I take a moment to remember Cronos and reflect on his enormous impact before revisiting Episode 133 from November 2023, where I took a deep dive into Welcome to Hell. An album that changed the rules, challenged everything that came before it, and helped lay the foundations for black metal, death metal and the extreme metal world that followed. This week on Heavy Metal Tones, I’m getting into a subject that can divide music fans faster than a dodgy guitar solo — re-recording, remixing and remastering classic albums and tracks in the pursuit of better sound. Can you really take a raw, dirty, low-fi classic and make it better without taking away what made it special in the first place? I take a deep dive into Cronos’ re-recordings of classic Venom tracks, looking at what happens when one of the architects of extreme metal goes back and revisits the music that helped define the genre. Then I turn the spotlight onto the audiophile pressing of the Sex Pistols’ Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols. Does improving the sound reveal more detail and power — or does some of the glorious roughness and attitude get lost along the way? This is a very personal look at original recordings versus reworked versions, the audiophile obsession, nostalgia, production choices and that eternal question: Should we really be fixing something that wasn’t broken?
