#1 Reason You’re Losing Weight but Getting Weaker?! Rethink Fat Loss & Muscle Gain with Triple Board Certified Nutrition Expert & Bestselling Author, JJ Virgin

Be honest with me for a second. Have you ever looked in the mirror, stepped on the scale, and thought, “Well, I guess my metabolism is just broken now”? Most of us have. We hit our thirties or forties, the jeans fit a little different, the energy dips, and we chalk it up to getting older. What if that story is wrong? What if the real issue isn’t your age at all, but something you can actually change starting today? In this episode of The Happy Hustle Podcast, I sit down with the one and only JJ Virgin to talk about her new book, The Metabolism Fix, and why muscle might be the most underrated piece of your health puzzle. JJ is a triple board certified nutrition expert, a fitness hall of famer, and a four time New York Times bestselling author. She was one of the first personal trainers back in the eighties, she’s been on multiple reality shows including two years on Dr. Phil, and today she runs a mastermind helping clinicians become thriving health entrepreneurs. She’s also hilarious. You’ll have to listen to hear how she lost a pageant to a man in drag making martinis. Trust me, it’s worth it. What makes this episode matter is simple. So many high achievers are grinding hard in business while quietly neglecting the one thing that keeps them strong, sharp, and resilient for decades. JJ doesn’t sugarcoat it. She brings decades of experience, real research, and that no BS energy I love, and she connects it all back to how you show up as an entrepreneur. The first big lesson is that your metabolism probably isn’t slow, your muscle is shrinking. JJ pointed to research from Herman Pontzer showing that metabolism stays pretty steady between ages 20 and 60. The problem is that starting around 30, we lose roughly three to eight percent of our muscle mass each decade, and we lose strength twice as fast and power three times as fast. As JJ asked, are we losing muscle because we’re aging, or are we aging because we’re losing muscle? That one stuck with me. The second lesson is that feeling the burn doesn’t mean you’re building anything. Soreness, fatigue, and that fire in your muscles aren’t the goal. JJ explained that real muscle growth comes from progressive overload, pushing close to the point where your form starts to slow down and struggle, then stopping with a rep or two left in the tank. You don’t have to train to total failure. In fact, that can leave you so wiped out that your next workout suffers. She also busted the myth that lifting will make you bulky. Building a single pound of muscle can take about a month of hard training, and in 40 years she’s never once had someone complain about getting too strong. The third lesson is to go muscle first, scale second. We talked about GLP1s, and JJ had a refreshing take. She thinks they can be amazing tools when used correctly at the lowest effective dose. But she made it crystal clear that nobody should ever cut calories without resistance training and enough protein. Her approach is to move throughout the day, hit all your big muscle groups at least twice a week, eat enough protein and fiber, and let fat loss follow naturally. The scale only tells you what you weigh, not what that weight is made of. The fourth lesson is about the power of small, consistent effort. I shared how my buddy Ben Greenfield does pull ups every time he walks to the bathroom, and JJ brought the research to back it up. Just four and a half to ten minutes a day of short, vigorous bursts of activity was linked to a big drop in all cause mortality, something like 40 percent. Talk about a good return on investment. And here’s the part that hit home for me as an entrepreneur. JJ believes the way you do one thing is the way you do everything. When you push yourself in the gym on the days you don’t feel like it, that resilience shows up in your business too. The fifth lesson is to do the fundamentals before you hack anything. JJ has the sauna, the hyperbaric chamber, the peptides in the fridge, all of it. But she was adamant that none of it works well if you skip the basics. Before reaching for TRT or other hormone support, look at your sleep, your stress, your nutrition, and your training. Chronic stress is crushing testosterone at younger ages than ever. Fix the foundation first, then the extras become an amplifier instead of a bandage. We also dive into how AI is reshaping the health space, why JJ believes practitioners who don’t build a strong personal brand will get replaced, and her Trusted Authority Framework built on trust, authority, and proof. We talk about why she ditched her big annual event for smaller, more intimate gatherings of 60 to 70 people, why she doesn’t believe in work life balance, and her advice to strengthen your strengths and hire for everything else. Plus, she shares a money hack that’ll make you rethink ever paying retail again. What I love most about JJ is that after all these years and all this success, she’s still all about the simple stuff. Get moving. Pick your biggest constraint and start there. Take action. It’s not glamorous, but it works, and it’s the kind of wisdom that can change how you feel in your body for the rest of your life. If you’re ready to stop blaming your metabolism and start building the strength that carries you through business and life, this one’s for you. Tune in to the full episode at https://happyhustle.com/podcast and don’t forget to grab JJ’s free body composition assessment tool at https://www.metabolismfixbook.com/get-the-book. Your future self will thank you. What does Happy Hustlin' mean to you?For JJ, happy hustlin’ means enjoying the journey instead of waiting to be happy at the finish line. She admitted she spent years always chasing “there,” and every time she got close to the goalpost, she’d move it again. She was always going to be happy once she arrived. Now she’s realized that true success is having fun all along the way and enjoying the ride. The #1 Marriage and Money Mistake Entrepreneurs Don’t See Coming | Hike & Pod Exclusive with NYT Bestselling Author, Garrett Gunderson and Ageless Future Founder, Regan Archibald

Have you ever had a brutal week in business and just... not told your partner about it? You walk in the door, put on a smile, and say everything’s fine. You think you’re protecting them. You think that’s what a provider does. But here’s the thing. They can feel it. And what you call protection, they often feel as distance. In this episode of The Happy Hustle Podcast, I’m coming to you live from our Montana Mastermind Epic Couples Retreat, sitting in nature with a herd of elk somewhere behind us, alongside two of my favorite humans on the planet, Garrett Gunderson and Regan Archibald. This one is a little different. It’s raw, it’s a lot of laughs, and it’s real talk about marriage, money, and friendship as an entrepreneur. And honestly? I’ve only cried four times in the last forty minutes. If you want clean blood work, you go to Regan. Back in April, my labs were a mess. I’m a compliant guy, just tell me what to eat and when to go to bed, and Regan got me dialed in with the right supplements, peptides, and stem cells. Now I’m hiking, I’m thriving, I’m alive. Garrett is the money guy, the creator of the money persona framework that changed my life, and he’s currently crushing it on YouTube. He’s also the one you go to for the dirty jokes. Together these two are best friends who travel together, go to an epic concert as families every year, and somehow never coordinate their schedules. They’re proof that the right people make business and life a whole lot more fun. Why does this episode matter? Because being married to an entrepreneur is no small feat. I’ll be honest, I was nervous bringing the wives into the mastermind for the first time. But what happened over this retreat reminded me that the strongest businesses are often built on the strongest partnerships at home. Stop hiding your struggles from your spouse. Garrett shared something that hit me hard. Most breadwinners don’t tell their partner when they’re feeling frustrated or insecure about business or money. And the partner reads that silence as disconnection. So he made a decision to bring his wife into those conversations, because she’s powerful enough to handle it. Having insecurities doesn’t make you any less of a protector or provider. It just means you now have a confidant instead of carrying it alone. Entrepreneurship is only lonely if you’re embarrassed about your difficulties. We’ve all seen those posts about how lonely the entrepreneur journey is. These guys flat out disagree. One day Garrett called Regan and admitted he wasn’t feeling good. Regan spent an hour and a half with him on a Saturday helping him through it. That only happens when you open up. Vulnerability is what turns acquaintances into lifelong friends. Gas and guardrails, not gas and brakes. Garrett’s talk at the retreat focused on money for couples, and he dropped a gem. Often one partner is driven by feeling productive while the other is driven by feeling safe, and that creates a push and pull. When you understand where your money beliefs come from and what makes each other feel secure, you can stop fighting each other. One person is the gas. The other is the guardrails. You’re on the same road, heading the same direction. Share your losses so you don’t repeat them. Garrett is open with his clients about the money he’s lost on investments. Everyone loses money investing at some point. It’s part of the journey. The real question is whether you learn the lesson. Keep it quiet and you might just make the same mistake again. His openness makes it safe for his clients to be open too. Your environment shapes your conversations. When you’re around great people, the world feels a lot less scary. Garrett noticed that when he’s in a good place he’s playful and funny, and when he’s not, he’s stuck in his head. The people around you change the conversations you have, and those conversations change your life. Regan said the biggest breakthrough of the retreat was simply the community. Open hearted people, zero jerks, and one lovable exception who snuck through. This episode is a reminder that you don’t have to do this alone. Not in business, not in money, and definitely not in your marriage. Bring your spouse into the hard stuff. Call a friend when you’re struggling. Get yourself in rooms with people who lift you up. Life is just more fun when you’ve got good people in it. If you’re ready to build a business and a marriage that both feel like a win, tune in to the full episode at https://happyhustle.com/podcast. Grab your partner, hit play, and have the conversation you’ve been putting off. It might be the best thing you do all week. The E.N.G.I.N.E. Framework for Scaling Your Business in 2027 with Founder & Executive Coach of Leader’s Edge, HR Huntsman

Have you ever felt like the whole business rests on your shoulders? Every question lands on your desk. Every decision waits for you. You tell yourself that’s just what leaders do, so you keep grinding, keep answering, keep carrying it all. I’ve been there, and I know how heavy it gets. But what if being the answer person is the exact thing keeping you, and your company, stuck? In this episode of The Happy Hustle Podcast, I sit down with HR Huntsman, a leadership coach, speaker, author, serial entrepreneur, and the founder of Leader’s Edge. HR has spent about 35 years helping business owners and executive teams build healthier leaders, stronger cultures, and more resilient organizations. He started his first company at 28, a nonprofit that he grew over 22 years into a global organization with more than 200 staff across five countries. They built orphanages, drilled wells, planted gardens, and opened counseling centers. And he did it with no playbook. HR grew up in a tough, dysfunctional home where the main goal was surviving the day. It was his first mentor in the Air Force who told him to make his life useful, not just successful, and that one line changed everything. Today he’s passing on all that hard won wisdom to the next generation of leaders, and his upcoming book, Destination Workplaces, is all about creating companies that top talent never wants to leave. Oh, and he’s a total adrenaline junkie who jumps out of airplanes and just took his five year old grandson backpacking under the stars. No tent. My kind of guy. Here’s why this one matters. Only a small slice of businesses make it past five years. And on top of that, the Gallup research I’ve been digging into shows about two out of every three employees are disengaged at work. They show up, but they’re mentally gone. That’s a massive cost for founders, and it’s a culture problem we can actually fix. HR has seen under the hood of thousands of businesses, and he shares exactly what it takes to build something that lasts. The first big lesson is what HR calls the three things that helped him survive as an entrepreneur. Curiosity, tenacity, and proximity. Even at nearly 62, he’s as curious as he’s ever been about people, business, and his own potential. He’s also brutally honest that entrepreneurship will punch you in the gut more times than you can count, and the only way through is getting back up with a bloody nose and trying again. And maybe the smartest thing he ever did was surround himself with people smarter than him. He read every book he could find and straight up asked people to mentor him. Who you hang around matters. A lot. The second lesson hit me hard. HR used to believe leaders had to know all the answers. So even when he didn’t know, he acted like he did, and it burned him out. He eventually realized great leaders don’t have all the answers. They ask the best questions. He teaches CEOs to multiply themselves, because if you’re not intentionally empowering others, you’re the bottleneck. And he makes a key distinction here. Delegating a task isn’t the same as truly transferring authority so people can own decisions. That shift is what finally helped him scale. The third takeaway is his ENGINE framework, built from the systems thinking he got from his dad, who was a NASA engineer. HR believes every business runs on six systems, whether you’re a plumber or an attorney. Engineer your foundation by making your vision, mission, and values operational, not just words on a wall. Nurture your team with a clear ideal team player profile, smart hiring, and great onboarding. Generate a real, integrated business strategy. Ignite performance through true accountability. Nail down your processes so everything is documented. Then earn greater profits with clean systems around your numbers. Put it all together and you’ve got a playbook you can take anywhere. The fourth lesson is about accountability, and it’s where almost every CEO stops HR to ask for more. Most leaders default to carrots and sticks, bonuses on one side and write ups on the other. Both work for a little while, but neither lasts. Drawing on Self Determination Theory from the 1970s, HR created what he calls the MAP to success. Mastery, autonomy, and purpose. People want to get good at things, so how’s your training? People crave a voice, so how much autonomy are you giving them? And people want to be part of something bigger, so are you connecting their work to the mission and to their own dreams? Like HR says, your employees aren’t waking up excited about your vision statement. They’re thinking about their mortgage and their family. Link those things together and performance follows. The fifth takeaway is his idea of destination workplaces. I asked HR about investing in people who might eventually leave, and he didn’t hold back. Would you rather keep a poorly trained, frustrated employee forever, or develop a high performer who might move on someday? He compares great leaders to college coaches. You recruit top talent knowing you might only have them a few years, but you build a program so strong it keeps attracting champions. That’s exactly the kind of culture I want to build at The Happy Hustle, a place where people do their best work and then go on to chase big dreams of their own. We also get into money, and HR’s take is refreshing. For him, money is the outcome, not the driver. Get exceptional at your craft, treat people really well, and charge what you’re worth, which he admits took him years to learn after growing up being called trailer trash. We talk about the cold, hard truth that your bank account reflects the value you bring to the marketplace, and why HR finds that freeing. You chose your way here, so you can choose your way forward. Plus, he shares his rapid fire happy hustle hacks, from fasting 22 hours a day and working out on his trails to keep up with his grandsons, to 40 years of marriage built on daily couch time and date nights. This conversation reminded me that leadership isn’t about being the smartest person in the room. It’s about serving the people around you so well that they grow, thrive, and maybe even outgrow you. HR’s billboard message says it best. Pursue significance over success. If you’re ready to stop being the bottleneck and start building a business people actually want to be part of, this episode is for you. Go listen to the full conversation with HR Huntsman at https://happyhustle.com/podcast and start building your own destination workplace today. Harmony Equals Happiness: How to Achieve “Work-Life Balance” Using the S.O.U.L.M.A.P.P.I.N. System with Cary Jack

Have you ever hit a big goal, looked around, and wondered why it didn’t feel the way you thought it would? I know that feeling well. You can have an eight figure business and a two figure quality of life. I’ve seen it in people who make millions but have zero freedom, zero joy, and no idea when they last felt truly at peace. Honestly, for a while, that person was me. In this episode of The Happy Hustle Podcast, I talk about something I care deeply about, why harmony equals happiness. Back in my early tech days, I was grinding my face off like a dog. I sacrificed everything for money, status, and ego, and I burned out hard. That experience led me to write a book, start this podcast, and build The Happy Hustle around one mission, helping people systematically harmonize ambition and well being. This episode matters because so many of us are still running on that same broken playbook, and the cost is way higher than we think. Here’s the big shift. The answer isn’t to stop hustling. Creating value is part of being human, and I’m not here to tell you to quit your ambition. The answer is to hustle for what matters. The numbers are a real wake up call. An estimated 12 billion working days are lost every year to depression and anxiety, and roughly a trillion dollars in productivity goes with them. Gallup also found that 40% of workers globally felt significant stress the day before they were surveyed. We’re chasing more, more, more, but at what cost? The first lesson is that you might be measuring yourself against the wrong scorecard. Most entrepreneurs know their revenue, margins, and KPIs down to the decimal. But ask them how healthy their marriage is, when they last felt free, or when their kid’s next soccer game is, and things get quiet. I don’t compete on finances anymore. I compete on freedom. How much creative time and financial freedom do I actually have? That one question changed how I run my whole life. The second lesson is the S.O.U.L.M.A.P.P.I.N. system, which covers ten areas of life. There’s selfless service, optimized health, unplugging digitally, loving relationships, mindful spirituality, abundance financially, personal development, passionate hobbies, impactful work, and nature connection. You don’t have to be perfect in all ten. You just have to be intentional. And here’s one I see high performers miss constantly, passionate hobbies. Doing things you love without trying to monetize them. Guilt free fun is not a luxury, it’s part of the formula. The third lesson is to focus on one alignment at a time. Stop trying to work out while answering DMs while thinking about your next launch. When you train, train hard. When you call your mom, actually listen to your mom. When you unplug, unplug completely. Intensity and presence are the real secret sauce. I’ll also be honest, I think a lot of people are using AI as a disguise for productivity right now. It’s pulling them away from their zone of genius instead of serving their soul. The fourth lesson is the five step process that makes all of this practical. First, take the free assessment at happyhustle.com. Second, identify the areas where you’re lacking. Third, pick one or two SMART actions, small and consistent changes that beat any crash diet style overhaul. Fourth, calendarize it. Schedule your priorities, not just your obligations, and block time for family, fitness, faith, fun, and focus work. Fifth, reassess every week. I check my own score every Sunday, because like Tony Robbins says, progress equals happiness. The last lesson is the one I really want you to sit with. Show me your calendar and I’ll show you what you truly value. One day your kids will grow up. Your business will likely sell or reach its natural end. The money and the accolades won’t matter nearly as much as the life you actually lived and the people you loved along the way. So stop postponing your happiness until some imaginary finish line. Harmony is a practice, not a destination, and you get to choose it today. If you’re burnt out, running hot, or quietly wondering what all this hustle is really for, this one’s for you. Slow down, reflect, and start harmonizing your hustle. Listen to the full episode now at https://happyhustle.com/podcast and then share it with someone who needs to hear it. It just might be the reset you didn’t know you needed. "The BEING Over Doing Mindset" That Helps Entrepreneurs Win at Work and at Home with Founder of Entrepreneurs With Faith & Plant Your Flag Properties, Lucas Scharmer

Have you ever crushed it at work all day, walked through your front door, and realized you had nothing left for the people you love most? I’ve been there. More times than I’d like to admit. You win in business, you lose at home, and somehow you still call it success. That’s not happy hustlin’, my friend. And that’s exactly why this conversation hit me so hard. In this episode of The Happy Hustle Podcast, I sit down with my good buddy Lucas, a guy I’ve been friends with for over five years now, ever since softball brought us together. I’ve watched Lucas show up as a father, a husband, a man of God, and an entrepreneur, and honestly, he’s one of the most grounded humans I know. We got real about the difference between a “doing” culture and a “being” culture, how to stay present with your kids when your business never sleeps, and why learning to say no might be the most underrated skill an entrepreneur can have. Here’s a little about Lucas. He’s the founder of Entrepreneurs of Faith, an organization that hosts retreats in Montana for Christian business owners who are tired of carrying everything alone. He also runs Plant Your Flag, a raw land business he grows alongside his wife, buying land from distressed sellers and making it possible for everyday Americans to own a piece of this country with affordable monthly payments, the kind of deal most banks won’t touch. Before all that, Lucas wrestled in college, competed in MMA right alongside his wife (who’s a total badass, by the way), spent 27 months serving in the Peace Corps in Botswana, and ground it out in medical device sales. Today he’s raising four kids in Montana, homeschooling, keeping chickens and bees, and teaching his crew how to hunt, fish, and handle themselves in the wild. He’s lived a lot of lives, and he brings every one of them to the table. So why does this episode matter? Because so many of us are chasing the next goal so hard that we forget who we’re chasing it for. Lucas has felt that pain firsthand, and he found a better way. If you’ve ever felt hollow on the inside while looking successful on the outside, this one’s for you. The first big lesson is all about being versus doing. Lucas spent over two years in Botswana, a culture built around relationships and simply being present with people. Then he came home to America, where we’re constantly polishing our medals and measuring our worth by what we accomplish. A year into medical sales, grinding across the whole state and lone wolfing it, he found himself eating a PB&J in his Prius with tears running down his face. He told me his biggest mistake was trying to do it all himself. That moment of surrender, praying and finally inviting God into the struggle, changed everything. It led him to pivot toward land investing and building a business with his wife so he could live more aligned with who he really is. The second lesson is that presence with your family doesn’t happen by accident. It takes real intentionality. Lucas gets up before his kids so he can do his deep work, then pours into them the rest of the day. His bedtime routine is something I’m stealing. They read together, pray for each other, and share roses and thorns, the best part of the day and the hardest part. Then they add seeds, something they’re looking forward to tomorrow. His son even invented “prickers,” something he’s not looking forward to. I love that. And Lucas made a point that stuck with me. Your kids are watching what you do with your phone when they’re talking to you, and they’re going to copy it someday. The third lesson is one I needed to hear. Lucas used to believe great entrepreneurs were born with some magical ability nobody else could learn. Now he knows better. It’s all learnable. It comes down to consistency, discipline, and doing the right things over and over. Every night he writes down three things he’s grateful for and three things he needs to get done tomorrow. But here’s the key. Those three tasks have to be meter movers, not the easy stuff you knock out just to feel productive. Tackle the big rocks first and everything else gets clearer. The fourth lesson is about becoming what Lucas calls the CNO of no. When you’re the person who always gets things done, people keep asking you for more. Lucas once mapped out every commitment in his life as bubbles on a sheet of paper, then went full Marie Kondo on it. If it didn’t support his family or his core values, it had to go. So many of the things on our plates are there because somebody asked and we said yes, and three years later we’re still doing it. Be kind with your no, but be direct. The fifth lesson might be the deepest one. Lucas said it simply. “Contentment is the number one most valuable thing.” Comparison and social media fuel that endless craving for more, more money, more tasks, more everything. But as Lucas reminded me, if you’re chasing a destination, you’re chasing the wrong thing. The joy lives in the journey, in this moment, right here. We also talk about why Lucas and his wife can run a business together when a lot of couples can’t (spoiler, staying in your own lane is huge), how his Friday accountability group helped him push through the scary moments in his business, and why nobody on their deathbed ever wishes they’d answered more emails. Oh, and he shares a pretty wild fun fact from his college days that proves confidence really is ninety percent of the game. You’ll have to listen for that one. When I asked Lucas what happy hustlin’ means to him, he talked about stepping back and looking honestly at how you’re living day to day. It’s that beautiful union of having a great, fun, happy life while still hustling toward something that matters. That’s it right there. That’s the whole thing. If you’re ready to stop racing toward a finish line that keeps moving, and start being present with the people and moments that matter most, this episode is for you. Grab a coffee, put your phone on silent (after you hit play, of course), and listen to the full conversation at caryjack.com/podcastin https://happyhustle.com/podcast. Your family will thank you. What does Happy Hustlin' mean to you?Lucas said that happy hustlin' means taking a step back and looking at what you’re doing in the day to day of your life. It’s that beautiful union between having a great, awesome, fun, happy time and hustlin'. Red Flannels & Real Love: Top 5 Takeaways from 30 Power Couples at the Montana Mastermind Epic Couples Retreat with Cary Jack

Do you have a dream that still feels a little too big to say out loud? Seven years ago, mine was a room full of couples in red flannels, sitting in a U shape by the river with the Montana mountains behind them. This past weekend, that dream became real. Sixty people. Thirty couples. All high performing entrepreneurs, all in Big Sky for our very first Montana Mastermind couples retreat. And honestly? I’m still buzzing. In this episode of The Happy Hustle Podcast, I’m flying solo to share my top five takeaways from that weekend. We’d never done a couples mastermind before. This was the first one ever. People told me it was the most impactful weekend of their lives. One woman thanked me for giving her husband back to her. I don’t take credit for any of that. I know it’s God’s plan and divine alignment. But I learned a ton, and whether you want to host your own events or just want to level up your relationship and your business, I think you will too. Here’s the big shift. Most of us treat our marriage and our business like two separate worlds. We go to the conference, have the breakthrough, then come home and try to explain it to our partner. Something gets lost in translation every time. When you’re both in the room, you don’t have to translate anything. You just experience it together. And underneath all five takeaways is one simple truth. If you believe it, you can achieve it. It all starts with a vision, and you have to believe in it fiercely enough to go create it. Hold the vision and write it down. You’re 42% more likely to hit your goals if you write them down. That’s why we have everyone get their goals on paper before and during the mastermind. I wrote this event down years ago, got clear on what it would look like and who I’d need to make it happen. Then I watched it unfold in real life. Clarity comes first.Get aligned with your partner. Couples who stay together turn toward each other 86% of the time. Couples who aren’t on the same team often end up apart. One guy said something that stopped me in my tracks: he realized he didn’t actually dislike talking to people, he just didn’t like the people he’d been talking to. Profound in its simplicity. Our speakers Rich Christensen and his wife Gay talked about the value of having shared values, both what you stand for and what you reject. I saw aligned couples change in moments, not months.Fun is fundamental. Entrepreneurs just aren’t having enough fun. We ran a full tournament with cornhole, spike ball, horseshoes, ladder ball and more, complete with a bracket, awards and prizes. Everyone had a blast. Fun isn’t the reward. Fun fuels the hustle. So schedule it like a board meeting and treat it with the same importance. Book the adventure. Plan the date night. Get outside and play.Protect the room. We had world class speakers like Rory and AJ Vaden of Brand Builders Group, six time New York Times bestselling author Garrett Gunderson, and Joey Klein of the Inner Matrix System. A big reason people like that want to show up is that we curate the room hard. We have a no douchebag policy. No egos means real breakthroughs. So audit your circle. Find rooms where you’re the student, not the teacher, because who you surround yourself with is ultimately who you become.Prioritize intimacy and connection. Harvard’s 85 year study found that people with warm, close relationships live healthier, longer lives. Warm touch at least three times a week releases more oxytocin and lowers stress. Two of our speakers handed every guest a feather and gave us homework: slow down, one inch per second. Everyone laughed, but the point landed. Intimacy isn’t a reward or a bargaining chip. It’s part of the human experience and part of marriage. Phones down, eyes up. Touch, laugh, smile, connect. Presence is the greatest gift you can give your partner.Watching thirty couples crack open, laugh together and fall back in love with each other was one of the most meaningful things I’ve ever been part of. That’s what the Happy Hustle is all about. Building something great in business without sacrificing the people you love most along the way. Success means a lot less if you’re not sharing it with someone who’s truly in your corner. If you’re ready to get clear on your vision, get aligned with your partner and bring a little more fun and connection back into your life, listen to the full episode now at https://happyhustle.com/podcast. It just might be the reset you didn’t know you needed. Success vs. Significance: The Importance of Faith & Why Money Won’t Make You Happy with Battleworn Legacy Founder Trent McMurtrey

Ever walk through your own front door and realize you're not really there? Your body's home. Your phone's in your hand. Your mind's still out closing the next deal. I've been there, and I'd bet a lot of you have too. That's exactly why this conversation hit me so hard. In this episode of The Happy Hustle Podcast, I sit down with my friend Trent McMurtrey in his brand new studio right here in Bozeman, Montana. And trust me, it's a pretty badass studio, elk mounts, firearms, the whole deal. Trent is a husband, father, man of God, Marine and Army veteran, and cofounder of Battle Worn Foundation and Battle Worn Legacy. His story is wild. Right after he got married, he and his wife moved to Shanghai, where he worked as a dean of students and history teacher at an international school. That season sparked his first business, placing Chinese students into international high schools in the States, where they lived with Christian host families. He went on to build serious wealth. The homes, the boats, the toys, angel investing, day trading, all of it. Then he gave most of it up to start a ministry. Today, Battle Worn Foundation brings veterans, active duty service members, and first responders to Montana for a five day experience that's a hundred percent covered by donors, flights included. Battle Worn Legacy serves entrepreneurs and executives who want to build something great without losing themselves along the way. What makes this episode matter is how honest Trent gets. He was crushing it. He'd just come home from seven months overseas, money pouring in, and he was physically present but completely checked out with his wife and kids. Then came the divorce papers. He tried counselors, psychologists, and psychiatrists, and he says none of it worked until he surrendered his life to Christ. If you've ever tied your whole worth to your business, this one's going to land. The first lesson that stuck with me is that busy isn't a badge of honor. Trent shared a line he lives by: "If the enemy can't make you bad, he'll make you busy." He was a good guy who got so caught up in growing his empire that he lost sight of what mattered most. Now he's pulled the word busy out of his vocabulary completely. Instead, he says he has priorities. Simple shift. Big impact. The second lesson is about redefining success. For Trent, success isn't about the next dollar anymore. It's being the man God called him to be, then the husband his wife deserves, then the father his kids need. Work comes fourth or fifth. If his wife calls needing something, he drops work. Period. As someone who's walked the money chasing path myself, I loved hearing how clearly he's drawn those lines. The third lesson is that real growth lives in discomfort. Battle Worn Foundation is built around getting men uncomfortable on purpose, heading up into the Montana mountains together for devotionals and the kind of raw conversations that only seem to happen out in God's country. Trent talked about men who've done ten, twelve, fifteen deployments, special operators trained never to raise a white flag, learning what it means to surrender. Their very first cohort had fourteen military members and first responders, and two of them were baptized during the week. That gave me chills. The fourth lesson is that you can't fight your battles alone. Pride tells you that you can handle everything yourself. Trent teaches men to have four other guys in their corner who can pick them up when life hits hard. Entrepreneurship is lonely, my friends. Find your tribe and lean on it. We also get into a really open conversation about faith. I shared where I'm at, more spiritual than religious, believing in God and a higher power, and Trent shared why he believes in Jesus with every cell in his body. He even pointed me toward The Case for Christ, written by a former atheist journalist who set out to disprove Christianity and ended up becoming a believer. It's the kind of respectful, real dialogue I wish we saw more of. We also talk about money as a store of energy, why authenticity matters more than ever in the age of AI, and a rapid fire round where Trent shares his favorite movie, A River Runs Through It, and his marriage advice: treat your wife like a queen, put her before yourself, and learn how to communicate. Brother, I left this one feeling grateful. Grateful for friends who challenge me, for a community like Bozeman, and for men like Trent who show up with their faith on full display. If you're ready to stop wearing busy like a medal and start building a life where your family gets the best version of you, this episode is for you. Listen to the full episode now at https://happyhustle.com/podcast What does Happy Hustlin' mean to you?Trent said that happy hustlin' means getting after it and being happy in what you do. A lot of people are hustling and they're not happy. I've been there too. Your kids are watching, so find your purpose, because when you find your purpose through your vocation, that's where true happiness comes from. Hike & Pod! How to Build a Business You Love Without Burning Out with Founder of Slashdev.io, Michael Ballard

Have you ever been so deep in the day to day grind of building your business that you forgot why you started in the first place? It happens fast. You’re chasing goals, answering messages, working on the next project, and trying to grow. Before you know it, your business is getting more of you than your health, family, relationships, and the life you’re actually trying to create. In this special episode of The Happy Hustle Podcast, I’m coming to you straight from the Montana backcountry for our first ever Montana Mastermind hike and pod. No studio. No fancy setup. Just nature, good people, real conversations, and a chance to unplug from the noise. I sit down with my brother Michael Ballard, an entrepreneur and software development business owner originally from Sequim, Washington, who has spent the past eight years living in Stockholm, Sweden. Michael and his team work on mobile apps, websites, and AI implementations, helping bring technology driven ideas to life. But this conversation goes way beyond software and entrepreneurship. Michael shares why getting away from the computer and spending time in nature helps him zoom out and think about the bigger picture. When you’re constantly caught in the tactics of running a business, it’s easy to lose sight of what you actually want your life to look like. We talk about one of Michael’s biggest pieces of business advice, do what you love. His belief is simple. It’s incredibly difficult to become great at something you don’t actually enjoy doing. We also get into personal growth and what it means to continually work on becoming a better man. Michael talks about following a virtuous path, getting clear on what you want from life, and making sure your daily actions line up with your ambitions. When it comes to health, Michael keeps things practical. Exercise matters, but nutrition is where he believes many people miss the mark. He focuses on getting quality nutrition, prioritizing protein, managing calorie intake, and maintaining a healthy weight. Then we talk money. Michael shares how consistently saving and investing helped give him something he didn’t grow up with, financial security. Building a financial cushion gave him peace of mind knowing that even if his business stopped making money, he could still take care of his family. His advice is to start saving, understand what you’re investing in, and give your money time to work for you. We also dive into spirituality and connection. Michael uses yoga, movement, prayer, visualization, and time away from devices to reconnect with himself and something greater. Rather than only sitting still to meditate, he finds connection through movement and intentionally stepping away from screens. One of the biggest themes of this conversation is something every entrepreneur needs to hear. You don’t have to grind yourself into the ground to become successful. You don’t have to sacrifice your family or the people you love just to build a bigger business.Business and money can create a foundation. They can give you freedom and flexibility. But the point is to use that freedom to spend time with people you love, do things you genuinely enjoy, get outside, have epic adventures, and actually live. A few takeaways from this episode:Do work you genuinely love. It’s difficult to give your best to something you don’t care about.Build financial security one step at a time. Saving and investing consistently can create more freedom and peace of mind for you and your family.Take your health seriously. Nutrition, protein, movement, and maintaining a healthy weight can have a massive impact on how you show up.Get away from your devices. Time in nature can help you step out of the daily tactics and reconnect with the bigger picture.Don’t sacrifice your entire life for your business. Entrepreneurship should help create more freedom to enjoy your family, relationships, adventures, and the experiences that actually matter. As Michael puts it, “Living the dream.” We only get one life, Happy Hustlers. Build the business. Make the money. Take care of your health. But don’t forget to actually enjoy the ride. If you’re an entrepreneur who’s been stuck in grind mode, this conversation is your reminder to zoom out, unplug, and reconnect with what you’re really building all of this for. Listen to the full episode at https://happyhustle.com/podcast and keep Happy Hustlin’.
