Activist Heartbreak, with Daniela Tejas Miguez

On this episode, Daniela talks about the essay she wrote, “on heartbreak and longing and hope”.  We talk about how being an activist means getting your heart broken over and over, and having to recognise and tend to the heartbreak in order to create a sustainable movement. We discuss the value of political homes, how we practice hope, and the importance of having boundaries and allowing ourselves to takes breaks and rest from political work.

    Daniela Tejas Miguez (she/her):

Honouring Abortion Through Music: The Pasya Music Album

Honouring Abortion Through Music: The Pasya Music Album

The album was created as part of a campaign to decriminalise abortion in the Philippines, and is a collaboration between the Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights, the Filipino Free Thinkers, and the Philippine Safe Abortion Advocacy Network. The album is a collection of 12 songs of different genres written and performed by local Filipino artists. Pasya celebrates the strength of people who stand up against patriarchal and oppressive systems and exercise their body autonomy. It’s a call to all people who have had abortions, who have been silenced by stigma, to show them they are not alone. It’s a labour of love - a hug to everyone who has had an abortion.
On this episode I talk to Tao and MuroAmi, two Filipino artists who were part of the creation of Pasya. They share the process of creating the album, how music can be a medium to channel rage, the fear of speaking publicly about abortion in a country where abortion is criminalised, and the message they hope the album brings.

"What's An Abortion, Anyway?" A Children's Book about Abortion

"What's An Abortion, Anyway?" A Children's Book about Abortion

“What’s an Abortion, Anyway?” is a medically accurate, non-judgmental, and gender inclusive resource for young folks about abortion care. In this book, little ones will learn what an abortion is, some of the reasons people have abortions and a few of the ways people might feel about their abortions. On this episode, Carly Manes & Mar, creators of the book, talk about their experiences with writing the book and about the importance of talking to young people about abortion.
Mar (they/them) is a brown genderqueer cultural worker and full-spectrum doula. Under the name Emulsify, they create art that helps them heal, learn, advocate, and imagine new worlds. They believe all art is powerful and political. M lives in Brooklyn with their wife and spends a lot of time creating while snuggling their pups. Through their work, M has made incredible friendships, learned from brilliant peers, and found their home.
Carly Manes (she/her) is a white, queer, Jewish full-spectrum doula from New York. She has always believed that young people deserve transparency when it comes to information about their sexual health and bodies. Carly has been a practicing abortion doula for over six years, supporting more than 2,000 individuals during their in-clinic procedures. She loves the beach, chicken tenders, and her communities. She lives with her partner Mo and their playful pitbull Mickey.
