    65: The Southern Trout Stalker I - Colby Trow/ Virginia/ Mossy Creek

I fell in love with Mossy Creek : a true limestone spring creek in the style of the hallowed Letort, back in my Washington D.C. hotel days. It’s the Shenandoah section of the limestone rich Cumberland Valley that goes down the Amish country/ Lee Highway Rte.11.  As it runs down from Mt Solon in the Alleghenies , Mossy and its selective browns and stunningly colored rainbows sip bwo’s, sulphers, slash terrestrials and maul sculpins year-round. It’s the closest thing to a big sky Montana/ Idaho/ Wyoming vista and experience you will witness east of the Mississippi.  Couple the other spring creeks he has there  with all the Blue Ridge / Allegheny Mountain indigenous brook trout streams with classic mayfly hatches that number in the in the hundreds, and you have hidden gems that ooze beauty. Couple those with great trout tailwaters, and the amazing bass fishing of the Shenandoah and James, and you have truly one of the greatest fly fishing states in the country! I cannot speak more superlatives about what my very good friend Colby has to offer at Mossy Creek Fly Fishing in Harrisonburg. His boutique fly shop is a true Civil War period historical monument and must be seen. Plus, he will show you bass that embody all I have written about in selectivity.  Do you enjoy the show?  Please take a moment to like and leave a 5 star review on Apple Podcasts and Spotify! 63: Chasing Dame Juliana - Lucinda Ewin. A U.K.’s Lady’s Passion for Salmon and Trout [Trout Stalker Series]

In the U.K., fly fishing has always been a proper gentleman’s game. Women were sort of looked down on at the elite chalk stream clubs and beats. Lucinda Ewin is a real, passionate, sincere and simply fabulous fly angler in love with Atlantic salmon, sea trout, and brown trout. She is paying her dues which is something so rare in today’s agenda filled, social media twisted ‘same old’ monotony. Sometimes the more knowledge and wisdom we accrue the more we think we must prove a point. We so quickly forget that at one time we are all beginners/hacks/ and most of us still are in the bigger picture of it all. Lucinda is the breath of fresh air of someone loving what she does as a fly tackle rep, being a mother, traveling and photographing her journey. She still has that spark and passion while studying the Spey cast, understanding brown trout, hatches and how amazing sea trout are - all my Nexus book loves. I couldn’t wait for this podcast to be aired…enjoy the passion that is Lucinda Notes….. let her rip!!!! Do you enjoy the show? 62: Selective Trout - A British Perspective- Peter Hayes/ Don Stazicker. Their Book: “The Flies that Trout Prefer”

Next up on the ‘Trout Stalker’ series is a topic I adore dearly. The “British Invasion” and their iconic contributions to fly fishing for trout has come in 4 waves. First,  it was the genesis and invention of the sport in Hertfordshire in 1496 with Dame Juliana and Walton with the “ A Treatyse of Fysshynge wyth an Angle” Then it was the foundation of modern fly fishing on the Hampshire/ Wiltshire chalk streams with Marryat, Halford, Skues and Sawyer. The modern era saw the introspective works of Goddard ( Goddard Caddis fame) and Clarke with the epic work “ The Trout and the Fly”. But this 4 wave is perhaps the most groundbreaking and introspective of them all. Today, authors/  anglers and trout behaviorists:  Peter Hayes and Don Stazicker, with their underwater cameras and introspective, highly empirical prose, have invaded a trout’s aquatic dining room and gives us a confirmation of what the American masters have learned about trout feeding behavior. Their new book: “ The Flies that Trout Prefer” is a modern masterpiece and a must for every trout angler. It probes the world of meniscus chaos:  ‘junk flies/ shucks’ and how still borns/ cripples ( casualties) emergers, and why some of the most unruly and awkward flies appeal to a trout’s fancy rather than the most perfectly tied ones. No serious fly angler can miss this podcast and not have this book ! 58: The Letort Spring Run Legacy - Neil Sunday [Part 1]

Trout Stalker Series Part 1 It is one of the most iconic waters of modern American Fly Fishing history. The Letort is the American chalk stream/ limestone spring creek equivalent to the River’s Test and Itchen in England. In the Cumberland Valley it was Marinaro, Fox, Shenk, Koch and so many other Letort Regulars that created a legacy of terrestrials, dry fly matching the hatch , minutiae, stream conservation work - the innovations are endless. Most importantly it’s about a wild Loch Leven strain brown that has endured one chemical spill after another for decades. The lady flows through a growing urban sprawl, strip malls and housing projects, gets her ground water sucked out of it, and yet it’s very resilient and migratory browns have developed a life survival strategy to combat all the hardships thrown at it including climate change.  Join guest river keeper and guide: Neil Sunday, and host Matt Supinski as they discuss in part 1 its history dating back to the French and Indian war, its watershed from head to tail and beyond; and it’s modern legacy. The main point of the podcast is conservation and how to protect the Letort and get it more friends. Part II is about the unique wild strain browns, becoming the ultimate stalker in the hunt for Mr. Bigs- then hatches, tactics, flies , tackle for spring creeks etc … don’t miss this one! 57: Steelhead Conservancy - John McMillan - The Dry Line Summer Steelheading Legacy

Chasing Chrome Series - Part 5 I have  guided and fished Great Lakes summer steelhead now for almost 36 years. Between my brief hotel career stints on the West Coast and Indiana, I have written and explored more about our Great Lakes Summer Skamania steelhead than perhaps no one else. Looking for answers and the history of Washington State’s iconic Washougal River’s Skamania strain fish’s introduction into Lake Michigan by Indiana, brought me to one of the finest books ever written on those fish: Dry Line Steelhead by Bill McMillan. Join me and my guest John: Bill’s  son, as we discuss John’s epic steelhead conservation work and fighting for the plight of the most beautiful migratory salmonid fish that swims- Washington State’s Washougal steelhead. John is President of the West Coast based Conservation Angler group. We discuss his dad and the fishing legacy of dry line steelheading today- don’t miss this one!
