A Hong Kong company has stopped all operations at two of the ports at the Panama Canal. The leaders of China and Germany pledged to strengthen economic ties and free trade.         From   GERMANY- An interview with Vanessa Vanessa Vohs of University of Bundeswehr in Munich. Anthropic is an AI American company, with huge Department of Defense contracts. The Pentagon insists they should continue to use the AI for surveillance and autonomous weapons, as it was in the kidnapping of President Maduro in Venezuela. Anthropic is refusing to allow it.          From FRANCE- An interview with Jodie Ginsberg from the Committee to Protect Journalists. The CPJ just released a report on the widespread use of torture of Palestinian journalists in Israeli prisons. The report is entitled "We return from Hell."          From CUBA-  The US government continues to enforce and executive order  imposing sanctions and tariffs on any country attempting to help Cubans get oil supplies. The kidnapped Venezuelan President and First Lady have had a second court hearing in NY delayed until March 26. In the UK 12 activists with Palestine Action have been released on bail from prison after several months, and 6 were found not guilty of aggravated burglary. A Palestinian-American citizen, Nasrallah Abu Siyam was killed by Israeli settlers stealing sheep in the occupied West Bank. While many countries were relieved that the speech was less threatening than the one JD Vance delivered last year, many worried about Rubio's Trumpean view of nations and disregard for climate chaos.         From   FRANCE- 5 press reviews beginning with a landmark environmental trial against Total Energy in France, the Guardian reported a prediction of a 3 degree rise in global temperature in the future, articles about the passing of Jesse Jackson, and two press reviews about the public beating death of a right-wing activist by a group of antifascists in Lyon- the political divisions in Europe are intensifying.          From CUBA- A global coalition has confirmed the planned start of a flotilla to bring food, medicine and other supplies to Cuba, suffering under the US blockade of fuel- the UN has determined that the oil blockade is illegal. It has been 4 months since a ceasefire in Gaza was declared. 44 progressive politicians in Thailand are facing potential lifetime bans for wanting to change the royal insults law. Ukraine is expanding its drone strategy beyond its borders, with plans to produce and export its weaponized drones across Europe this year- Zelensky says the manufacturing of weapons is the largest industry in Ukraine.         From   FRANCE- 3 press reviews. First Zelensky announced plans for Spring elections and referendum on the peace deal. Then press from last Friday, before the Japanese snap elections called by the new ultra-conservative PM were held- the results were a landslide for her Liberal Democratic Party.  Then press on the Trump announcement of revoking the EPA endangerment finding, and bringing back burning coal as a priority for military energy. One of France 24s best interview shows is called Tete A Tete and the week the guest was Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories. She discusses current Israeli maneuvers strengthening control over the West Bank. The host asks her about accusations that she is an anti-Semite.          From GERMANY- The US blockade of fuel to Cuba has created many problems including loss of the ability to refuel commercial aircraft.          From CUBA-  Cuba denounced the blockade of fuel at the Human Rights Council in Geneva. More on Israel tightening controls on the Occupied West Bank. The Intercept reported that the Pentagon agreed to but $210 million worth of illegal cluster munitions from an Israeli firm. An interview with Susi Snyder from the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. How limited are the nuclear arsenals, how do hypersonic missiles change the situation, the US and Russia have both increased spending in the past few years, and how does China change the balance.         From   FRANCE- We start with 3 press reviews- first covering the backlash in Europe from the Epstein files, then Spain and many more European nations are preparing social media bans for children, and finally criticism of the Washington Post laying off a third of its staff. Rightwing populist Laura Fernandez won the presidential race in Costa Rica promising economic growth, a crackdown on drug crime, and completing construction of a prison modeled on El Salvadors notorious CECOT mega-prison. Human Rights Watch reported that Trump has intensified a downward spiral on human rights and American democracy.          From JAPAN- Record breaking snowfall is continuing in much of Japan. Trump has been stepping up pressure on Cuba, saying he is negotiating with their leaders, and the Wall St Journal reports that regime change is planned by the end of the year.          From CUBA-  Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced they will be sending humanitarian aid including fuel to Cuba. Henna Hundal, a researcher at Stanford School of Medicine discusses the consequences of this decision. When Trump withdrew near the end of his first term, Biden immediately rejoined. The unknown next president will not be in office for 3 years and their inclinations are uncertain.         From   JAPAN- Japan, like the US, is currently experiencing extreme snow and cold weather. Sales of new electric vehicles in the EU are rising rapidly. Trump threatened a 100% tariff on Canada if it makes a trade deal with China. Trump hinted at a secret new weapon used by the US military in the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Maduro and the first lady. Zelensky says his goal is to kill or wound 50,000 Russian soldiers per month.          From FRANCE- Press reviews on the US pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement, the Doomsday clock is moved closer than ever to global destruction, the cost of ICE and American violence, and immigration policy in Spain. An interview on Netanyahu declaring that there will never be a Palestinian state in the Gaza Strip.          From CUBA-  A recent survey in Europe found that the majority see the US President Trump as an enemy rather than a friend and ally. Russia says they are concerned about reports that the US wants to blockade oil supplies to Cuba. Trump's words, insults, and threats, followed by his slight retraction on Greenland,  has clearly damaged the relationship between the US and Europe. Trump was ridiculed in much of the press, not unlike his ridicule of other world leaders. Press on the Israeli crackdown on the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, including bulldozing the UN buildings in occupied Palestine. Oxfam released its annual report on wealth and poverty on Monday, pointing out that billionaires are accelerating the inequality gap.         From   GERMANY- Trump presented his proposed Board of Peace in Davos. It was to be a way to fix the crisis in destroyed Gaza, but has become what many suggest is an attempt at replacing the United Nations. He invited dozens of countries to sit on the board, which he is the lifetime chairman of the board, and Europe is by and large repulsed by it. An interview with Heba Aly, journalist and director of the United Nations Reform Coalition. She has worked for years to redirect the UN into becoming more effective at achieving its goals.          From CUBA- Venezuelans continue to denounce the US invasion and kidnapping of President Maduro and his wife.          From JAPAN-  At the beginning of the week the EU was considering putting over $100 billion in tariffs on the US in response to tariffs Trump threatened on EU countries defending Greenland. A just restarted nuclear power plant in central Japan was shutdown due to a malfunction during start up. He talks about what is driving the protestors. He says the economy has been ruined by severe sanctions from the US and Europe, turning Iran into a state of paupers.          From  FRANCE- First, how the Greenland press responded to the meeting between JD Vance and the foreign ministers of Greenland and Denmark. Mainly in response to Trump threats of seizing Greenland by military force, many members of NATO are deploying their troops to the island. The foreign ministers were keen to not escalate the situation but did not appear to think that their meeting would change Trump's mind.          From JAPAN- Japanese researchers are off on a mission attempting to mine rare earth minerals from mud on the deep sea floor, which is extremely dangerous to ocean life. Chinas export earnings have not been hurt by Trumps tariffs. There has been a dangerous escalation in the war on Ukraine following the failed drone attack on Putins residence.          From CUBA-  President Maduro sent out his first message through his son, after being kidnapped and held in a US prison. UN Secretary-General Guterres warned Netanyahu that he could  take Israel to the International Court of Justice for actions against UNRWA , the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine. Beginning with the South American press on the kidnapping of President Maduro by US military. A mysterious trader made a small fortune betting on the timing of the kidnapping of Maduro. How was the 5th anniversary of the Capitol riots reported in the US press and the White House website. The murder of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent in Minnesota received global news coverage. European leaders are responding to Trumps stated intent to  annex Greenland. France 24 put together a remarkable hour long special on the kidnapping of Maduro- here is one brief section, comments by Gabriel Hetland a professor at the University of Albany on how Cuba is being affected by the US seizure of Venezuelan oil.          From CUBA- First a report on President Maduro's first appearance in a US court and the death of at least 80 guards including 32 from Cuba. Israeli PM Netanyahu praised Trump for a perfect operation in Venezuela. Colombian President Petro posted on X that Latin America must unite, while Marco Rubio issued warnings to Cuba.          From JAPAN-  The Chinese and South Korean presidents held a summit in Beijing. The Interior Minister of Venezuela says at least 100 people were killed in the kidnapping of President Maduro. Many countries spoke out at the United Nations against the abduction of a head of state and the threats to Greenland. The US based Eurasia Group said that this years biggest risk is Trump dismantling checks on his power.
