Hi there, and welcome to 8 Minute Lives. In April 1888, a wealthy Swedish industrialist living in Paris opened a newspaper and, according to a story told ever since, read his own obituary. His brother Ludvig had died in Cannes, and a French paper had confused the two men. The headline it supposedly ran was brutal: "The merchant of death is dead." The article described a man who had grown rich by finding ways to kill more people, faster, than ever before. Historians have never actually located that obituary, so the story may be polished legend. But the man at its center, Alfred Nobel, genuinely worried about how the world would remember him. And what he did about that worry is why, every December, the most famous prizes on Earth are handed out in his name. Alfred Nobel was born in Stockholm in 1833, into a family teetering on the edge of ruin. His father Immanuel was an inventor and builder whose businesses kept collapsing. When Alfred was a small boy, Immanuel fled his creditors and eventually landed in St. Petersburg, the capital of imperial Russia, where his luck finally turned. He began manufacturing equipment for the Russian military, including underwater mines, and when the family joined him, the Nobels rose from poverty to comfort almost overnight. Alfred grew up sickly, bookish, and formidably clever. He never attended a university, but private tutors gave him fluency in five languages and a deep grounding in chemistry. As a teenager he was sent abroad to study, and in Paris he encountered something that would define his life: a new substance called nitroglycerin. It was an oily liquid, invented by an Italian chemist, with staggering explosive power. It was also terrifyingly unstable. Shake it, heat it, or drop it, and it might detonate. Its own inventor thought it was too dangerous to ever be useful. Alfred disagreed. This was the mid-nineteenth century, the great age of railways, tunnels, canals, and mines. The world was being blasted open with gunpowder, which was weak and inefficient. Whoever could tame nitroglycerin would hold the key to the industrial age. The taming came at a horrific price. In 1864, the Nobels' small workshop outside Stockholm exploded. Five people died, among them Alfred's younger brother Emil, just twenty years old. His father suffered a stroke soon after and never fully recovered. The city of Stockholm banned nitroglycerin experiments within its limits, so Alfred continued his work on a barge anchored in a lake. Most people would have stopped. Alfred pressed on, and within a few years he solved the problem twice over. First he invented the detonator, a small ignition device that made explosions controllable and reliable. Then, in 1867, came the breakthrough that made him famous. He found that if nitroglycerin was soaked into a porous substance called kieselguhr, it became a more stable explosive. You could mold it into sticks, drop it, even set it on fire, and it would only explode when you wanted it to. He named it dynamite, from the Greek word for power. Dynamite transformed the world with astonishing speed. It carved railway tunnels through the Alps, dug the foundations of modern cities, and blasted harbors and canals into existence. Demand was insatiable, and Nobel, who was as shrewd a businessman as he was a chemist, built an industrial empire to meet it. At his death he controlled more than ninety factories across about twenty countries, and he held more than 350 patents. He kept inventing to the end, producing gelignite and later ballistite, an early smokeless powder for military use. The man who blasted tunnels was now also, unmistakably, in the weapons business. Success made him rich beyond measure, and strangely rootless. He moved constantly between Paris, Scotland, Germany, and Italy, living out of laboratories and hotel rooms. Victor Hugo reportedly called him Europe's richest vagabond. He never married. He wrote melancholy letters describing himself as a lonely, driven creature, and he suffered from chronic ill health, including angina. In one of history's small ironies, his doctors prescribed nitroglycerin for his heart, the very substance that had made his fortune. He found this amusing, in a dark sort of way. There was one relationship that mattered enormously. In the 1870s he briefly employed an Austrian countess named Bertha Kinsky as a secretary. She left after a week to marry another man, but the two remained friends and correspondents for the rest of his life. As Bertha von Suttner, she became one of Europe's leading peace activists and the author of a famous anti-war novel. Their letters show Nobel wrestling honestly with what his inventions meant. He was skeptical of peace congresses and grand declarations. His own theory was deterrence: he once told her that his factories might end war sooner than her conventions, because the day two armies could annihilate each other in a second, civilized nations would recoil from war altogether. The twentieth century would test that theory with terrible results. Whether it was Bertha's influence, the sting of that supposed obituary, or the long loneliness of a man taking stock, something crystallized in Nobel's final years. He died of a stroke on December 10, 1896, at his villa in San Remo, Italy, attended only by servants. When his will was opened in Stockholm, it caused an uproar. Nobel had left the overwhelming bulk of his vast fortune, about 31.5 million Swedish kronor, to fund annual prizes for those who had conferred "the greatest benefit to humankind." Five prizes: physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and one for the champions of peace. His relatives were furious and contested the will. The Swedish king criticized it as unpatriotic, since the prizes were open to the whole world. It took Nobel's young assistant, Ragnar Sohlman, years of legal battles and quiet maneuvering to carry out his employer's wishes. The first prizes were finally awarded in 1901. Four years later, in 1905, the Peace Prize went to Bertha von Suttner. More than a century on, Nobel's gamble on his own memory has paid off completely. Say his name today and almost no one pictures dynamite or armaments. They picture laureates in Stockholm and Oslo, the highest honor human achievement can receive. Alfred Nobel spent his life mastering controlled explosions, deciding precisely when and where power would be released. His will was the last and greatest of them, timed to go off after his death, and it reshaped how the world rewards its best ideas. The merchant of death, if he was ever truly called that, made sure the label would never stick.
