Ep. 114: What's Your Grief with Litsa Williams

Grief is a lifelong journey—but the kind of support we need can change along the way. In this episode of Discontinued, Now What?!, I sit down with Litsa Williams, MA, LCSW-C, co-founder of What’s Your Grief, for an honest and compassionate conversation about what grief really looks like—and why traditional therapy or support groups may not be the right fit for everyone. What’s Your Grief was created by co-founders Litsa Williams, MA, LCSW-C, and Eleanor Haley, M.S., to make grief education and support more practical, accessible, creative, and relatable. While both women are behind this incredible resource, my conversation in this episode is specifically with Litsa. We talk about intuitive and instrumental grieving styles, why grief is different from depression and trauma, and how an unexpected loss can completely disrupt the mental map we created for our future. Litsa also explains the importance of “grief humility”—recognizing that every person is the expert on their own loss. We also explore grief secrets, guilt, shame, stigma, professional grief support, burnout, creative expression, and the small ways nature can help us reconnect with hope, curiosity, and even moments of joy. If you’ve ever wondered why a grief tool helped you at one point but felt completely wrong at another—or if you’re supporting someone and don’t know what to say—this conversation is for you. Because grief doesn’t need to be fixed, rushed, or carried perfectly. Sometimes, we need the right support for where we are right now. ***** Guest Bio: Litsa Williams, MA, LCSW-C, is the co-founder of the online grief organization What’s Your Grief. She’s a grief therapist with twenty years of experience working with sudden, traumatic, and disenfranchised losses as well as ambiguous grief. Drawing on personal and professional experience with grief, WYG was built as a resource offering concrete, accessible, and relatable support, founded on the values of psychoeducation and creative coping. It has grown to serve more than 5 million visitors each year. Litsa received her master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from the University of Maryland School of Social Work, as well as a master’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Warwick (UK). She co-authored the 2022 book What’s Your Grief: Lists to Help You Through Any Loss and has been interviewed as a grief expert for the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, NPR, and New York Times. Because sometimes moving forward isn't about having the perfect answer. It's about giving yourself enough space to ask: Is this actually true—or is this a story I've been telling myself? We explore how fear can keep us inside what feels familiar, even when we know we're ready for something different. Listen as we share practical ways to interrupt that pattern, including: journalingchanging your physical environmentspending time in naturemoving your bodyexamining the evidence behind your thoughtsvisualizationembracing energy practices We also dive into manifestation, the Cancer New Moon, the spiritual practice of setting intentions, and one incredibly important reminder: Do not base your future on your past. Just because you haven't done something before doesn't mean you can't do it. Maybe the answer isn't I can't. Maybe it's simply: I haven't done it YET! This episode is for anyone navigating a life transition, feeling stuck, questioning their next chapter, working through self-doubt, or learning how to trust themselves again. 🎧 Listen now and ask yourself: What could change if you stopped using your past as proof of what's possible for your future? ********* Need help getting a hold of your thoughts?
