Richard Savage: The one with the Bitchy Narrator!
In this episode of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Richard Savage joins Sam and Mark to talk about creating the Wildcard Generator, playing a character who's out of vision, and bringing a dry script to life by humanising it.
Our VO question this week is all about how you get a pronunciation right first time.

Script 1
Airspace change is complex. It’s highly technical and often difficult to understand. The MAT1212 guidance isn’t easy to navigate, along with the expectation to co-ordinate with neighbouring airports.
With the bar set high for stage 3 consultation, political engagement is key.
Local and surrounding authorities have strong opinions - not to mention high profile MPs.
And with the potential change of Government before January 2025, the political picture is complicated.
Script 2
Let me guess. Housemate used all your toothpaste again? We can’t have that.
She thinks she can just get away with anything doesn’t she? She knows you won’t say anything because she knows you know it would only make things awkward. And neither of you want that do you?
Here’s what you do. Edible sugar paste. Fairly cheap online. Mix with a teaspoon of mint flavouring.
The result is something that looks like toothpaste… tastes like toothpaste - but is detrimental for your gums.

About our guest:
Originally from the UK, but moved to the Czech Republic in 2002 to become an English teacher, Richard became a voice over artist in 2010, reading audio guides for destinations around the Czech Republic. He has gone on to voice countless audio guides and corporate promos, many of which he also translates and proofreads, as well as doing radio imaging, commercials, e-learning, and character voices. Being a working musician meant that Richard already had the studio equipment and audio engineering know-how when the pandemic hit in 2020, and now he records and produces voice overs almost exclusively from home.

Script 1
I don’t often get foxed, but I came mighty close on Sarabande for Dead Lovers. Now, the filming was done in Prague. And there’s a scene in it - the retreat from war. Now, to have a retreat, you need an army. And when you have an army, that means 300 extras. And when you have 300 extras, you need uniforms, tricorn hats and 300 pairs of buckled shoes. Clothes were still on ration, but I managed to get everything ... except the shoes. Oh, you could get two pairs here, half a dozen there. But 300?
Script 2
[Reporters talk in German, Italian and French] [Neil Armstrong recording]
From walking on the moon [pause] to landing on Mars, silicones have played an integral part in taking us to space, pushing the boundaries of innovation and our knowledge of the universe.
Derived from quartz extracted from the Earth's crust, silicones enable technologies that allow us to explore outer space [pause] and help us understand [pause] where we come from [pause] and where we are going. Silicones. A world of possibilities.

About our guest:
Sara Starling is a versatile and intuitive voice over artist with a whole clutch of awards under her feathers, and a voice that makes you feel as though all's well in the world.
Sara's been voicing for 3 decades, starting her career at the BBC as a radio studio manager in the days when razors & sticky tape were all the rage, before becoming a BBC continuity announcer, newsreader & presentation director, pressing a lot of buttons along the way.
Since 2006, she's been voicing for clients worldwide from her studio across all genres, for clients including Netflix, ITV, PepsiCo, Boots, Ocado, AstraZeneca, Sky Kids etc (that drama degree still comes in handy).
From commercials to corporates, promos to fiendishly complex medical narration and fun-filled animation, she voices it all. She hopes you never have to hear her instructing you on how to use a defibrillator though!
Her work? It's all about that magical human connection.

Script 2
MR TANWAR (out of breath and terrified)
Aaaaaargh! [a beat] I-I-I’ve just seen a monster. In Blackbury! (calmer but still panicked) I, I was… I was digging my way out of my house…when I spotted this… huge, white creature, sniffing around my dustbins!
He was at least six metres tall! With horrible, scary eyes!
(Mr Tanwar points towards the dustbins:)
That’s where I saw it. But it’s vanished…
It could bite your head off with its teeth… it’s six metres tall!
