    Make Data Count - Advancing meaningful evaluation of open data

    Despite advances in open data, crucial questions remain about how data are being used and for what purposes. The Make Data Count initiative is driving progress on this front by building tools and community practices that help better measure, understand, and recognize the use and impact of data as an important research output.In this webinar, Make Data Count shared key updates from its ongoing projects, including insights from the Data Citation Corpus, a large, open collection of data citations, and the work with HELIOS Open to advance the implementation of data evaluation in institutional assessment processes.     AJOL's Journey in Strengthening African Scholarly Publishing

    This session provides an overview of the history of African Journals Online (AJOL), highlighting key milestones and lessons learned from supporting scholarly publishing across Africa. Participants are expected to gain insight into the Journal Publishing Practices and Standards (JPPS) framework and its role in strengthening quality assurance, transparency, and best practices in scholarly publishing. The session also showcases AJOL’s advocacy for Diamond Open Access to promote equitable and sustainable scholarly communication.     DataCite Insights: Strengthening Open Science and Research Visibility in Africa

    In this session, we explore how persistent identifiers and open research infrastructure are transforming research visibility and discoverability across Africa.Mohamad Mostafa (DataCite) opens with an overview of the 2021 UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science, particularly its second pillar on open research infrastructure and explains how tools like DOIs, ORCID IDs, and ROR IDs work together to make research outputs findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR). He walks through DataCite's global community of over 1,700 member organizations across 69 countries, its Fabrica platform for DOI registration, and the consortium model that makes adoption cost-effective for institutions across Eastern and Southern Africa through the UbuntuNet Alliance.Ahmed Siyad (CEO, SomaliREN) then shares the story behind SORER — the Somali Research and Education Repository — a centralized, multi-institutional platform built to address low research visibility, plagiarism concerns, and limited access to global scholarly infrastructure.     Identifiers and Inequality: Reassessing PIDs Through a Global Equity Lens

    Sergio Santamarina works as a librarian in Argentina at the National University José Clemente Paz (UNPAZ) and has a focus on open science practices and challenges in Latin America. Together with Jo, he explores issues around open access publishing requirements, the cost barriers for obtaining Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) in Latin American universities, and the importance of decentralized networks and persistent identifiers in research.     Exploring Open Access Models at a Scholarly Publisher - A conversation with Beth Bayley

    Beth Bayley is the Open Science Manager at Karger Publishers, a health sciences publisher based in Switzerland. She co-leads Karger’s Open Science Task Force as well as the Karger Ambassadors Program. Specializing in Open Access since 2010, Beth is engaged with strategy, policy, and communications to support Karger's “open for Open“ drive toward a sustainable transition to Open Access that will serve all stakeholders, from libraries to authors to research funders and the broader public. In this episode, Beth shares her journey into scholarly publishing and her role in promoting Open Science. She started with a background in journalism before joining Karger. Beth discusses how Karger embraced Open Access publishing early, launching its first Open Access journal in 2017. Over time, her role expanded to Open Science, which includes supporting researchers with best practices beyond Open Access, such as open data, FAIR data principles, and open peer review. Jo and Beth further highlight the importance of making research data more accessible while considering ethical concerns, especially in medical and clinical research. The conversation also touches on open methodology—ensuring that research methods, tools, and software are transparently shared to enhance reproducibility.
