War on Gay Femininity

Why is femininity often devalued among gay men and where do those preferences actually come from? In this episode, host Dustin breaks down the psychology of masculinity, femininity, and attraction using a clinical lens. Moving beyond surface-level “preference” debates, this conversation explores how gender expression, early social experiences, and cultural reinforcement shape what we’re drawn to and how we see ourselves. This episode is about understanding where our preferences come from and what they may be doing beneath the surface. *Research sources are posted to the boy meets therapy blog page Connect with boy meets therapy: Instagram: @boymeetstherapy TikTok: @boymeetstherapy Website with Free Resources: boymeetstherapy.com Blog: www.boymeetstherapy.com/blog Work with Me: www.boymeetstherapy.com/work-with-me Created and Produced by Dustin Oliver

Religious Trauma in the LGBTQ Community, Part 3: How to Move Forward

In Part 3 of this series, we focus on what it actually looks like to start shifting the patterns many LGBTQ people carry after growing up in environments where identity and belonging were in conflict. From self-monitoring and difficulty trusting yourself to complicated relationships with desire and discomfort, this episode breaks down how change happens in a way that’s realistic and grounded. We cover key shifts like moving out of constant self-evaluation, rebuilding trust in your own instincts, reinterpreting discomfort, and understanding your relationship to desire without judgment. We also explore deconstruction as a process of reclaiming internal authority, and the role of grief in acknowledging what wasn’t there. Religious Trauma in the LGBTQ Community, Part 2: What It Feels Like

Religious trauma doesn’t always show up in obvious ways. In Part 2 of this series, host and therapist Dustin speaks on how we move beyond definitions and patterns and focus on what religious trauma actually feels like. These are the experiences that often go unnamed but shape how you think, relate, and move through the world. For many LGBTQ people, it’s not just what you believe, it’s how you experience yourself day to day. A constant sense of being slightly off. Monitoring yourself in conversations. Questioning your instincts. Feeling disconnected from your body. Or noticing that desire and intimacy feel more complicated than they should. *This episode is safe for those still connected to their faith.
