Episode 130: Screens in the Early Years

Screens are a big part of children’s lives, but what does this mean for children in the early years? Are screens a helpful tool, a potential concern, or perhaps a bit of both? In this episode of the Twinkl Talks EYFS Podcast, Michelle is joined by Professor Sam Wass to explore the complex relationship between young children and screens. Together, they discuss how screen use can affect children’s development, learning, attention and wellbeing, as well as the role adults can play in helping children develop healthy relationships with technology. From understanding what children are actually doing when they’re using screens to considering when technology can support learning and when it might get in the way, this episode explores the evidence behind some of the biggest questions surrounding screen time in the early years. So, are screens a friend, a foe, or something in between? Tune in as we take a closer look at screens in the early years. Want to discover more from Professor Sam Wass? What does truly inclusive practice look like in the Early Years? In this episode of the Twinkl Talks EYFS Podcast, we’re joined by Desriee Asomuyide, founder of Little Omo, to explore representation, belonging and how we can create learning environments where every child feels seen and valued. Desriee shares the experiences that led her to recognise a gap in representation within children’s toys and learning resources, and why this inspired her work with Little Omo. Together, we explore what inclusive practice really means in the Early Years and why it’s so important for children to see themselves, their families and their communities reflected in the world around them. Episode 126: Play, Pressure & the Future of Early Years

In this episode of the Twinkl Talks EYFS Podcast, Michelle is joined by leading Early Years consultant and author Dr Alistair Bryce-Clegg for an honest and thought-provoking conversation about play, pressure and the future of Early Years. Together, they explore what young children need most from the adults supporting them, including care, empathy and a strong understanding of child development. They question whether the Good Level of Development continues to serve children effectively and consider what the right balance between play and direct teaching should look like in Reception. Alistair and Michelle also discuss the preparation of newly qualified teachers, the risks of relying too heavily on prescribed schemes and the importance of giving practitioners the knowledge and confidence to challenge expectations that may not reflect how young children learn. With Reception currently under increased scrutiny, they consider the pressure placed on teachers and support staff by national targets and how the sector can continue protecting child-centred, developmentally appropriate practice.   In this episode, we cover: What young children need most from the adults around themWhether the Good Level of Development still serves children effectivelyBalancing play and direct teaching in ReceptionPreparing newly qualified teachers for Early Years practiceLooking beyond prescribed teaching schemesThe pressures facing Reception teachers and support staffProtecting developmentally appropriate practice in the future  🎧 Listen now wherever you get your podcasts. https://www.twinkl.co.uk/campaign/reception-hub https://www.twinkl.co.uk/links/michelle-windridge?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=organic-social&utm_campaign=0726-uk-mwneluk 🎥 Prefer to watch? Episode 125: Starting Reception: Transition, RBA and Finding your Feet

As the new school year begins, there’s a lot happening behind the scenes to make sure children, families and staff feel ready for the weeks ahead.   In this episode of the Twinkl Talks EYFS Podcast, we explore the realities of going back to school and welcoming a new cohort into the Early Years. From INSET days and home visits to paperwork, outdoor provision and those all-important first connections with children and families, we discuss what preparing for September really looks like.   We also look at transition from the child’s perspective. How might children be feeling as they start or return to school? What can practitioners do to help them feel safe, settled and supported? And how can working closely with families, office teams and other colleagues make the process a little smoother?   The conversation also turns to the Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA), exploring its purpose and some of the practical challenges practitioners may face while children are still settling in. We discuss staffing, technology and logins, language barriers, supporting children with additional needs and what happens when children join later in the term.   Finally, we talk about something that can easily get pushed to the bottom of the September to-do list: staff wellbeing. We share ideas for looking after yourself and your team during one of the busiest times of the year and a reminder that you don’t have to have absolutely everything ready on day one.   In this episode, we cover: Preparing for the new school year and making the most of INSET daysSupporting children and families through transitionHome visits, admin, soft starts and building relationshipsSupporting children with additional needs during transitionUnderstanding and preparing for the Reception Baseline AssessmentCommon RBA challenges and considerationsLooking after staff wellbeing during a busy start to the yearWhy it’s okay not to feel 100% prepared  🎧 Listen or watch now wherever you get your podcasts. 🔗 https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLemcx8qcUKRyGh3_5KuwGVivWVhs8-S-o  🔗 Resources and support mentioned in this episode: https://www.twinkl.co.uk/l/159mww https://www.twinkl.co.uk/l/17ftnk https://www.twinkl.co.uk/l/1d7atp

Together, they explore the growing pressures faced by educators today, from increasing expectations and accountability to the emotional demands of supporting children and families in complex times. Lisa shares her insights into how these pressures are experienced differently across systems, yet often lead to the same outcome: educator burnout.
