What if the things we throw away are exactly what we need to create something extraordinary? Meet Robin Davis, the artist, visual storyteller, and self-described "Playful Imperfectionist" behind Robin Davis Studio, where rusty bolts, discarded wood, forgotten treasures, and tiny handmade details become an enchanting miniature world. In this episode of The Motivatarian Exchange, Dionne Woods welcomes Robin for a conversation about miniature art, assemblage art, creative reuse, visual storytelling, sustainability, imagination, and the importance of giving ourselves permission to play. From her magical studio just outside Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Robin creates an extraordinary three-dimensional world centered around Pocket, a tiny, sentimental character she calls a Botling. Pocket was originally created for Robin's young son. Today, that little boy is grown up—and he's now her photographer. For Robin, Pocket represents something much bigger than miniature art. He's a reminder that forgotten objects, old memories, and even forgotten pieces of ourselves are worth rescuing. Rescue. Repair. Reclaim. Reimagine. Those words guide Robin's creative practice and her approach to the world around her. With 20 years of full-time studio experience, a background in graphic design, visual displays, gallery exhibitions, and art licensing, Robin has developed a remarkable ability to see possibilities in ordinary objects. A rusty bolt isn't necessarily garbage. A scrap of wood isn't automatically waste. An abandoned object might be exactly what Pocket needs in his miniature world. Robin has even been known to cross a parking lot to retrieve a rusty bolt glistening in the sunlight! But behind the whimsy is a serious question: What kind of world are we creating through the things we choose to buy, consume, discard, and save? Robin encourages us to reconsider our relationship with material possessions, waste, and the environment. Through found-object art, upcycling, and imaginative storytelling, she demonstrates how we can create meaningful work using materials that already exist. We also explore the role of curiosity and play in adult creativity. Why do we stop giving ourselves permission to experiment? What happens when we stop seeing the possibilities in everyday objects? And how might our lives change if we approached creativity with more imagination and less perfectionism? Robin shares her passion for collecting vintage and discarded objects, finding inspiration in nature, creating miniature environments, and telling stories through her beloved Botling characters. Her growing online community follows Pocket's adventures through Instagram videos, YouTube storytelling, and behind-the-scenes glimpses into her wonderfully organized creative chaos. In this conversation, we explore: Miniature art, assemblage sculpture, and found-object creativity The origin of Pocket and Robin's magical Botling world Building miniature environments from rescued materials Upcycling, repurposing, and sustainable art practices Why adults need permission to play Imagination, nostalgia, and visual storytelling The relationship between creativity and conscious consumption How everyday objects inspire three-dimensional art Robin's experience with gallery shows, graphic design, and art licensing Developing recognizable characters and an imaginative creative brand Growing an online community through Instagram and YouTube Working in a small, highly organized creative studio How nature, thrift stores, and antique shops inspire new ideas Creating stories and characters that encourage human connection The importance of making things with our hands Robin was also featured in the Summer 2026 Escape volume of The Turquoise Iris Journal, where readers were invited to discover her extraordinary miniature creations and the world she's built around Pocket. What's next for Robin and Pocket? They're working on new storytelling videos, including a special Christmas project, as Robin continues exploring ways to bring her miniature characters to life. If you love miniature worlds, mixed-media art, assemblage, vintage treasures, upcycling, sustainable creativity, or simply discovering artists who see the world differently, you'll love this conversation. Robin reminds us that creating a better world doesn't always require something new. Sometimes it begins by looking more closely at what we already have.
