    There's a rose that grows on a mountain in Saudi Arabia. They pick it before dawn, because sunlight pulls the oil straight out of the petals. It's one of the most expensive materials in perfumery — and it's the same flower I spent years avoiding. This is where we meet the real thing. Why the Taif and Bulgarian roses are the same species but not the same ingredient. Why the oud-rose marriage is a centuries-old cornerstone of the attar tradition, not a trend.     ASF Archive 2 | Kyphi and the Gods of Egypt: The Incense That Ran a Civilization | ASF: The Archive Ep. 2

    Kyphi was the most sacred incense in ancient Egypt. Burned every evening, in every temple, for thousands of years. Up to 16 ingredients, prepared over days while priests read spells over each one. This episode covers the three-incense daily schedule, the recipe carved into temple walls, Hatshepsut's expedition to bring back living myrrh trees, the workers who went on strike over their perfumed oil rations, and how fragrance carried the dead into the afterlife. When Tutankhamun's tomb was opened 3,300 years after his burial, the scent was still there. Next episode: The Incense Routes.     ASF Archive 1 | The First Perfumer in History Was a Woman

    The oldest named perfumer in the written record was a woman named Tappūtī-Bēlet-ekallim. She was making perfume in ancient Assyria over 3,200 years ago, and her recipe, recorded on a clay tablet now sitting in a Berlin museum, contains the earliest written description of distillation ever found. This is the first episode of ASF: The Archive, a deep dive companion to Arabian Scent Files tracing the direct ancestry of the Gulf perfume tradition. In this episode, we cover the full recipe from tablet KAR 220, the scholarly debate around her title and rank, the concept of survival bias and why she's famous while other ancient perfumers vanished, the role of fragrance in Mesopotamian religion (including a scene from the Epic of Gilgamesh where the gods gather to the smell of incense), and the unbroken 3,200-year chain connecting her oil-based techniques to the attar and bakhoor tradition the Gulf still wears today. Most online articles about Tappūtī repeat the same errors: calling her Babylonian (she was Assyrian), claiming her title meant "palace overseer" (scholars argue otherwise), and crediting her with inventing distillation (her tablet is the oldest written record, not the oldest practice).
