Had an open mind but disappointed
Listened to this podcast with an open mind and an interest in recovering from the aftermath of an extremely public wrong doing.
Whilst I see what Tom is trying to do in addressing the situation head on and trying to humanise himself, I feel that actually despite repeated apologies Tom lacks a lot of contrition which is extremely apparent given his attempts to make every conversation another stop in the apology tour vs having a two sided discussion with guests.
The episode with Jerry could have been very interesting and I really respected Jerry keeping Tom accountable - but I think with Tom, he clearly feels so hard done by by the public reaction - that it eclipses any true empathy for the situation and those involved because at the heart he feels that he doesn’t deserve the reaction he has gotten. This tone permeates every conversation and I don’t think Tom will ever win the public back over as he seems to want to do - until he truly stops feeling more sorry enough for himself than he does for the people in his life he has hurt.
He has the opportunity here to have some interesting conversations with interesting guests around the nature of fame and radical self actualisation, the effects of the public eye on relationships and how to form meaningful connections after you have burned yours to the ground and learn more about what you need… from the first few episodes I’m not sure he has got the right help to be able to do that yet.
