Karim Kronfli: The one with the Sizzling Summer Script!

In ep 181 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Karim Kronfli joins Sam and Mark to talk about getting to grips with a summer advertorial that's full of alliteration, with no time constraint. We have to be playful without going over the top. It's all about a script being "knowing" and as a voice actor having to give a nod and a wink to your audience. We also have an amazing dramatic piece between a man who's been in jail and his estranged daughter. Our fun facts are about reality TV, big West End shows and a tease of an NDA! Our VO question this week is all about what aspects of performance you take from stage work to the mic. Get involved! Have you got a Wildcard suggestion that we should try or an idea for the show? Send it to us via Mark or Sam's social media or email it directly to podcast@britishvoiceover.co.uk Script 1 And right now, as the world slows for the summer and the sun sets a little later… there's no better time to slip away with a story of secrets, lies and that final, fatal twist. Our Holiday Crime Collection brings together 100 years of murderous mischief — from breezy beachside killings to snowbound scandals in country hotels. Whether you prefer your detectives with deerstalkers or dark pasts, there’s something in our summer stack to keep your suitcase suspiciously heavy. Script 2 We are responsible for our own actions. No one else. Like the no one else sitting across from me who got themselves thrown out on the street. Or the no one else took a dead-end job at a petrol station instead of going to vocational school and learning something useful. Or the no one else what got themselves involved with drugs and spent two episodes in rehab. You spent way too much time feeling sorry for yourself. Paul Cartwright: The one WITHOUT the Crafting and Polishing!

In ep 180 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Paul Cartwright joins Sam and Mark to talk about trusting your senses as a VA to do the work in a script without actively trying to do the work. We explore a commercial script using Paul's theory of pulling back on the crafting and being less voiceovery and less polished to make a real connection with the audience. As an artist, your body is naturally going to add pitch and depth and resonance and highs and lows... so what Paul shows us is comparable to the difference between stage acting and film acting - and it can be a rough uncomfortable ride. We also look at how to create a story arc for a famous tale re-told, but telling it in an authentic way, and our wildcards include Jack's giant, an old lady and a nervous best man delivering a speech. Get involved! Have you got a Wildcard suggestion that we should try or an idea for the show? For those who already know what life is all about. Script 2 Long ago, in a sleepy village on the outskirts of a busy town, there lived a boy named Jack. Jack's father disappeared when he was a child, and all Jack could remember of him was the joy of his laughter and the tenderness of his voice: But for Jack and his widowed mother, things were what they were: they were poor, and their farm was failing. But Jack wasn't worried. He was an unusual boy, cheerful to a fault and rarely complained. That, and he had a secret... He could speak to animals. SJ Harris: The one with the Full Circle Moment!

In ep 179 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, transfemme voice actor SJ Harris joins Sam and Mark to talk about how to bring out a character's venom whilst being very insular, and how to communicate directly with a player as a character in a video game. There's a full circle moment where we reflect that paying it back is what we should all do. We learn how to play a hesitant character in an unusual piece of e-learning, and chat about how an ellipsisis... is a very powerful piece of punctuation! Our VO question this week is all about following your dreams! Get involved! Have you got a Wildcard suggestion that we should try or an idea for the show? Send it to us via Mark or Sam's social media or email it directly to podcast@britishvoiceover.co.uk Script 1 A lot of my issues come with like decision making, but also memory and memory loss you know. I get this kind of brain fog. I can’t think of the right thing or say the right word… it's slightly fuzzy a lot of the time. And I have to kind of have it explained, have to things explained in like two or three ways to then fully kind of understand it… yeah. Sometimes, my thoughts move so quickly that I can't like put together sentences or I…I don't know, I think I just - I struggle to say things, so I'll let other people sort of answer for me. Script 2 How long has it been out there? Centuries? Millennia? I lost count when the silence stopped feeling like punishment… and started feeling like patience. You smell like it, you know. The living world. Warm air, sunlight… hope. I had almost forgotten what those things felt like. One day this door will open the wrong way. And when it does… I will step into the world she calls hers, the world she nurtures, protects, and pretends to love. And I will remind it of something she has tried so desperately to erase… that the crown of life was never meant for her. Trev Fleming: The one with the Thinking Words!

In ep 178 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Trev Fleming joins Sam and Mark to talk about splitting the difference between dynamic and powerful to create a compelling read and how strict timings can impact a performance. We learn how to teach something whilst being conversational in a long e-learning course... and why being clean with no 'ums' and 'errs' is a presenter trait rather than an actor's one. Did you know other languages have "thinking words" where we just put in an 'umm' or an 'aah'? Our fun facts cover Geography graduates, smashing pedal bikes, and a slicing knife nightmare that might make you feel queasy. Our wildcards are a lizard person from the centre of the earth, an irate football dad on the sidelines, and a dog who gets excited when he hears the word walk! Our VO question this week is all about whether actors get a better reaction from casting directors when they stop trying to appear impressive. Get involved! Have you got a Wildcard suggestion that we should try or an idea for the show? Send it to us via Mark or Sam's social media or email it directly to podcast@britishvoiceover.co.uk Script 1 Bill Burr, one of the biggest comedians on the planet, has had a podcast for the last 10 years on YouTube. This is his thumbnail. The same one, each and every time. For me, as a big fan, I immediately recognise it when I see it mixed in with other videos on the recommended sidebar. Is this thumbnail good? No, it’s actually modest, at best! It does show his face and you can clearly read the text, but that’s about it. Still, this style works for him. He doesn’t want to hire a person who handles his graphics, he just wants to put his content out there ASAP. Script 2 To meet these challenges, we designed precise, dynamic, evolving adaptations. A soundtrack that adjusts in real time to the lights, the pace, and the energy of the arena. This is not just background music. It’s a signature. A wave that resonates through the players’ entrance show. That elevates the ceremonies. That fuels digital platforms and social media. A sound that amplifies the experience—and the power of the competition. Whether it’s TV, Stage, Film, Greenscreen, Prosthetics, Mocap/P-Cap - Trev’s your guy. He’s a professional nerd and has voiced game trailers, indie games and Triple A titles, IVR, TV and radio commercials, audiobooks, audio drama and has been the voice of God in numerous stage productions.
