Associate to Dissociation with Brainspotting (Part 1 with Dr David Grand)

Associate to Dissociation with Brainspotting (Part 1 with Dr David Grand)

This is part 1 of a 2 part series and an episode that is a little different from previous ones.  We could not resist sharing with you some fascinating insights from David Grand, the founder and developer of the remarkable Brainspotting Therapy.  In this episode you'll experience 3 tantalising clips from a recent Brainspotting Phase 4 training that David presented in conversation with Mark Grixti and a remarkable group from the Brainspotting community.  This episode takes a profound and insightful de-construction of the experience known as 'dissociation', which is a part of the natural and incredible human experience of survival and adaptation.  Far from being a 'disorder' David offers up a new and alternative away to conceptualise dissociation in the form of 'sensory gating'.  He  guides us through an exercise that you can experience first hand to deepen your understanding of the essential nature of the human filtration system to inhibit specific information in order to prioritise other senses to ensure survival.  As David affably sets out an alternative frame for our understanding of processing with dissociative barriers in our work, a liberation can be experienced with a refreshed appreciation of the miracle of the human system.  From this place our approaches to healing are imbued with positivity and potentiality that are central to the Brainspotting Neuro-Experiential Model.

Try This! Teenagers Can Thrive (with Kerry McWilliams)

Kerry is the Founder and CEO, Lightwork:  A charity with a mission to give everyone the knowledge, tools and skills to sail through life’s storms, flourish and thrive. She has more than 20 years frontline experience supporting people through emotional crises, life transitions and trauma recovery. Kerry has a busy private practice in Brainspotting alongside her work with young people and families,  and staff teams. In this enlightening episode, Kerry McWilliams reflects on her depth of experience with working with young people to explore and explain a brain wise approach to supporting teenagers to thrive emotionally.  Alongside her team, Kerry has researched the fundamentals of teenage emotional health from the perspective of the young people.  Through listening to the diversity and fluctuations in how young people engage with their emotions they developed a programme that accesses the deep brain and body to educate and empower young people in identifying, modulating and regulating emotions in a way that feels simple, accessible and rewarding.  Kerry introduces Emotional Freedom Techniques, Havening, Breathwork and Brainspotting as key approaches to somatic portals to deep and sustaining regulation.  These approaches were shown to provide significant emotional stabilisation at such a difficult time of life, which has collided with such a difficult time on this planet.  As children discover these natural forms of regulation their brains are sculpted to incorporate positive approaches to self healing which are both contagious and can facilitate a life long relationship with a healthy relationship to feelings and the self.

    Narcissism Re-envisioned (with Caroline Strawson)

    Narcissism Re-envisioned (with Caroline Strawson)

Due to popular demand we have Caroline Strawson back for another illuminating conversation.  Caroline is a therapist, coach, author, podcaster and trainer specialising in working with survivors of narcissistic abuse and domestic violence.  She speaks passionately and plainly about the importance of a non-pejorative understanding of narcissism, approaching the issue from a attachment aware, inter-personal, parts and body-based perspective.  In this episode you'll hear an open and authentic account of how some of Caroline's own experiences have caused her profound pain in the past and how these have become a vehicle for deep healing.  She speaks of a process that has been incredibly enriching and is also on-going.  We hear about the power of approaches such as Brainspotting in being able to process and heal wounds that have had to be suppressed out of need for survival.  She shares her experience on how it feels to meet the anxiety that can come with the prospect of leaving behind old ways of coping as we embark on the pathway to healing.  There's hope and encouragement to hear how  wounds are relational and are very difficult to negotiate alone, but can be facilitated through the compassionate and unique relationship in therapy.

The Parts We Play: Acting Reveals Reality (with Marta Rubio)

The Parts We Play: Acting Reveals Reality (with Marta Rubio)

This delightful conversation with Marta Rubio explores deep into the labyrinth of the human psyche.  Marta is an actor, director, yoga teacher and Gestalt therapist.  Her role in all of these domains is to move beyond the ego and the multitude of masks that we adopt in order to move closer to the true spiritual self to ameliorate connection and expression.  She shares how her fascinating career in performance has facilitated a journey into all parts of the human condition, including those that are joyful, painful and grotesque.  I was intrigued by the importance of the inter, as well as intra, relationships in meeting and managing parts which hold such powerful emotions that are often hidden away.  Comparisons of the connections between being a secure and trustworthy director and a parent were also explored as the attuned director moves between positions of leadership, protection, and uncertainty in close collaboration.  In this episode, Marta gives many access points through her expertise to appreciate the gifts that a non-dualistic perspective affords us in accessing a deeper comprehension to who we truly are.

Healing Moves From Attachment to Awareness (with Pablo Wilson)

Healing Moves From Attachment to Awareness (with Pablo Wilson)

This is a fascinating episode for all those that are truly interested in approaches to healing.  Sometimes I hear the question, "what is the mechanism for true healing?" I wonder if this question takes us further from the truth that we are seeking to discover. Sometimes we have to go backwards before we an go forwards.  In this episode Pablo's expertise in Eastern approaches to healing provide the scaffold for all things sacred in contemporary approaches to therapy.  Pablo is a yoga/meditation teacher and trainer in wisdom philosophies.  I am astounded by the resonance between the sutras of Pentanjali, written at the turn of the common era (BC to CE) and the much more recent fundamentals of Brainspotting Therapy (Dr David Grand).  We hear in this amazing episode how both approaches build on stillness, space, non-judgemental awareness, and non-duality.  We learn how the non-attachment to vikalpa (imaginal constructs) affords a transcendental state as the sometimes disruptive power of the egoic consciousness is inhibited .  This journey is a deep one and we hear how abhinivesha can transport people from a false identification with death and the temporary physical nature of the world in pursuit of a mocksha, or nirvana.  How's this for a fundamental response to those looking to heal from trauma and find enlightenment?!

Adoption: All is welcome here (with Brooke Randolph)

Adoption: All is welcome here (with Brooke Randolph)

My guest this episode is Brooke Randolph, author, speaker, and trainer.  She specialities are Adoption, Brainspotting, relationships, and developmental trauma. She's a a certified Imago Relationship Therapist, a Certified Brainspotting Trainer & Consultant, and coordinator for the groups Brainspotting Indy and Brainspotting with Adoption.

In this episode it is fascinating to hear how Brooke gives first hand insights into the complexity of adoption and childhood attachment trauma.  Through her experience and expertise in therapy she has developed an approach that seeks to facilitate natural healing in appreciation of the innate wisdom of the internal system and the limitless implicit wisdom therein.  Brooke speaks to the challenges of working with those with complex attachment trauma histories and how therapists and attachment figures can benefit from fully meeting the child's expression of their emotional world unconditionally to let their system feel heard, felt and to facilitate co-regulation.

She expands on how the pressures of time and expectation of outcome can inadvertently impede the sense of trust and safety in the therapeutic relationship.  Instead, she tells us, as we prioritise the relationship and accept that this takes time, then we create the conditions for deep, long-lasting healing and rewarding relationships.
