    Well guys, its finally here. The end of Season 4. This season has pushed me more than any other To create quality content for you musicians, music educators, those recovering from injury or not. This podcast is a labor of love for anyone and everyone involved in music. Because we have a HUGE need in our world - to help performers achieve their goals in the healthiest way possible -to help musicians dealing with performance injuries or other health issues to get the resources they need (which is often times just a sense of community!)     Music is Movement! With Dr Bonnie Draina

    One new thing I learned this season is that body mapping is just as important for singers as it is for instrumentalists.  Also, it is so important to get a correct diagnosis when recovering from an injury! My guest this week has experience in both.  Dr Bonnie Draina is a renowned vocal pedagogue and performer. In addition to this, she is an expert in body mapping for vocalists, and literally studied the craft with Barbara Conable herself (who developed body mapping).  We talk about her experience with illness that led to a misdiagnosis of muscle tension dysphonia of the larynx.  Later on, after pursuing recovery from that malady, she received a correct diagnosis of singers dystonia.  We talk about how dystonia manifests itself for singers, how to develop correct vocal pedagogical jargon, and much more!     Strength Training for Musicians?? With Dr Amy Likar

    I had such a pleasant conversation with Dr Amy Likar today (well, I guess it was a few months ago when we recorded, but I enjoyed it all the same!) She has been in the musician wellness field for over 30 years, and has a WEALTH of knowledge when it comes to body mapping, technique, and connecting with your instrument. She also shares stories of how injuries and surgeries she experienced led her to develop compensatory playing patterns that led to performance difficulties on flute But then how those difficult experiences led her to find solutions through Alexander Technique, body mapping, and performance psychology. She also shares how she now formulates her exercise routines based on her body mapping and Alexander Technique knowledge, which I found to be particularly interesting! Enjoy, and keep on keepin' on!     Tips for dealing with Focal Dystonia in your Music Students

    This is the last Research and Development episode for Season 4! This study, entitled “Treating the musician rather than the symptom: The holistic tools employed by current practices to attend the non-motor problems of musicians with task-specific focal dystonia” by Anna Détári (2023) is a really well written piece on what musicians focal dystonia is. She interviewed several experts when it comes to focal dystonia, including neurologists, physiotherapists, and professional musicians who help other musicians rehab from FD. She found that there were three main themes as far as how to help musicians dealing with this issue. Watch to find out what they found!     I love highlighting the good things happening in the musician health world! One of those things is happening on the campus of the University of Colorado at Boulder's College of Music. A few weeks ago we met the embedded psychotherapist who is in the COM, Matthew Tomatz, LPC. This week, we meet the director of the musician wellness program: Dr Emily Gee. We talk about her personal experiences with injury as a cellist with thoracic outlet syndrome. We talk about the processes she takes her students through to give them a holistic education in building their wellness strategies. He shares his thoughts on the different types of injuries and how healing looks different for all of them How healing is RARELY linear. It is often cyclical!
