3_Oh Holly Night - With Metronome

Send us Fan Mail “O Holy Night” originated in Roquemaure, France, in 1847 through a collaboration between a non-religious poet, a Jewish composer, and a local parish priest. [1, 2] Origins in France (1847) The Poem: A local parish priest asked French wine merchant and poet Placide Cappeau to write a Christmas poem to celebrate the renovation of the church organ. Inspired by the Gospel of Luke, Cappeau wrote “Minuit, chrétiens” (Midnight, Christians). The Music: Cappeau asked his friend Adolphe Adam—a prominent French composer and opera writer who was Jewish—to compose the music. The Premiere: The song, titled “Cantique de Noël,” debuted at a midnight Christmas Eve mass in Roquemaure and was immediately embraced by the public. [1, 2, 3]The French Church Ban The Controversy: The Catholic Church eventually banned the carol after learning of Cappeau’s secular and socialist views (and his split from the church), Adam’s Jewish faith, and lyrics that perceived Jesus as a liberator or breaker of chains. The Secret Practice: Despite the official ban by church leadership, French citizens continued singing the song privately in their homes. [1, 2]American Translation and Abolitionist Anthem John Sullivan Dwight (1855): American Unitarian minister, music critic, and abolitionist John Sullivan Dwight discovered the song and translated it into English as “O Holy Night”.The Anti-Slavery Lyrics: Dwight adapted the third verse to include lines directly targeting slavery: "Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother; and in his name all oppression shall cease".Civil War Impact: The English version gained deep traction across the American North during the Civil War as an anthem of freedom and human dignity. [1, 2, 3, 4]First Song on Radio (1906) Reginald Fessenden: On Christmas Eve in 1906, Canadian inventor Reginald Fessenden used an alternator-transmitter to broadcast the first-ever audio and musical performance sent over radio waves. After reading a passage from the Gospel of Luke, he played “O Holy Night” on his violin to astonished ship wireless operators and radio listeners.
