The 1982 Tylenol Poisonings - A Murder Case Unsealed

Criminal Behaviorology  Episode # 69 Title:  The 1982 Tylenol Poisonings - A Murder Case Unsealed The entire presentation can be found on the YouTube channel: @criminalbehaviorology - https://youtu.be/XhZ3TlUX1ns The views of our guests do not necessarily reflect those of Criminal Behaviorology, nor our sponsors.  Donate to Criminal Behaviorology Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/cw/u81930699 In 1982, America was in the grip of terror where an unknown assailant was poisoning Tylenol capsules with cyanide. Unsuspecting victims innocently tried to treat their ailments with a common pain medication, and ingested a fatal dose. We still feel the impact of these murders in the form of mandatory safety seals on medicine, milk, candy, and virtually every other kind of consumable product. In this episode Dr. Joseph Cibelli, a forensic psychologist, may have solved the case as an investigator, specialist, and the son of the possible Tylenol poisoner. Highlights: - Dr. Cibelli’s new book about the Tylenol poisonings. - A deathbed confession by Dr. Cibelli’s father while on hospice. - In Arlington Heights, Illinois, three members of one family are poisoned by Tylenol capsules. Three “martyrs.” - The broad concept of psychopathy. - The possible Tylenol poisoner’s experience of being accidentally poisoned by medicine in his own childhood. “I tasted death, and I don’t know that I was ever the same." - How Dr. Cibelli started putting the clues together at the time of the poisonings. - Possible “practice runs” of the poisonings done in advance of the known murders. - How it was discovered, early on in the case, that Tylenol capsules were used in the poisonings. - Dr. Cibelli’s “old school” method of geographic profiling. - The possibility that DNA, or other forms of forensic investigation, could solve the case all these years later. - The right to free speech in this day and age where information about poisonings and mass murder are described, point by point, in writings available to anyone. This extraordinary panel focused on behavior analytic supervision, featuring a discussion between Michael, Valeria, Lynn, and Joe about the challenges and best practices in supervising behavior analysts. This is a follow up to our discussion with Joe and Michael from the last episode. Highlights: The participants explored the importance of competency-based models, ethical considerations, and the need for ongoing supervision beyond initial skill acquisition. The high rate of behavior analysts leaving the field due to lack of proper support and supervision, emphasizing the need for structured training programs. The evolution of supervision practices, including the use of remote supervision and simulation models, while acknowledging the limitations of distance supervision. While supervision training is now being formally recognized by the BACB, more needs to be done to ensure effective supervision practices across the field.
