Slow is Fine | Life in the Fast Lane #72

It's Life in the Fast Lane -- or is it the Slow Lane? -- because "slow is fine" after all, according to Vin Diesel. Anyway... We kick things off with the Tokyo Drift Minute, where we learn all about Paw Man and wonder why Sean isn't thrown out of the bath house in his towel. We then Run the VIN and get the first classic Vin post in more than two months, where we get a big update: "Several works in progress. Riddick. Kaulder with Sir Michael. Rock ‘em Sock ‘em… went personal on this one, but Mattel loves it. Theo, my homage to New York, the city that made me. The Arbor King. Some say Groot is Disney’s most valuable asset." You said it, Vin! 2 Fast 2 Furious is in the Criterion Closet! (Thanks, Jason.) But... is Vin Diesel? Joe offers helpful life advice to improve your bath routine and talks about his hunt for New England's best cinnamon roll. We talk about Backrooms, Widow's Bay, Margot's Got Money Troubles (no spoilers for any). Joey talks about the Radiohead Motion Picture House and Phoebe Bridgers' $1 concert. Stagecoach (1939)

We’re headed back to a very early “car” movie to talk about John Ford’s stagecoach with the help of Tobin Addington! After Joey bullies Joe into voting for the 2 Fast 2 Forever Hall of Fame (and you can, too!), we discuss the historical context of Stagecoach: it’s the movie that legitimized the Western genre and inspired filmmakers for decades to come, and also the movie that turned both John Wayne and John Ford into stars. Joe shares his ties to Geronimo. We talk about the closest scenes and vehicles we’ve gotten to a stagecoach in the franchise, discuss a Sorcerer-esque stunt (and how that opened up a whole new path of stunts in this movie, thanks to Yakima Canutt), and the origins of the term “riding shotgun.” We try to contextualize both the racism in the film and the atrocity of the Running W stunt. Tobin shares more insight into the ways in which this inspired Fast and Furious. Joey talks about the ties between this movie and Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie. “in my mind, you, Vin, were born in Cannes.” – Thierry Frémaux – Vin Diesel | Life in the Fast Lane #71

We’ve got a jam-packed Life in the Fast Lane today, including an all-time quote: “in my mind, you, Vin, were born in Cannes.” – Thierry Frémaux – Vin Diesel. First, we start with a Tokyo Drift Minute that could have been filled with so much detail! But, alas. Still, we find some good stuff, Joe gives us a Japanese history lesson, and Joey talks about Wim Wenders’ film Perfect Days. A reminder: voting is still open for the 2 Fast 2 Forever Hall of Fame, so vote now! Next: Vin is back on Instagram in a big way, but his captions are less prolific than usual. (That’s okay; you’ll see why soon.) We then catch up on all the news from the NBCU Upfronts and Cannes. Most importantly: the new Fast and Furious TV series (at least one! maybe four! probably not!) in what Vin Diesel is calling “The TV Space.” We talk about how we’ll cover the shows, guess what they’ll be about, and pitch our dream show. Vin gave a prolonged intro to screening of The Fast and the Furious film at Cannes? You don’t say! Meanwhile, Jordana Brewster requests more agency for her character (nice!) while making some conflicting comments about whether or not she watches these movies. Joey reads Vin Diesel’s essay in Variety, which is both genuinely good and genuinely Vin. Joe shares some good news about the new Tokyo Drift rollercoaster. A listener writes in with a new theory about whether Tokyo Drift takes place in 2006 or 2013, and our Patreon family grows in two ways. We talk (without spoilers!) about Obsession, I Love Boosters, and more movies in theaters. The Fate of the Furious (Lap 16)

Jordan Polan-Clarke returns to the show to talk about The Fate of the Furious… and the future of the franchise! After we acknowledge the vast shift in the F&F landscape since we last recorded – and remind you that voting is still open for the 2 Fast 2 Forever Hall of Fame – we turn our focus to the Fate of the Furious (and Jordan’s journey through the franchise). Is this the least Fast and Furious movie so far? How much do the women have to do in this movie? Is Dom Cuban? How much “engine work” does he really do? Does he make pasta and sauce from scratch? We discuss all these questions as Joe goes deep (but not too deep) into store-bought pasta. We also talk about what stands out in the Dom and Queenie scene, what Fast & Furious could have learned from Friends, and the homophobia in the film found almost exclusively in the Extended Cut. Then, we explore the differences in the Extended Cut, ask whether Hobbs and/or Shaw is gay, and talk about what Roman used to be good at. Is this the most classic car movie F&F? Is Dom’s villain turn believable, or is he reluctant on purpose? What will the Peacock F&F TV series be about? Plus: Jordan takes a BIG swing in the Fast Forever guessing game!
