130: "They'll Never Learn Without Consequences, Right?!"

A while back, I posted a reel of my son spilling soda on the couch and me NOT punishing him. It got over 1 million views, and the comments were INSANE. The question I heard most was “Don’t kids need consequences??” Yeees BUT they’re almost never what most of us think. And they do not have to hurt to "work" (in fact they really must NOT!). In this episode I break down discipline vs punishment, what the research really says, and the 5-question check that tells you whether your consequence is a real consequence or a punishment in a pretty outfit. You’ll also get 10 real examples for ages 2 to 16, plus the story of a mum I coached whose daily screen-time battles ended this exact approach. EVOLVE: Here's the course I mentioned: www.stephaniepinto.com/evolve and code: PODEP130 (Go now whilst it's $37 instead of $111!!) 🩷 Hi! 129: Raise Resilient Kids With Just 3 Messages

🎁 FREEBIE ALERT: Get your Emotionally Intelligent Parenting Cheat Sheet Bundle here: www.stephaniepinto.com/gifts When your child struggles, every instinct says to find the problem and fix it. But 99% of the time, that actually making things harder (sorry!) Most of the world around us, from the medical model to many therapy rooms, takes a deficit approach: what’s wrong, what are the risks, how do we fix it. The Resilience Donut is the opposite. It’s a strengths-based approach that flips the usual advice on its head. Instead of pouring your energy into your child’s weakest area, you find what’s already working and build on it. I unpack the 3 key messages every child needs to hear on the inside (they're much more simple than you think!) the 7 things around them that protect them when life gets hard, and why kids who think pessimistically can hold on to things that they brush off even your best encouragement. 128: The Sensory Code with Laura Petix (Occupational Therapist)

What if your child's most baffling behaviour isn't defiance or attitude at all? Consequences, reward charts, and bribes haven't stopped the meltdowns, refusals, or shutdowns. That's because it's not about discipline. It's about the sensory system (that no-one teaches us by the way!) I'm joined by occupational therapist Laura Petix, author of the new book The Sensory Code, and founder of Instagram's @theotbutterfly, to talk about a topic that doesn't get enough airtime. Laura shares how looking at behaviour from a different angle, kind of like coming in through a side window, can change everything about how you understand and respond to your child, whether they're a toddler or a teenager. You'll walk away with a fresh lens, quick practical strategies, and definitely a few lightbulb moments. Where to find Laura's book The Sensory Code: all good bookstores and online! Head to www.theotbutterfly.com or find her on Instagram. The book is OUT NOW! Go go go :) 🩷 Hi! 127: The Validation Trap: What the Research Actually Says

Ever caught yourself doing "all the right things" emotionally with your kid only to watch it somehow make things worse? In this episode, I'm breaking down something most parenting content won't tell you: the research on why constant emotional narration can backfire, and where the real line is between validating your child and accidentally teaching them to get stuck in a feeling instead of moving through it. Drawing on neuroscience and child development research most parents have never heard translated into plain English, this episode will change the way you respond the next time your kid falls apart (and might just explain why some of your go-to strategies haven't been working the way you thought they would!). If this way of thinking resonates, my book on Amazon goes deeper into these ideas — emotional intelligence as the foundation for calmer, more connected parenting. 126: Six Steps to De-Escalating Big Emotions (And the Meltdown at Taronga Zoo)

Imagine standing in the middle of a zoo (or a supermarket, or a school pickup line) watching your child completely fall apart and feeling completely frozen... This is what I'm talking about today! This episode right here is your turning point. I'm walking you through my six-step de-escalation framework that goes way beyond the usual "get down to their level" advice you've heard a hundred times — into the neuroscience of WHY your child literally cannot hear you mid-meltdown, the one thing most parents do first that makes it last twice as long, and the small but powerful move that hands your child back their sense of control in seconds. This isn't theory. It's the exact approach I use with my own kids, the one I teach in my coaching practice, and the one I wish had been used at the Taronga Zoo lion enclosure on ANZAC Day weekend... If you want to stop dreading the next big emotional moment and start feeling genuinely equipped for it, press play. 125: Tummy Aches, Tears, and Panic: Anxiety in Kids.

Anxiety Masterclass tickets here: www.stephaniepinto.com/anxious-masterclass Ever stood in the school car park while your child clings to you, pleading they can’t go in, and thought… is this ever going to get easier? Or your teen is shutting themselves away in their room, refusing to go to social gatherings or other activities (that you know they’d probably LOVE)? I’ve been there. My youngest has, too. And yes, even as someone who teaches emotional intelligence and anxiety strategies, I still questioned myself in those moments (a lot). Today I'm sharing our story, from tearful mornings to the small victories that actually matter. I also dive into a few things parents often don’t realise about anxiety: why tummies hurt, why constant reassurance can backfire, and the thinking patterns of anxious brains. Plus, a story moment from a Caribbean stage where I realised I’d finally made it past the worst of my own anxiety (spoiler: it felt amazing). This episode is honest, real, and practical. You’ll get hope, a few gentle strategies you can start using immediately, and a reminder that anxious kids don’t need fixing, they need understanding and the right tools. 124: What to Do When Your Child Is Overwhelmed: The ABCs of Co-Regulation

Ever had a moment where your child’s reaction felt way bigger than the situation? 🌋 A small thing turns into a huge meltdown. Logic doesn’t land. Consequences do NOT work. And you’re thinking "what am I supposed to do right now?" This is for you! Today I’m joined by Elizabeth Sautter, a speech-language pathologist and author who has spent nearly 30 years supporting neurodivergent kids, families and educators. She’s also a mum of two neurodivergent (grown up) kids, so everything she shares comes from both professional experience and real life. Elizabeth introduces a simple framework she uses with families called the ABCs and 123s of co-regulation. It helps parents understand what’s happening in a child’s nervous system when emotions run high, and what actually helps in the moment. Because when kids are overwhelmed, it’s often not a discipline problem. It’s a regulation problem. In this episode we talk about: ✅ Why behaviour is often a signal, not the real problem ✅ Why reasoning with a dysregulated child rarely works (we’ve all tried though) ✅ The power of pausing before responding ✅ How your calm nervous system helps regulate your child’s I also love Elizabeth's metaphor about kids learning to ride emotional waves. "Our job isn’t to stop the waves, but to help them stay afloat while the feelings pass." She created a free resource for listeners called the Get Regulation in Real Time Toolkit, with practical tools to support kids’ emotional regulation at home or school. Grab it here.
