    Simple instrumentation and a powerful voice. Tracy Chapman’s 1988 debut album exploded on the scene when she appeared at Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday tribute concert, quickly gaining critical acclaim and breaking records. Informed by her childhood in Ohio as a working-class Black lesbian, this folk-inspired album still resonates heavily today. Her hit song ‘Fast Car’ came back into public consciousness when country singer Luke Combs covered it in 2023, leading Chapman to break additional records (first Black songwriter to ever win a country music association award: song of the year) and us wondering why that is still happening in this day and age… For a musician that is so private about her life, Tracy Chapman lays it all on the line with this brutally honest album. With references to Madonna, La bohème, Orpheus and Eurydice, Moulin Rouge! led the way for early aughts musicals. It's inspired Mr. Brightside, the Muppets Christmas Movie and Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir's gold medal winning routine in the 2018 Winter Olympics.
