I do both, so I was keen to hear Fergus and Johnny give me the low down. What I expected was a trite criticism of the CF methodology, but what I got was a well considered and fairly balanced set of viewpoints that I couldn’t help but agree with.
Yes, there is still a pre-eminence of the high intensity go-hard mentality, but more and more CrossFit coaches are understanding the energy systems at play and how the training can support other fitness goals. Whether it be knee op rehab or working up to Ironman, the quality of coaching and programming at each box varies, but at my local ‘box’ we have everyone from CF games-bound athletes to pensioners, all getting what they want from the varied training.
My goal next year is as hybrid as they come. 1000lb club and half an ironman. 4 CF sessions p/w complements my zone 2 and tempo work in swim/bike/run. I choose my CF sessions to focus on strength rather than ‘engine’ and I’m bloody loving it all.
Thank you both (and Dr Phil) for explaining how to get the most out of my hybrid training and how to avoid the pitfalls of CF + Hybrid. Excellent podcast.
And Fergus… walking on your hands isn’t that hard, and the journey from “can’t do that” to “can do that” is truly rewarding
