FootballTalk - Episode 234: Leeds almost there as Boro, Hull and Bradford prepare for play-off drama

On this week’s show, The YP’s Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Mark Singleton to applaud Leeds United following a campaign which has seen them all but confirm their Premier League status for the 2026-27 season. Last week’s 3-1 win at home to Burnley – combined with subsequent results elsewhere – left Daniel Farke’s team seven points clear of the drop zone with three games to play. Leeds could be mathematically safe by the time they come to play relegation rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Monday night. Elsewhere, Middlesbrough will look to overcome their disappointment at missing out on automatic promotion from the Championship on the final day of the regular season when they take on Southampton in the play-offs this weekend. Hull City will join them in the post-season, their 2-1 win at home to Norwich City last Saturday proving enough to see them leapfrog Wrexham and into the top six at the final ask. It leaves them with a testing two-leg semi-final against Millwall. Are we wishing for too much with an all-Yorkshire final at Wembley? Bradford City are also gunning for the national stadium, but first will have to overcome League One rivals Bolton Wanderers in their play-off semi-final in order to book a day out in the capital. With Sheffield Wednesday condemned to League One for most of the season, Rotherham United long relegated to League Two, Harrogate Town became the third Yorkshire team to suffer the drop – dropping out of the EFL after seven seasons. The team assess their chances of getting back up from the National League at the first time of asking. And, on the final day of the season, with their new owner David Storch in attendance, Sheffield Wednesday found the perfect moment to record only their second win of the season with a 2-1 victory at home to West Bromwich Albion. Things can only get better. Finally for this week, Leon picks out his Player of the Week, while Stuart nominates his Team of the Week.

FootballTalk - Episode 232: Leeds United close to safety, Barnsley's ongoing turmoil and York City's nail-biting end to the season

On this week’s podcast we start in the Premier League and the massive step towards safety that Leeds United took with a convincing 3-0 home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, while also looking forward – BEFORE news came out of Liam Rosenior’s sacking at Stamford Bridge – to their FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea at Wembley this Sunday.  There’s a review of the Yorkshire derby at Oakwell between Barnsley and Bradford City, as well as a discussion of the Tykes’ decision to part company with head coach Conor Hourihane at the end of the 2025-26 season and what it means for both the club and the former Reds’ captain going forward.  Then there are the remarkable events to pore over in the National League and the ongoing battle for automatic promotion between York City and Rochdale who have been locked in a battle at the top of the table all season – a contest that will be decided this weekend when the teams meet on the final day of the ‘regular’ season this weekend. And it has been a significant week for Hull City who, following their 2-2 draw at Leicester City on Tuesday night, dropped out of the play-off places for the first time this year, replaced by Wrexham following their win at Oxford United. Can they bounce back? Finally this week, Leon picks out his Player of the Week, while Stuart pores over the best Yorkshire Team of the Week.

FootballTalk - Episode 231: Leeds edge towards safety, Millers drop while Terriers still have hope

YP football writers Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join FootballTalk host Mark Singleton to cast an eye over the latest events in and around the Yorkshire football scene. They start off at Old Trafford where, on Monday night, Leeds United took a huge step to securing their Premier League status for a second season after beating Manchester United 2-1 – the win moving them six points clear of the bottom three with six games remaining. They then turn their attention to the Yorkshire derby between Barnsley and Rotherham United, which saw the Tykes claim all three points in their 3-1 victory and condemn their visitors to a seventh game without a win. The Millers then followed this result with a 3-0 defeat when they visited Wigan Athletic and in doing so, they sealed their relegation in the process. What next for both clubs? Another all-Yorkshire clash brought together Sheffield United and Hull City, the Blades coming away with all three points to leave the Tigers looking over their shoulders in the race to secure a play-off spot. Huddersfield Town who played out a 1-1 draw when they hosted Cardiff City and while they still have a chance to get into the League One play-offs, they need to start finding ways to close the gap sooner rather than later. Finally for this week, Stuart picks out his Yorkshire-based Player of the Week, while Leon selects the best Yorkshire Team of the Week.

FootballTalk - Episode 229: Assessing the run-in for Yorkshire's clubs from Leeds United through Bradford City to Harrogate Town

On this week’s show, host Mark Singleton is joined by The YP’s football writers, Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall, to assess where each of Premier League and EFL clubs lie ahead of the last few weeks of the 2025-26 season.  They start at Harrogate Town, Yorkshire’s sole League Two representative and who are almost starting into the abyss after a 2-0 defeat at home to Notts County combined with positive results elsewhere for their rivals left them bottom of the standings, four points from safety with just six games remaining. If the Sulphurites do survive York City will be hoping to join them back in the fourth tier, locked in a fierce battle with Rochdale for the one and only automatic promotion spot. The panel then take a look at the run-in from the Premier League down to League One, starting in the Premier League with Leeds United, who have eight games remaining to secure their top-flight status – currently sitting four points clear of the bottom three. In the Championship, there are four Yorkshire teams each fighting for their own different reasons with Middlesbrough hoping to claim automatic promotion, Hull City wanting to book their place in the play-offs, Sheffield United wanting to have a strong finish to the season and Sheffield Wednesday determined to show that they have some fight as they head into League 1. And, in League 1, there is plenty to keep us occupied with Bradford City still in the hunt for a play-off spot, with Huddersfield Town still hoping to join them in the post-season despite a recent drop off in form. Barnsley and Doncaster Rovers, meanwhile, simply want to head into the summer in a positive frame of mind following testing campaigns, while Rotherham United will be hoping Lee Clark can drag them to safety with just eight games left to overturn the nine-point gap that currently exists between themselves and the team immediately above the drop zone, Blackpool.

FootballTalk - Episode 227: Middlesbrough stumbling, Bradford City holding firm and Leeds United keep chipping away

On this week’s show, The YP’s football writing team of Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Mark Singleton and start at the Riverside with promotion-chasing Middlesbrough - currently gunning for automatic promotion from the Championship.  This week saw them fall to a 1-0 defeat against Charlton Athletic before behind held to a 1-1 draw by Bristol City, a result which leaves them in the top two ahead of this weekend but with a number of rivals breathing hard down their neck.  Bradford City had a similar week, a weekend loss followed by a 1-1 draw in midweek at home to Mansfield town – do the Bantams have what it takes to stay the course and be among the League One play-off contenders? Leeds United secured a vital point in a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace, but they remain just three points above the bottom three. Can they keep enough teams below them come the end of the season? Huddersfield Town remain in the play-off picture following a 2-2 draw with leaders Lincoln City and will be hoping they can collect enough points from their remaining games to secure a top-six finish.  And we assess what remains for Barnsley in their run-in and whether they have enough to make a late charge for the play-offs, or is it already too late? Finally this week, Leon picks out his Yorkshire Player of the Week while Stuart selects the White Rose’s Team of the week.
