Northern Lights: The DCOM they Don't Want you to see! Featuring Allison McClain Merrill

Disney Channel has made over 100 Original Movies — Halloweentown, High School Musical, Descendants. But there's one they pretend never happened. The very first one. Northern Lights premiered on August 23rd, 1997. It stars Academy Award winner Diane Keaton. It was executive produced by Meg Ryan. And Disney wants you to forget it exists. It's not on Disney+. It's not on YouTube. It's practically lost media. So I had to find out why. I tracked down a pop culture historian who'd actually seen it. I dug through the Disney Encyclopedia. I cross-referenced old TV schedules. I found a VHS tape from 1997. And what I discovered is a story about branding, rebranding, and how a channel accidentally created its first DCOM before it even knew what a DCOM was. Disney's Coke vs. Pepsi War... And the One Place Pepsi Still Won

Coke and Pepsi didn't just fight in grocery stores. For 35 years, the real battlefield was Disneyland. Before Coca-Cola became the only soda in the happiest place on Earth, the park was split down the middle. Pepsi got Frontierland and Adventureland. Coke owned Main Street and Fantasyland. And one counter in Tomorrowland sold both at the same time. Then Pepsi called Walt Disney. And the result? One of the most iconic rides in theme park history. This is the story of how two soda giants fought for the mouse — the World's Fair deal that changed everything, the 1990 takeover that locked Pepsi out for good, and the one place on earth you can still find a Pepsi hiding inside a Disney park. Disney Corporate Sponsorships That Accidentally Created Icons

From a purple dragon born out of a Kodak sponsorship to the world's most popular tortilla chip — sometimes the best Disney magic happens when nobody planned it…..and a little Corporate Sponsorship Synergy! In this video, we're looking at four accidental icons that only exist because a corporation made a deal with Disney: Figment, Orange Bird, Dole Whip, and Doritos. All started as products of a Disney Parks sponsorship. All ended up way bigger than the contracts that created them. Kodak, the company that helped us get Figment, was one of Disneyland's Original 33 sponsors — the companies that made the park possible in 1955. I'm launching a Patreon-exclusive series called Club 33 that digs into every single one of them. If you want to go deeper on the corporate histories that built Disneyland. Check it out by becoming a Patreon! https://patreon.com/synergylovescompany?utm_medium=unknown\&utm_source=join_link\&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator\&utm_content=copyLink My next video is already up over there too it’s all about Coke vs. Pepsi — the cola wars that played out inside Disneyland in 1955. McDonald's, Disney, and the 90's Happy Meal Battle!

McDonald's said no to Disney. Burger King said yes. And a 90s fast food war was born. Before Happy Meal toys and Disney-themed cups became background noise, a $40 million promotion disaster, a Splash Mountain delay, and a scrappy competitor nearly changed the entire landscape of Disney marketing. This is the story of how two burger giants fought for the right to put a mouse in your kid's meal — and how that rivalry shaped the toys, the nostalgia, and the partnerships we still see today. Kenny Ortega: From Dancer to Disney Legend

He's the man behind Descendants, High School Musical, Hocus Pocus, and Newsies, but Kenny Ortega's journey to becoming a Disney Legend started long before Mickey Mouse called. This is the story of the creative force Disney keeps turning to when they need to remind audiences why they fell in love with Disney magic. From starting out as a dancer in touring productions of Hair to choreographing music videos for Madonna and Elton John, stadium tours for Michael Jackson, and the iconic "Twist and Shout" sequence in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Kenny Ortega was shaping pop culture for a decade before Disney ever picked up the phone. When they finally did in 1988, it kicked off a 30-year partnership that would define childhoods for millions. What makes Ortega different is that he was never just a company man. He brought rock tours, Olympic ceremonies, and fountain choreography from the Vegas strip into everything he made for Disney. When Disney Made the Shared Universe Official

Disney Connected its own worlds: Descendants, Once Upon a Time, House of Mouse and More! For years, Disney fans have obsessively hunted for Easter eggs, building "Grand Unification Theories" to prove that every animated classic is connected. But while fans were busy connecting dots in the background, Disney was quietly building something much bigger: an official shared universe. In this episode of Synergy Loves Company, we’re moving beyond the hidden cameos and looking at the times Disney actually put their characters together on screen. We start with the cult-classic Saturday morning crossover, House of Mouse, where Mickey played host to every era of Disney animation under one roof. We’ll explore the high-stakes world of Once Upon a Time, where ABC transformed Storybrooke into a live-action landing spot for modern fairytales. Then, we look at the massive success of Descendants, the franchise that turned the next generation of villains into a multi-million dollar synergy machine. From the early days of Disney on Ice to the boardroom decisions that created the Disney Princess franchise, we’re breaking down how fan demand forced Disney to finally admit the truth: the shared universe is real. The Disney Story of America’s Bicentennial

From the tracks of the American Freedom Train to the catchy tunes of Schoolhouse Rock and the massive scale of America on Parade, Disney didn't just join the Bicentennial—they touched more celebrations than you know, and shaped how we Celebrate the Fourth of July. In 1976, America was a mess. Between the fallout of Vietnam, the Watergate scandal, and a crushing energy crisis, the country wasn’t exactly in a party mood for its 200th birthday. But while the federal government’s official plans were falling apart, Disney was quietly building a celebration that would define the Bicentennial for millions. In this episode, we explore how Disney Connects to the Bicentennial—from the planning of Liberty Square to the massive "America on Parade" that ran simultaneously on both coasts. We’ll look at the "Disney DNA" in Schoolhouse Rock, the moving walkways of the American Freedom Train, and how a 1976 science expo at Kennedy Space Center paved the way for EPCOT’s Horizons. Plus, we look ahead to America 250 to see how Disney is using its 1976 playbook to celebrate the nation’s next big milestone. In this episode, we discuss: - The Bicentennial Crisis:Why the official World’s Fair plan failed and how grassroots "Bicentennial Communities" took over. - Liberty Square’s Secret History: Why Disney’s Colonial land was actually a decade in the making. - The Freedom Train: The Disney legends who helped a 26-car steam locomotive bring history to 48 states. - Schoolhouse Rock: How Michael Eisner and the Bicentennial "History Rock" series created a Saturday morning legacy. - Third Century America: The forgotten NASA expo that inspired one of EPCOT’s most beloved pavilions, Horizons. - America on Parade: The logistics of running the same massive parade in two states at the exact same time. Chapters: 0:00 – Setting the Scene: America in 1976 0:31 – Origins of the Bicentennial Celebration 1:30 – Shifting the Bicentennial: From One Big Fair to Community Events 3:36 – Local Celebrations and Disney’s Early Involvement 4:09 – Liberty Square: Disney's Revolutionary Space 5:57 – The Liberty Bell in Liberty Square 7:32 – Bicentennial Pop Culture: Schoolhouse Rock and The Freedom Train 12:17 – Third Century America at Kennedy Space Center 14:00 – Disney’s Evolving Vision: From EPCOT to Horizons 15:43 – America on Parade: Disney’s Bicentennial Spectacle 20:26 – America 250: Disney’s New Nationwide Celebration Subscribe for more Disney connections: https://www.youtube.com/@SynergyLovesCompany?sub_confirmation=1 Podcast: Listen to Synergy Loves Company → https://synergylovescompany.com Support the Show: Shop official Synergy Loves Company merch → https://shop.synergylovescompany.com Affiliate Disclosure: Some links above may be affiliate links.
