You Should Play Doom & Age of Empires

Episode 23 and this one's different. No theory — just the two games that made me. When I think about the games that matter to me, they're always about other people, and these two are about my dad, who I lost to a heart attack over ten years ago. Doom is my whole family on the weekend, cousins and fathers trading high scores, me on his lap pointing out the blue doors, and the day I cracked the cheat codes and he looked at me like I was a prophet. Age of Empires is where I got my love of history — Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans, a voice I can still hear decades later — and the reason I care about stories and analysis at all. I talk about being an ADHD kid in the '90s before anyone had the words for it, the Man in the River scenario that still gives me nightmares, and the strange difficulty of describing the games that gave you your start — because how do you review the thing that's woven into who you are? These games are bittersweet now. They're also fundamentally me. Yozora Was Never in Charge

Episode 22 and I've been going back through every Yozora scene we have — all fourteen generous minutes of them — and the conclusion I keep landing on is that Yozora is a tool. A commander who meets someone who doesn't match his description and attacks anyway isn't commanding anything; that's enforcer behaviour. In this episode I work through the Nameless Star's claim that his heart has been replaced, why "unreality" is starting to look like a label rather than a description when Quadratum keeps running Reality's mechanics, and the red-and-blue heterochromia as 3D-glasses lenses — the ability to see and swap between planes. Then the big one: I don't think we labelled the right Re:Mind ending "good." Yozora dissolving into light reads as a being of lux, Sora crystallising reads as the stasis that actually ports him to Quadratum, and Luxord's car commentary — or pointed silence — splits the two endings into two very different arrivals. Plus the sleep count in KH4's marketing, why commander isn't even the top of the chain, the rook-not-queen problem, and whether Riku turning up ruins a solo Sora story — or whether Sora was only ever the bait to catch Riku. Who is the Lost Masters

Episode 21 and it's not the Lost Masters arc. It's the Lost Master arc. Singular. No S. And once you notice that, the whole question changes. In this episode I break the phrase down into its parts: what "lost" actually requires — you can't lose something you never had, so this is someone we've already met; why deaths in Union Cross might not count when Daybreak Town was a simulation restarted over and over to draw something out; why the Keyblade Graveyard having its name before the first Keyblade War we ever see is a chicken-and-egg problem the Hollow Bastion precedent makes worse; and why Ava — the obvious answer, the Master even Luxu shrugs about — has a form-mimicking ability that means she may not be absent at all. Then it gets philosophical: reformed selves aren't the same people, you don't step in the same river twice, "lost" is a moral declaration as often as a physical state — and the black sheep of this whole saga might be Xehanort himself. And underneath all of it, the possibility I can't shake: the Lost Master might not be a person at all. Why Sora Has an Apartment

Episode 20 and something's been pinging around in my head since the new KH4 trailer: Quadratum has no colour. Strelitzia is black and white. Sora is red and black. Luxord, black. Sigurd gets purple — and black. The city is greys and whites outside the advertising, the NPCs all dress business casual, and there are no kids, no animals, no hospitals, no schools, no parks — none of the life a city is supposed to contain. In this episode I think through the apartment that nobody seems to live in and why it matches neither Strelitzia's personality nor any real depiction of a Japanese home, why people who fear being swept up again don't decorate, the cog-in-the-machine reading where it doesn't matter that it's Sora — just what makes Sora useful, and how every other dark place in this series — San Fransokyo, The World That Never Was, Twilight Town — still had lights, trash cans, and personality. It's like somebody turned down the saturation in Quadratum. And right now, I'm leaning towards: very intentional. Strelitzia Is Alive — And It Breaks Everything

Episode 18 and Strelitzia is alive — which, by Kingdom Hearts' own rules, should be impossible. The first KH4 trailer told us Quadratum is an afterworld beyond the Final World, the place you reach once you've made peace. But Strelitzia died violently, unseen, and completely unresolved — the exact profile of the hearts we meet clinging to the Final World over far less. So in this episode I think through why she's there at all: why Quadratum is starting to look less like a new life and more like limbo, the pattern of who's being gathered there and why none of them should be, what "Lost Master" might actually be referring to now that the definition of a Master has quietly changed, and why the Master of Masters — a man who picks nobody idly — choosing Strelitzia has red flags all over it. Not everything with Strelitzia is as it seems. Books of Prophecy — The Winnie the Pooh Episode

Episode 18 and we're talking about Winnie the Pooh. Stay with me. Because the comments on the Maleficent theory kept circling back to Books of Prophecy and what could be in Luxu's box — and that means I finally get to dig into one of my favourite underexplored topics in this entire franchise. I think Pooh's book has been quietly demonstrating how Books of Prophecy work since Kingdom Hearts 1, and almost nobody has clocked it. In this episode I go through the strange treatment of Pooh's book across all three numbered games — the secrecy in KH1, the shift to a memory-based injury in KH2, and the genuinely odd hand-waviness from Merlin in KH3 that doesn't track with his character at all. I also dig into why Pooh's book has always required a specific, non-negotiable access mechanism — you have to go through Merlin, every time — and why I think that's our first real demonstration of what diving into a Book of Prophecy actually looks like. I ask whether Jiminy's Journal itself counts as a Book of Prophecy, given that it authors fixed-outcome events, and draw a direct parallel between the digitisation of Daybreak Town in Union Cross and what Mickey and the gang do in Coded. And I end with the box. What's actually in it, why it's always depicted as heavy in a universe full of magic, and why Pete and Maleficent literally digging up Pandora's Box in Thebes without realising what they're holding might be one of the funniest details in the entire series. Who is the Strongest Darkness?

Episode 8 and we're doing something a little different today. No theory dissection. No character files. No paradoxes. Just me talking about what I actually want Kingdom Hearts 4 to be. And I think some of it is going to surprise you. I want the series to slow down. I want Sora to lose access to his Keyblade and have to figure out who he is without it. I want a Persona-style daily life arc in Quadratum — a job, an apartment with Strelitzia, a day and night cycle, flashbacks to his adventures triggered by a duck in a park. I want him to sit with the isolation he has never once been allowed to sit with in fifteen years of adventuring. And I want the moment where Riku finally finds a way to bring him home — and Sora says no. In this episode I also dig into why the Foretellers make more sense as individual antagonists for each game in the arc than any single villain, why Xehanort's role in Kingdom Hearts 4 should be that of a witness rather than a participant, why Naminé deserves a Keyblade and Kairi deserves her own Drive Forms, and why the Ven and Strelitzia situation needs to be addressed — even if only in a single scene that only the people who know will understand. This is the Kingdom Hearts 4 I want. Let me know if you want the same. If you enjoy the podcast, following, leaving a review and dropping a comment genuinely helps it reach more people.
