    The Enochian Language: Did John Dee Record the Speech of Angels?

    In the spring of 1583, John Dee, one of Elizabethan England’s leading mathematicians and collectors of manuscripts, began recording an unfamiliar alphabet revealed during scrying sessions with Edward Kelley. Kelley claimed to see beings in a crystal or reflective stone. Dee wrote down their messages, their symbols, and eventually words in what he called Angelical or Celestial Speech. Later generations gave it another name: Enochian. The surviving sixteenth-century manuscripts, including British Library Sloane MS 3188 and Sloane MS 3189, contain a twenty-one-character alphabet, translated invocations called the Angelic Keys, and vast letter grids associated with Liber Loagaeth, the Book of the Speech of God.
