Farmers are People: A Revolutionary Insight into Farmer Health with Lanie Doerr

What if we've been looking at farmer suicide risk from the wrong perspective? In this episode of The Impact Farming Show, host Tracy sits down with Lanie Doerr, a licensed professional counselor, to discuss her book Farmers are People: A Revolutionary Insight into Farmer Suicide Risk. Lanie challenges the widely held belief that farmers have fundamentally different psychological risk factors than the general population. She argues that while the business pressures of farming - extreme weather, high land prices, low grain prices and other financial challenges - can create tremendous stress, it is the resulting personal problems and psychological factors that need to be better understood when we talk about depression and suicide. Drawing on both her experience as a farmer and her professional background as a mental health therapist, Lanie offers a different way of thinking about farmer mental health—and, importantly, a message of hope for farmers, ranchers and their families.  In This Episode • Why Lanie believes farmers are people first when it comes to understanding mental health and suicide risk • What she believes the agriculture industry has gotten wrong about farmer suicide • The difference between business problems and personal problems • How financial, weather and farm business pressures can ultimately affect a person's mental health • Why farmers may be reluctant to talk about personal struggles • The psychological factors that can contribute to depression and suicide risk • Why the traditional conversation around farmer mental health may need to change • How family members and friends can recognize when someone may be struggling • The connection between the farmer mindset of independence and asking for help • Why Lanie believes this different perspective can open the door to more effective strategies for improving farmer health • A message of hope for farmers and farm families who may be struggling  For years, we've talked about farmer mental health through the lens of stressors unique to agriculture. But what if that focus is actually preventing us from seeing the bigger picture? Lanie Doerr's work challenges us to rethink how we understand farmer suicide risk and to look beyond the farm business itself to the person sitting behind the desk, driving the tractor or sitting at the kitchen table. Her perspective suggests that farming's business challenges can contribute to the same personal struggles that affect people across society—and that recognizing this could open the door to more effective ways of preventing depression and suicide.  This is an important conversation for every farmer, farm family and agricultural professional. Listen to the full episode, share it with someone in your farming community, and help start a different conversation about farmer mental health. Thanks for tuning in, Tracy ……………….. 10 Siblings, One Farm & The Succession Conversations That Matter | Farmstrong Series

What happens when a farm family has ten children and the future of the farm needs to be decided? In this episode of The Impact Farming Show, we go inside one family's real-life succession planning journey with Nathan, the eldest of ten siblings, and Derryn Shrosbree of Farmstrong. With multiple family members, different ideas about the future, and the difficult realities of land, money, inheritance and who will continue farming, succession planning can become complicated quickly. Nathan shares what the process was actually like for his family including the challenges, the assumptions they had going in, and the conversations that needed to happen. Derryn brings his perspective as the advisor who helped guide the family through the process, explaining why succession conversations can be so difficult, how families can work through competing ideas of what is "fair," and why having an independent third party involved can make such a difference. Most importantly, this episode explores what can happen when a family chooses to have these conversations before a crisis forces them to. In This Episode • Nathan's perspective as the eldest of ten siblings • How many family members are currently farming and who wants to farm in the future • What prompted the family to begin talking about succession • The biggest challenges the family faced during the process • Concerns about creating tension by discussing money, land and inheritance • How the family created space for everyone's voice to be heard • Why "fair" doesn't always mean "equal" when it comes to succession • Assumptions family members had about their parents' and siblings' wishes • The role Derryn and Farmstrong played in guiding the family • What could have happened if the family had continued putting succession planning off • How having a plan has changed the way the family talks about the future • Advice for farming families who keep saying, "We'll deal with succession someday." Don't Wait Until You Have To For many farm families, succession planning stays on the "someday" list because the conversations feel uncomfortable, complicated or overwhelming. But avoiding the conversation doesn't make the decisions go away. It simply leaves them for another day, often when circumstances are much more difficult. As Nathan's story demonstrates, getting the process started can bring clarity to things that family members may have been assuming, wondering about or avoiding for years. And having the right advisor at the table can help families have conversations they might struggle to have on their own. If your family hasn't started talking about succession, don't wait for a crisis to force the conversation. Start with one conversation, get the right people around the table, and begin building a plan for the future. What does the military teach us about resilience, and what can farmers learn from those lessons? Those experiences ultimately led him to develop his work around resiliency and write his e-book, Built in the Dirt: The Resiliency Playbook. In This Episode: - How John's experience in the Army has shaped the way he approaches farming, leadership and life - The similarities between the pressures faced by farmers and those experienced in the military - Why resilience is such an important skill for farmers and ranchers - The difference between being mentally tough and simply bottling things up - How to make better decisions and stay grounded when you're under pressure - The inspiration behind John's e-book, Built in the Dirt: The Resiliency Playbook - Practical strategies from the book that farmers can use to build greater resilience - The one lesson John hopes every farmer takes away from Built in the Dirt Don't Just Get Through the Hard Seasons. Build the Resilience to Grow Through Them. Farming will always come with uncertainty, pressure and things that are completely outside of our control. We can't eliminate adversity, but we can change how we respond to it.
