    10 - Hanan

    Growing up in Saudi Arabia, Hanan was always made feel different due to her Somali heritage. But with a civil war raging back home, her family had nowhere else to go. After eventually being granted asylum in Ireland, she followed her dreams of becoming a filmmaker, and now works to document the culture and heritage of her homeland.     Growing up in Nigeria, David was always aware of the risks he faced as a mixed-race kid. So at 17, he travelled to London and sought asylum. That began a years-long journey navigating the immigration systems of the UK and Ireland, and going to desperate measures to avoid deportation.     Hailing from a mountainous region on the border between Albania and Greece, Kosta never felt fully accepted by either society, but the diversity of cuisines he grew up with inspired him to become a chef. Upon moving to Ireland, he has worked to foster a sense of community and cultural exchange through the dishes he creates.     Gustavo’s childhood dream was to become a fighter pilot in the Venezuelan army. Instead found himself studying economics and moving to Ireland.     Growing up in eastern Ukraine, Oksana liked nothing more than baking with her granny and going shopping with her older sister. But in 2014, a few months after she moved to Ireland, war broke out and the home she had just left had been changed forever. The interviews for this episode were recorded in summer/autumn 2021, before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the preceding intelligence warnings.
