Series 2 Episode 1 - the start of something beautiful? Well we discuss Science Fiction which is a start!

Series 2 Episode 1 - the start of something beautiful? Well we discuss Science Fiction which is a start!

In this episode - the first of Series 2 - the panel, composed of the following people and recorded at a get together somewhere in Wales: Neil, Sam, Jim, Jeremy, Steve, Carl, Martin and me (Dave) try to tackle the big questions: what Role Playing Game system best handles the setting of Space and Science Fiction and also which role playing games system has the kind of character creation mechanics we most want to emulate in the Frankenstein's Sci-Fi RPG?

Well it was a mixed episode and proof positive that the twin temptations of drink and a convivial atmosphere can lead to some odd outcomes! Hope you enjoyed the episode and that it is the start of something beautiful or at least "full of stars".

Episode 13 A review of the playtest and the live recording of the show at Grogmeet 2021

Episode 13 A review of the playtest and the live recording of the show at Grogmeet 2021

In this episode of the quest to manufacture a Role Playing Game from the best parts of ALL the other Role Playing Games out there we review how the playtest went with the playtesters from Grogmeet: Mark, Mark, Mike, Matt and Neil - gentlemen all!

In the second half of the pod we have the actual LIVE recording of the podcast in front of a hand picked squad of Grognards who had assembled to play RPGs and found themselves at a recording of a podcast gameshow! Thankfully they all joined in and I think had a great time. Thanks to our panelists Ian Cooper (line editor for Chaosium of Heroquest https://www.chaosium.com/heroquest-2/ ) Paul Fricker of the Good Friends of Jackson Elias https://blasphemoustomes.com/ and Dirk the Dice and Judge Blythy of the always superb Grognard Files https://thegrognardfiles.com/

So, join us as we discover - did the game actually work? And what supplement should I launch first in support of the game? (As well as a GMs screen of course).

Science Fiction will come next year! Keep 'em peeled.

    Episode 11 (maybe 10a?)

    Episode 11 (maybe 10a?)

In this episode we focus on the challenge of how we start the process of generating characters from systems that have so little in common!

I'm joined this week by the wonderful panel comprised of Ralph, Kat, Jim and Mark - who we bamboozled slightly by starting early and without him!

Games under discussion this episode are:

    Limnal - https://www.modiphius.net/collections/liminal

Beyond the Wall gets a good mention

Call of Cthulhu - which we completely mis-remember the rules of https://www.chaosium.com/call-of-cthulhu-rpg/

    Vampire (of) the Masquerade https://www.worldofdarkness.com/vampire-the-masquerade

I'll put the dice roll stats on the website - https://www.frankensteinrpg.co.uk/

Once again huge thanks to the Fabulous Freak Fandango Orchestra for lending us their track "The Gypsy Song" through the open content license. Their album is the superb "Wild Goats and Useless Heroes" (so apt!) https://freakfandango.bandcamp.com/ for all their supper work.

    Thanks again for downloading!!!

Lichway Ed ,

This really shouldn’t work as a podcast

Role playing game rules are dull, they’re the least interesting part of any RPG. They’re either too complex, too simple, or just get in the way of having fun whilst you wait for someone to find the rules for how a fireball works. Conceptually, this should be as interesting as listening to four friends discussing the instruction manuals for different brands of coffee machines.

But it’s not. Probably like all the best podcasts, the joy and enthusiasm of the participants makes this a real pleasure to listen to. Contributors are genuinely arguing the case for their favourite rules, and the host and Traveller RPG fanboy, Dave, adds humour and a sense of direction.

The whole thing also feels like a massive extended surreal joke.

@DrewBk ,

Great listening

This is a pretty geeky podcast for fans of RPGs. In depth discussion and debate of different aspects of RPGs. The host and guests are very knowledgeable and humorous. Definitely recommended.

Asako Soh ,

Super fun discussions of making a monster RPG

Our Dr Frankenstein, Dave, is stitching together bits of other RPG s to create the ultimate RPG. Each episode is based on two particular themes and the host chats over a shortlist of mechanics and approaches from an expert panel. Great discussions but even more enjoyable is the social medial push back on the decisions made! Really enjoyable and dangerous for the wallet as get tempted to buy the games mentioned,
