Intellectual Freedom Podcast

David D. Hopkins, PhD

Intellectual freedom is not just a buzzword. It is a fundamental necessity for human civilization and your life's flourishing. It is the essence of the human spirit to question, explore, and seek answers to the most profound questions that confront us every day. Without intellectual freedom, we are but slaves to the whims of those in power, unable to challenge authority, push boundaries, or pursue truth. In our post-modern world, ignorance and oppression weigh heavy on all of us, stifling creativity, innovation, and progress. The quest for knowledge is not a luxury. It is a basic human need. Only through intellectual freedom can we unlock the full potential of our collective intellect and build a brighter future for all. This podcast explores topics in culture, philosophy, wisdom literature, and complex problems we all confront in life.

    # 172: GENESIS: The First Murder: The Violence We Never Outgrew | Part 3 of 7

Why do stories written thousands of years ago still possess the power to expose us? In Part 3 of this seven-part journey through the Book of Genesis, humanities professor Dr. David Hopkins explores the story of Cain and Abel—and the first murder recorded in the Bible. Cain and Abel both bring offerings before God, but only Abel receives the response Cain desperately wants. Disappointment becomes inadequacy. Inadequacy becomes envy. Envy hardens into resentment—and resentment eventually becomes blood. Before Abel’s body falls, Cain’s face falls. God sees the violence forming within him and issues a warning that still speaks directly to humanity: “Sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” This episode examines sacrifice, envy, resentment, personal responsibility, free will, self-mastery, body language, and the destructive stories human beings construct inside their minds. It also traces the violent pattern from Cain and Abel through warfare, genocide, terrorism, political hatred, and the frightening possibility of placing artificial intelligence and advanced technology into human hands that have never mastered the resentment crouching at the door. Technology can increase human intelligence, but it cannot heal the human heart. We have created cities, civilizations, machines, and artificial minds—yet we remain Cain. The first murder did not remain in that ancient field. Its blood continues to cry out from the ground, confronting every generation with one of the Bible’s most enduring questions: Am I my brother’s keeper? # 171: GENESIS: Sin, Shame, and Suffering Enter the World | Part 2 of 7

Why can you lie safely in bed at 3:00 in the morning while your body responds as though something is hunting you? In Part 2 of this seven-part journey through the Book of Genesis, humanities professor Dr. David Hopkins enters the Garden of Eden to explore Adam and Eve, the serpent, the forbidden fruit, and the moment sin, shame, and suffering entered the human story. The Fall begins before anyone touches the fruit. It begins with language: “Did God really say?” The serpent changes nothing physically within the garden—he changes how Adam and Eve perceive it. Abundance becomes deprivation. A protective boundary becomes oppression. God becomes an adversary, and disobedience begins to resemble liberation. Drawing connections between Genesis 2–3, modern psychology, human biology, anxiety, rumination, and Zach Bush’s concept of emotional abstraction, this episode examines our dangerous tendency to trust the stories in our minds more than the reality before us. It explores free will, original sin, temptation, responsibility, shame, blame, suffering, and humanity’s separation from God. The fruit is eaten in a moment, but that moment transforms everything. Humanity cannot un-bite the fruit or un-jump from the cliff. Yet even after Adam and Eve hide, God comes looking for them and asks a question that still confronts every one of us: “Where are you?” Send us Fan Mail Follow the Intellectual Freedom Podcast on Social Media:  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61581532813468 X : https://x.com/Int_Freedom_podLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/intellectual-freedom-podcast

    # 170: GENESIS: Before the Beginning of Time | Part 1 of 7

Before light, matter, space, and even before time itself, what was there? In Part 1 of this seven-part journey through the Book of Genesis, humanities professor Dr. David Hopkins ventures beyond human understanding to explore one of the most powerful sentences ever written: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” What does the Genesis creation story reveal about God, consciousness, language, human dignity, and the nature of existence? How does it relate to the Big Bang and modern science? Why does God create through speech, establish boundaries, and call creation good? What happens when humanity’s creative power—especially through artificial intelligence—advances faster than its wisdom? From Genesis 1 to the Logos of John’s Gospel, this episode examines the Bible’s astonishing claim: the God who created the world ultimately entered it. Whether you are a Christian, an atheist, an agnostic, or still searching, this episode invites you to encounter Genesis not as a children’s story or a scientific textbook, but as a profound exploration of what it means to be human. The story of humanity begins here...before the beginning of time. # 169: Stop Rehearsing Your Life. Start Living It. | Meditations, part 10

You know the person you want to become. What are you waiting for? In the final episode of our Marcus Aurelius series, Dr. David Hopkins explores Books 10–12 of Meditations and the urgent challenge at the heart of Stoic philosophy: turn what you believe into how you live. We spend years preparing, searching for the next breakthrough, and waiting for better circumstances. We rehearse a future version of ourselves while performing for the approval of people who barely know us. Marcus asks an uncomfortable question: Who are you when the audience disappears? This episode explores how to stop seeking validation, close the gap between knowledge and action, and practice integrity when nobody is watching. We examine why protecting your peace can become an excuse to withdraw from others, how to resist wrongdoing without surrendering to anger, and why confronting mortality can sharpen your sense of responsibility today. Along the way, we consider where Stoicism and Christianity differ on grace, human dignity, and death—and how both challenge a life built on endless excuses. Ten episodes. Twelve books. One final demand: become the person you keep saying you ought to be. Your next action is still yours. Your time is not unlimited. Stop rehearsing your life. Start living it.
