Branding, bold moves and the art of getting rejected, with Liz Mosley

What if rejection wasn't something to dread, but something to actively collect? That's just one of the ideas that makes today's guest, Liz Mosley - graphic designer, brand specialist and host of the Building Your Brand podcast - such a refreshing voice for small business owners.   In today's episode, Liz walks us through a journey that began with a firm 'I will never work for myself,' that eventually flipped into a thriving design business she's been running full-time for the past six years. Her story is one of gradual, intuitive steps rather than grand plans - and there's a lot of comfort in that for anyone who feels like they should have it all mapped out by now.   I love what Liz is all about, and some of her philisophies really resonated with me - not least the idea that your branding is the business equivalent of putting on an outfit that genuinely feels like you - and how the confidence that follows can transform how you show up, sell and grow. But you particularly won't want to miss Liz's 'rejection challenge' - and how flipping the script on rejection from something shameful into something to pursue actually flooded her with 'yeses.' Three years on, and it has opened up SO many doors for her that likely would otherwise have remained unopened. Its been properly transformational for her, and it could be for you too. But that's enough frome me, enjoy the show!   Connect with Liz: https://www.lizmosley.net/ https://www.instagram.com/lizmmosley/ https://buildingyourbrand.net/   The Ted talk thst Liz refers to in our conversation: https://www.ted.com/talks/jia_jiang_what_i_learned_from_100_days_of_rejection   Today's sponsor: Today's episode is proudly sponsored by Jo Allen Coaching: joallencoaching.com Get 20% off the 'Back to Bright' programme by mentioning 'HDSDI' when you book    Connect with Jo:   HDSDI Free Stuff: https://howdoesshedoit.life/free-stuff/   HDSDI mailing list sign-up: https://howdoesshedoit.kartra.com/page/NewsletterSignUp   HDSDI Networking: https://howdoesshedoit.life/networking/    HDSDI Membership: https://howdoesshedoit.life/membership/ Email me to book a 1:1 Discovery call: jo@howdoesshedoit.life Follow me on Instagram to continue the conversation and get updates about the podcast:https://www.instagram.com/howdoesshedoitlife/

Marketing, sales confidence and sustainable growth, with Emma Hodges

Its episode 84 of the HDSDI podcast, and this week I chat with the brilliant Emma Hodges, founder of Biscuit Communications and a Digital Women award winner, about the real mechanics of marketing and sales for small business owners - and why so many of us are accidentally getting in our own way!   Starting off by covering Emma's wonderfully organic journey from corporate marketing into freelancing, we soon get into the nitty gritty of her super strength: marketing, covering everything from why it can take up to 28 touchpoints before someone buys from you, how to reframe sales as simply continuing a conversation rather than chasing, and where most sales actually die — in the silence after the initial exchange.   There's also a refreshingly honest conversation about 'accidental pipeline sabotage' - the way so many of us fixate on finding cold leads while overlooking the warm ones already in front of us - and Emma shares three concrete actions listeners can take straight away to address it.   So you might be wrestling with comparison-itis, dreading sales conversations, or simply wondering why your marketing doesn't seem to be converting. If so, this episode is the one for you, as Emma's practical approach will offer you a clear path forward.   Enjoy the show!   Connect with Emma: www.biscuitcommunications.co.uk Insta: @BiscuitComms   Connect with Jo:   HDSDI Free Stuff: https://howdoesshedoit.life/free-stuff/   HDSDI mailing list sign-up: https://howdoesshedoit.kartra.com/page/NewsletterSignUp   HDSDI Networking: https://howdoesshedoit.life/networking/    HDSDI Membership: https://howdoesshedoit.life/membership/ Email me to book a 1:1 Discovery call: jo@howdoesshedoit.life Follow me on Instagram to continue the conversation and get updates about the podcast:https://www.instagram.com/howdoesshedoitlife/

Finding your reset, with Beth Hammond

A gentle note before we begin: This episode contains discussion of serious health diagnoses and brain surgery. If you're affected by any of the topics discussed, please know that support is available, not least of all from the experts at theBrainTumourCharity.org   In today's episode, I chat with the remarkable Beth Hammond, confidence coach, speaker, and founder of 'Reset with Beth' — a coaching practice dedicated to helping high-capacity women reconnect with themselves and reclaim their next chapter. Beth explains how she discovered coaching back when it was still a largely unfamiliar concept in the UK, and how her business has evolved ever since, to become tailored for women who are ready to stop living on autopilot.   At the heart of Beth's method is the concept of self-trust — something she describes as a vastly underrated but essential foundation for real change. We explore the invisible load so many women carry, the deeply ingrained conditioning that keeps us putting everyone else first, and the simple question Beth poses to all of her clients: "If you had 24 hours completely to yourself, what would you do?" The answer, she says, tells you everything!   Beth also opens up about a period of extraordinary personal challenge — a brain tumour diagnosis, a craniotomy, a marriage breakdown, COVID, and navigating it all while raising two daughters with SEN needs. I found her account of how she chose to meet that time with grace, humour, and a fierce commitment to self-trust to be humbling and inspiring in equal measure.   This is a conversation full of warmth, honesty, and the kind of straight-talking wisdom that makes you want to sit up a little straighter; I know I did!   Enjoy the show!   Connect with Beth: ResetwithBeth.co.uk https://www.instagram.com/reset_with_beth/ https://www.youtube.com/@RESET_with_Beth   Today's sponsor: Today's episode is proudly sponsored by Biscuit Communications. Finding hope, healing and connection through art, with Nesha Mistry

A gentle note before we begin: This episode contains discussion of suicidal thoughts and mental health struggles. If you're affected by any of the topics discussed, please know that support is available. You can contact the Samaritans free, any time, on 116 123, or visit samaritans.org.   In this week's episode, I sit down with the truly remarkable Nesha Mistry — artist, emotional wellness mentor, and host of the Vulnerable Voices Podcast — for one of the most moving conversations this show has ever featured.   Nesha is particularly honest about her journey: from a career spanning law and HR, to navigating profound mental health struggles from as young as nine years old — feelings of isolation, a lost sense of identity, and a moment of crisis that brought her to her lowest point. What followed was nothing short of transformational. A guided meditation, an unopened set of her mum's acrylic paints, and the quiet calling to create — and in that moment, something shifted.   We explore how painting became Nesha's gateway back to herself, and how that experience has since evolved into a purposeful business built around creativity as a tool for healing. She shares the deeply meaningful work she now does through her art workshops — spaces designed with safety, vulnerability and individual expression at their heart.   If you've ever felt like you might have set creativity aside, or you're navigating your own healing journey and looking for a new way in, Nesha's story is a powerful reminder that art can be a bridge back to yourself — and to life.   Enjoy the show!   Connect with Nesha: @Nesha_CanvasCreations Podcast: VulnerableVoices_Podcasts   Today's sponsor: Today's episode is proudly sponsored by Biscuit Communications. Your story, your superpower, with Claire Winter

In this episode, I chat with the wonderfully insightful Claire Winter — a journalist turned entrepreneur, content strategist, podcast agency co-founder, and the creative force behind The Creatrix Journey.   Claire's story is one of remarkable reinvention, from her early days at ITN, to running a magazine from her 'shedquarters' with three children under five, to building not one but two businesses rooted in creativity and authentic storytelling!   During our conversation, Claire opens up about her experience of perimenopause and burnout, and how losing her words for a time led her to discover the transformative power of nature, movement, and reconnecting with her own creativity. We also dig into what it really means to stand out in an AI-saturated world. Claire's perspective here is both refreshing and galvanising: your stories, your voice, and your lived experience are your greatest differentiators.   There's so much practical gold here too, from how to overcome the dreaded "visibility hangover" that can follow putting yourself out there, to actionable first steps for anyone feeling reticent about sharing their voice; so keep your notebook to hand!   Enjoy the show!   Connect with Claire: winteraudio.co.uk (just mention this show to get 10% off the price of the 'starting a podcast' service!) creatrixjourney.com   Today's sponsor: Today's episode is proudly sponsored by Biscuit Communications. Clean ethics and good hair days, with Carla Saull

In today's episode, I chat with the wonderful Carla Saull, founder of Good Wash Day — a brand creating beautifully crafted, ethically made hair towels that have found their way into homes across no less than 49 countries worldwide.   In our conversation, Carla walks us through the extraordinary path led to her launching her own business at 51. I think you're going to love to hear how every seemingly unconnected chapter of her life quietly laid the foundation for everything that followed.   We delve into the story behind Good Wash Day itself; how a pandemic-inspired decision to stop straightening her hair led Carla to spot a gap in the market, and how she built her business from scratch with a non-negotiable commitment to UK manufacturing, organic fabrics and B Corp certification — even when those principles made the commercial road harder.   She relays her experience of appearing on Dragon's Den experience, how she blends work and personal life, navigating burnout, and the unexpected ways that having a purpose-driven business can support mental health and wellbeing.   So for anyone dreaming of starting something of your own, wondering if it's 'too late,' or looking for inspiration around building something extraordinary on your own terms, Carla's story is one that you need to hear!   Enjoy the show!   Connect with Carla: Insta, FB & Youtube: @GoodWashDay https://www.goodwashday.com     Today's sponsor: Today's episode is proudly sponsored by Biscuit Communications. Rediscovering yourself in motherhood, with Rebecca Hogan

In today's episode, I chat with the wonderful Rebecca Hogan, whole-self life coach and newly published author.   From corporate marketing to London ad agencies, through a deeply personal fertility journey, retraining as a reflexologist and ultimately discovering coaching during the space that COVID unexpectedly gifted her — Rebecca's story is as fascinating as it is inspiring, and a powerful reminder that every chapter of our lives, even the difficult ones, can become the foundation for something meaningful.   We explore the concept of 'matrescence' — the identity shift that comes with becoming a mother — and why society's expectation that we simply 'bounce back' can be such a quick route to burnout and mum guilt. In fact Rebecca makes a compelling case for why motherhood is actually a creative, expansive time; an opportunity to ask ourselves who we are now, and how we want our lives to feel.   There's real wisdom in Rebecca's distinction between surviving and thriving — between living on autopilot and genuinely checking in with what matters most. We also celebrate the publication of Rebecca's debut book, Me to We: How to Rediscover Yourself and Truly Thrive in Motherhood — a three-part guide covering the truths of modern motherhood, rediscovering who you are as an evolving person, and stepping into your future self.   So if you're in the thick of early motherhood, feeling overwhelmed by all the plates you're spinning, or simply craving a little more joy and intention in your days, you'll leave this conversation feeling genuinely uplifted, and with plenty to reflect on.   Enjoy the show!   Connect with Rebecca: Insta: @RebeccaHogan_ Website: https://rebeccahogan.co.uk/   Today's sponsor: Today's episode is proudly sponsored by Fearless Girls Club: Head to fearlessgirlsclub.co.uk and enter code HOW10 to get 10% off a 3-month subscription.   Connect with Jo:   HDSDI Free Stuff: https://howdoesshedoit.life/free-stuff/   HDSDI mailing list sign-up: https://howdoesshedoit.kartra.com/page/NewsletterSignUp   HDSDI Networking: https://howdoesshedoit.life/networking/    HDSDI Membership: https://howdoesshedoit.life/membership/ Email me to book a 1:1 Discovery call: jo@howdoesshedoit.life Follow me on Instagram to continue the conversation and get updates about the podcast:https://www.instagram.com/howdoesshedoitlife/

Finding joy in the everyday, with Cat Googe

In today's episode, I chat with the wonderful Cat Googe, a conscious joy coach, laughter yoga facilitator, and self-proclaimed "Joy Queen" who is on a mission to help people reclaim joy as a daily practice rather than a distant destination.   In our conversation, Cat shares how she transitioned from a teaching career that left her feeling energetically mismatched and burnt out, to discovering laughter yoga at a well-being day - a moment that would completely change the direction of her life.   We delve deeply into Cat's joy philosophy, and how it doesn't have to be reserved for big occasions like weddings – and exists just as much in the tiniest day to day moments too. She conveys how building our "joy muscle" through neuroplasticity can help us weather life's challenges, and why joy and sadness can absolutely coexist.   It was also fascinating to hear Cat's insight into intentional laughter and how our bodies don't know the difference between "real" and "pretend" laughter — we still release endorphins and lower cortisol either way. She also shares her bold journey into the festival circuit, which has now become a core part of her business strategy, bringing laughter yoga to thousands of people across the UK.   So if you're feeling stuck in a career that no longer serves you, or simply curious about how to pro-actively cultivate happiness, Cat's heart-led guidance offers a refreshing reminder that we can choose joy right here, right now.   Enjoy the show!   Connect with Cat: Website: https://catgooge.com  Instagram: @CatGoogeOfficial   Today's sponsor: Today's episode is proudly sponsored by Caroline Kulik of Eden Lane Interiors.    Check out her website https://edenlaneinteriors.com/ Caroline is offering a free 30-minute discovery call to HDSDI listeners, just head over to the website to book.
