Greg Skinner is a long time Muriwai resident, a local surfer, the president of Maori Bay Boardriders and the owner of local events production business Roller Coaster. Greg talks about his contribution to the recovery and restoration period in Muriwai: helping to coordinate the funerals for volunteer firefighters Dave van Zwanenberg and Craig Stevens, a paddle out for the boys, using his business equipment when needed and generally supporting locals and groups when they needed help in all the ways he could. We discuss awareness of weather events and actions being taken, what he’s learnt about himself and his business, the challenges on the night of the cyclone and the local volunteer firefighters’ awesome contributions. Jackie Mason has lived in Muriwai for more than 20 years in Domain Crescent and was a school teacher at the local school for many years. Jackie shares her experiences and perspectives of the night and the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle as an 80 year old woman living on her own. Muriwai Golf Club Responds: Cyclone Gabrielle Hits Muriwai. Ep. 8 Precipice Podcast.

Andrew Jackson is my guest in this episode. Andrew is the General manager of the Muriwai Links Golf Club and was manager at the time of Cyclone Gabrielle. He and his team were involved on the night of the cyclone and in the recovery and restoration of Muriwai. Andrew shares how the club prepared for the weather event and what they expected, how the golf club supported the surf club and the community on the night of the cyclone, supporting more than 60 people with accommodation, food and bedding, and he explains the challenges and considerations for the golf club in the immediate aftermath. Andrew talks about a fundraising event the golf club organised where $50,000 was raised for the fire brigade, what he has learnt through this experience as the golf club manager and what the club has done to prepare for a future disaster. He explains the support they received from council, how he sees the club as part of and a resource for the community and where the golf club is at now. Evacuate to the Surf Club: Cyclone Gabrielle Hits Muriwai. Ep 7 Precipice Podcast.

In this episode I speak with Kate Ward, the surf club facility manager and the administrator of the Muriwai volunteer lifeguard service and the Muriwai lifeguard services amenity trust. Kate is a resident of Waimauku, 8 kms away from Muriwai. Kate talks about the role of the surf club in Muriwai, some of the problems experienced at the surf club on the night of the cyclone, changes and upgrades that were made to the surf club and surrounding land to better prepare the facility for weather events, accessing government and local council relief funds and grants and dealing with FENZ and Auckland Emergency Management, We discuss providing accommodation at the facility, the food store and op shop set up at the club after the cyclone, exemptions for paying guests to the surf club, support from other organisations and local businesses, policies for charging some users after the cyclone and Kate shares the effects of the cyclone on commercial bookings and the financial stability for the surf club. Devastation on Domain: Cyclone Gabrielle Hits Muriwai. Ep. 6 Precipice Podcast.

Elaine McKnee, Charlotte Reynolds and Jessica McDonald have come together to join me in this episode, as they lived near each other in Domain Crescent and also worked together closely in the recovery period after the cyclone. We talk about the “Disaster Tours” created as a way to communicate local issues with MPs, councillors and media, creating the Restore Muriwai Instagram account as a means of communication to the community and beyond, temporary accommodation problems and stresses, looting of unoccupied houses and community reactions to the displaced people in need. Elaine shares tips for approaching and dealing with politicians and councillors, we discuss the projects that have evolved out of Restore Muriwai including Neighbourhood Net and the Emergency Plan project and the ways Cyclone Gabrielle has affected them all. Emergency Accomodation at the Campground: Cyclone Gabrielle Hits Muriwai. Ep 5 Precipice Podcast..

In this episode I speak with Denise Mackle and Cheryl Beattie. Together they are managers of the Muriwai Campground, and accommodated displaced families in the campground on the night of Cyclone Gabrielle and for months after the event. Cheryl and Denise talk about the impacts and logistics of providing emergency accommodation for families who couldn’t return to their homes, receiving and coordinating donations of caravans from families and organisations, the financial impact on the campground business, and applying for and receiving government and council funding and donations. They share some of the challenges and the highlights of hosting displaced families after the cyclone, what they learnt through this experience, advice they have for other communities, what they think Muriwai did well and what could have been improved from their point of view, and the negative side of the cordon for their business and the community. Never to Return: Cyclone Gabrielle Hits Muriwai. Ep.3 Precipice Podcast.

Caroline Bell Booth joins me in this episode. Caroline lost her home on the night of the cyclone and now lives in Wellington. She is a television director and used her skills to be an advocate and the so called ‘poster child’ for the Muriwai community. Caroline recounts the traumatic events she experienced on the night of Cyclone Gabrielle, the personal impacts of the disaster and the surprise issues she had with insurance. She explains her advocacy role, the importance of communities having a spokesperson and the challenging and gratifying aspects of being the face of a community at a time of crisis. Caroline talks about what she has noticed about herself since the disaster, why she felt she needed to leave Muriwai after the cyclone, how this experience has changed her relationship to land and safety and what she feels the Muriwai community did really well . A Home Buried by a Landslide: Cyclone Gabrielle Hits Muriwai. Ep 2 Precipice Podcast.

Eddie Wood joins me in this episode. Eddie is a surfer and kite surfer who came to Aotearoa NZ from the UK in 2012 and has lived in Muriwai for most of the time since then. His house came down with one of the biggest landslides in Motutara Road opposite the Muriwai Lodge on the night of cyclone Gabrielle. Eddie talks us through the events of the night of the cyclone at his place. He shares the trauma of discovering his friends volunteer firefighters Craig and Dave were trapped on his property, evacuating to the surf club and losing his family home, receiving support and assistance from the community, feelings of guilt, and choosing to stay in Muriwai and settle into a new home. Eddie talks about how this catastrophic event affected him, his family and his mental health. And he shares what cyclone gabrielle has taught him. In this episode I speak with Abe Dew. Abe was a long time Muriwai resident who was never to return to his home after the cyclone and now lives out of Muriwai in nearby Waimauku. He used his marketing and advertising strategy experience to support the recovery and restoration of Muriwai. Introducing Precipice

On the west coast of Aotearoa, New Zealand, less than an hour from central Auckland, is Muriwai Beach, a popular destination known for its black sand, surf, gannets and sunsets. A few years ago it was also home to around 1200 people, a small vibrant coastal community close to the land, the sea and each other. On the 13th of February 2023, Cyclone Gabrielle changed all of that. Flooding and landslides devastated the area, tearing through the landscape, damaging homes and claiming the lives of two local firefighters. Many residents were left facing an uncertain future. This podcast captures what happened on the night and in the days, months and years that followed. Welcome to Precipice. With me, your host Mandy Jakich. Across 26 episodes, I speak with fellow Muriwai locals, volunteers, and those involved in the emergency and recovery effort. Together they share their experiences of loss and upheaval, the impact on their lives, and the care, resolve, and community-led initiatives that helped Muriwai find a way forward.
