Ep 98 - What Parents Need to Know About Raising Kids in the AI Era with Sarah Dooley

What Parents Need to Know About Raising Kids in the AI Era AI is already woven into everyday family life, from streaming platforms and video games to school devices and social media. So how can parents help their children navigate it safely? In this episode, Hannah talks with Sarah Dooley, founder of AI Empowered Mom, about the do’s and don’ts of AI with children. Sarah shares why parents shouldn't wait to start talking about AI, how to explain that AI isn't a person or a friend, why AI literacy starts with parents themselves, and which emerging AI tools she considers off-limits for her own family. They also discuss AI companions and toys, privacy concerns, the importance of maintaining healthy "friction" in childhood, and why conversations about AI safety need to evolve alongside the technology. Don't wait to talk to your kids about AI. AI is already embedded in many of the technologies families use every day. Teach children that AI isn't human. It may communicate like a person, but it's a machine—not a friend or family member. AI conversations should be ongoing. Technology and its risks are changing too quickly for a one-time conversation about safety. Parents need AI literacy, too. Before teaching children about AI, parents should understand what these tools can and can't do. Don't blindly trust AI-generated information. Generative AI can be excellent at creating content, but factual information needs to be checked by a human. Be cautious about AI companions and toys. Sarah recommends maintaining a boundary between children and AI companionship until stronger safety assurances exist. Childhood needs some friction. Struggling with problems and navigating difficult situations are important parts of development, and AI can sometimes remove too much of that friction. Every family needs its own technology boundaries. Parents should consider their values and decide what types of AI use are appropriate for their family. Privacy matters. Sarah specifically raises concerns about AI-enabled glasses and other technologies that can potentially capture or expose information about people. Stay informed. Because the AI landscape changes rapidly, parents need to continually reassess the tools their children encounter. “Don't assume that this is going to go away or that it won't impact your family.” “This isn't a member of our family. This isn't our friend. This is a thinking machine that helps our family.” “When it comes to facts, you have to check them. You have to have a human in the loop.” “We try and keep a little bit of friction in our kids' lives and make parents' lives a little bit easier.” AI Empowered Mom— Sarah Dooley's work helping parents and caregivers use AI safely and responsibly to lighten the mental load. Common Sense Media — A resource Sarah recommends for researching technology, AI tools, and family technology decisions. Digital Mom — Another resource Sarah mentions using when evaluating technology for her family. Ep 97 - 6 Systems That Actually Reduce Your Mental Load

6 Home Systems That Actually Lighten Your Mental Load Back-to-school season brings a fresh wave of schedules, activities, paperwork, meals, laundry, and household logistics, which means it's the perfect time to put a few simple systems in place. In this episode of De-Stress the Nest, Hannah Morgan shares six practical home systems designed to reduce decision fatigue, clarify responsibilities, and make everyday family life feel more manageable. From meal planning and shared calendars to a 10-minute nightly reset and a system for handling your kids' artwork and school papers, these strategies can help your family spend less time figuring out what needs to happen and more time actually living your life. Key Takeaways: Meal planning reduces weekly decision fatigue. Plan dinners around your family's actual calendar, then use that plan to build your grocery list.Ownership is different from reminding. Clearly assign responsibility for household tasks rather than making one partner responsible for remembering and delegating everything.Use your calendar as a single source of truth. Color coding can make it easy to see who's responsible for getting kids where they need to go.Create a predictable rhythm for recurring chores. Doing laundry and dishes at the same time every day can eliminate last-minute scrambling.Focus your cleaning efforts where they matter most. A 10-minute reset of a few high-impact areas can make your entire home feel more manageable.Give school papers a designated home. A weekly review keeps paperwork from piling up while still giving kids the opportunity to show off work they're proud of.Bring kids into the systems. Chore charts and other visual systems can help children understand and take ownership of their responsibilities. Quotes: "Just remind me" is not actually transferring ownership. "When you and your partner can sit down and establish clear responsibilities, this is a game changer for sharing the mental load." "The point is that you're coming up with an intentional schedule." "Let's just spend 10 minutes a day clearing off the kitchen island...or whatever is highest-impact for you." Ep 95 - Caroline Dilbeck - Creating Equity at Home

Creating Equity at Home with Caroline Dilbeck What if creating more equity at home isn’t about getting your partner to “help” more—but about actually transferring ownership? In this episode of De-Stress the Nest, Hannah Morgan talks with Caroline Dilbeck, founder of Home Team Playbooks, about using clarity and household systems to make true ownership possible. Caroline explains why so many delegation problems are actually clarity problems and shares a practical example of how to take information out of your head so another person can confidently take responsibility. Key Takeaways Equity means transferring ownership not just delegating tasks.Clear expectations make it easier for another person to successfully own a responsibility.Define the outcome, timing, method, and contingency plan.Household knowledge shouldn’t live entirely in one person’s head.Focus on the outcome instead of expecting everything to be done exactly your way.Good systems empower spouses and children to work more independently.True handoff creates more margin and breathing room. Guest Quotes “You can create ownership through clarity.” “The task, feed the dog, is actually a whole sequence of many steps that usually only live in one person’s brain.” “You’re training someone to start to think independently.” “That’s what creates that capacity and that margin and that white space on your calendar and breathing room that we’re all searching for.” Resources Mentioned Home Team Playbooks — Founded by Caroline Dilbeck. Ep. 93 - Therapy is Self Care with Alex Rutkay

What if one of the best ways to take care of your family was taking care of yourself first? Therapy is often misunderstood as something reserved for moments of crisis, but in reality, it can be one of the healthiest forms of self-care. In this episode of De-Stress the Nest, Hannah Morgan sits down with entrepreneur, content creator, and City Mouse founder Alex Rutkay to discuss why therapy deserves a place in every working parent's toolkit. Together they explore how mental health support has evolved, why finding the right therapist matters, how therapy looks different in different seasons of life, and where AI may—and may not—fit into the future of mental wellness. Whether you're navigating anxiety, grief, burnout, or simply trying to become a healthier version of yourself, this conversation is a reminder that asking for help isn't weakness—it's wisdom. 💡 Key Takeaways Therapy is one of the most powerful forms of self-care—not just a tool for times of crisis.Seeking support during difficult seasons is a sign of strength, not weakness.Finding the right therapist can make all the difference in your mental health journey.Processing life's challenges is healthier than simply pushing through them.Conversations around mental health are becoming more open, helping to break long-standing stigma.AI can complement mental wellness practices, but it can't replace meaningful human connection.Investing in your own well-being allows you to show up more fully for your family and the people you love.💬 Quotes "The person I was when I started therapy versus the person I am now are two very different people.""Therapy is a beautiful thing—to know thyself.""If you're saying the same thing week after week, pay attention to it… and then grow from it.""When you need a new set of tools to get through a difficult season, therapy can provide that.""There's a real benefit to talking to another human being and getting to know yourself better that way."📚 Resources Mentioned City Mouse - A thoughtfully designed diaper bag brand founded by Alex Rutkay.Heron House Management - Virtual house management for busy families: we handle your to-dos so you can focus on what matters most. Self-care isn't about bubble baths—it's about making sure you have the capacity to care for yourself before burnout takes over.
