The worldbuilding here definitely shines—just speculative enough to be interesting, just realistic enough to feel believable. The script is also well balanced when it comes revealing the world’s lore. Any exposition feels earned or natural, but there’s never so much of it that the audience feels talked down to.
The characters are, on the whole, solidly acted and function well within the plot. While ‘the single mother and teenage daughter with a fraught relationship’ or ‘the overprotective father’ are fairly common staples of this kind of drama, their dialogue and performances serve to give them a surprising amount of depth given the show’s limited runtime.
The action scenes are, admittedly, the podcast’s weakest point. Getting good foley is hard, and Broken Road’s is… just alright. It’s functional, for sure, but nothing particularly immersive. Some episodes also struggle with the balance of Show vs. Tell; that’s, obviously, a hard line to toe in an audio drama, but there are a few occasions where a character blurts out something along the lines of “you shot me in the leg!” and it feels more for the audience’s benefit than a genuine reaction.
Overall, I think these creators would benefit greatly from a better budget—it’d give them access to better foley libraries, and allow for longer episodes that give the plot a bit more time to simmer. The first few episodes set up what seems to be a more complex long-form plot that quickly changes lanes into some admittedly-heartwarming 'found family’ content, but the pacing does suffer for the transition.
Maybe not my favourite podcast in the world, but definitely worth a listen!
