Extraordinary Purpose: Parenting Teens & Young Adults

Erin and Chris

Parenting a teen or young adult can leave you feeling overwhelmed, stressed, disconnected, and scared about your child’s future. Maybe they’re struggling with motivation, confidence, friendships, school, distractions, or direction. And somewhere in the process of worrying about who they’re becoming, you may have lost touch with who you are becoming too. The Extraordinary Purpose Podcast helps parents of teens and young adults become their best so they can confidently lead, support, and connect with their children and family. Hosted by Erin Verdis and Chris Adang, founders of Extraordinary Purpose, life coaches for teens, young adults, college students, and parents, and parents of four, each episode combines professional coaching experience with honest parent-to-parent conversations and practical strategies for real life. But this isn’t another podcast about fixing your child. We go below the surface. Behind struggles with motivation, confidence, school, relationships, technology, or direction, there’s often something deeper happening with identity, connection, purpose, habits, and the person your child is becoming. And we believe parents are still becoming too. That’s why we help you work on both sides of the relationship: becoming the parent and person you want to be while creating the environment for your child to become more of who they’re capable of being. You’ll learn how to: • Communicate with greater trust and connection • Help an unmotivated teen, college student, or young adult find confidence and direction • Build resilience, healthy habits, and essential life skills • Help your child discover their values, interests, identity, purpose, and direction • Navigate high school, college, relationships, technology, and early adulthood • Set healthy boundaries while strengthening your relationship • Become a calmer, more confident and intentional parent • Build a family culture rooted in growth, connection, and purpose Whether you’re raising a teenager, supporting a college student, or helping a young adult find their way, each episode gives you practical tools and a new perspective to help you become your best, strengthen your relationship, and lead your family forward. 🎧 New episodes every week. How to Set Boundaries With Teens & Young Adults Without Guilt or Constant Conflict

Setting boundaries with your teen or young adult can be hard. You want to give them independence, but you also want respect, responsibility, and connection. And sometimes, saying no or following through with expectations leaves you feeling guilty, frustrated, or caught in another argument. What if healthy boundaries could actually bring your family closer together? In this episode of Extraordinary Purpose: Parenting Teens & Young Adults, parent coaches Erin and Chris share how to set healthy boundaries, create meaningful family agreements, and follow through with confidence, without letting guilt or conflict take over. Through personal stories, honest conversations, and practical coaching strategies, you'll discover how boundaries can help you feel more empowered as a parent while helping your teen or young adult become more independent, responsible, and confident. In this episode, we explore: Setting boundaries without giving in to guilt How to stand grounded in your values, even when your kids push back. Creating family agreements: Setting clear expectations around responsibilities, finances, devices, family time, and independence. Reducing conflict and strengthening connection: How boundaries can improve communication, trust, and mutual respect. Following through with confidence: Staying calm and consistent without turning every disagreement into an argument. Letting go of control: Recognizing what's yours to own as a parent and what your teen or young adult needs to take responsibility for. Building a family culture you love: Using shared values, family rituals, and regular check-ins to create stronger relationships. Erin also shares a personal experience with her 19-year-old son that beautifully illustrates how expressing expectations with love and honesty can create an opportunity for growth and connection. One small step you can take this week: Think about one recurring frustration in your family. Get clear on why it matters to you, then invite your teen or young adult into a conversation about creating an agreement that feels fair, respectful, and meaningful. You don't have to get it perfect. How to Build Confidence & Resilience in Your Teen or Young Adult Daughter

How do you raise a daughter who is confident, resilient, and able to speak up for herself, especially when life gets uncomfortable? In this personal solo episode of the Extraordinary Purpose Podcast, Erin shares what happened when her teenage daughter began struggling with a difficult coach and Erin faced a question so many parents wrestle with: When do I step in, and when do I step back and let my daughter handle it herself? W hat began as a difficult parenting moment became an opportunity to help her daughter find her voice, advocate for herself, and discover that she could handle a hard conversation. Erin also shares a powerful experience from her own childhood that shaped her confidence for decades and reveals why some of the greatest gifts we can give our daughters aren't easier paths, but experiences that teach them: I can do hard things. In this episode, Erin explores how to: Raise a confident, resilient daughter Help your daughter speak up and advocate for herself Know when to step in and when to step back, model courage, confidence, and self-advocacy Help teens navigate difficult people and conversations Turn uncomfortable moments into opportunities for growth. When to Step In and When to Step Back With Your Teen or Young Adult

When should you step in and help your teen or young adult, and when should you step back and let them figure it out? Do you remind them again or let them forget? Push them or give them space? Help solve the problem or allow them to experience the consequences? These are some of the hardest questions we face as parents. As our kids become older teens and young adults, our role has to evolve. The goal isn’t to stop supporting them. It’s to learn how to support them in a way that strengthens confidence, independence, resilience, and ownership while protecting the relationship along the way. In this episode of the Extraordinary Purpose Podcast, Chris and Erin explore how parents can find the middle ground between doing too much and stepping away completely, and instead lead with presence, curiosity, trust, and intention. In This Episode When to step in and when to step back Why doing too much can make independence harder to develop How fear, anxiety, frustration, and expectations influence our parenting Questions that help teens and young adults think for themselves Why mistakes, struggle, and reflection are essential for growth How to evolve from managing your child’s life to becoming a trusted guide One Thing to Remember Before stepping in, pause and ask yourself: Do they really need my help right now, or do they need an opportunity to take more ownership? Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do as parents is create enough space for our kids to discover just how capable they really are. If You’re Struggling to Know How to Help At Extraordinary Purpose, we help teens and young adults build confidence, find direction, develop stronger habits, and take greater ownership of their lives. We also help parents navigate this changing relationship and discover how to support their child without carrying everything for them. Why Your Teen or Young Adult Appears to Have No Motivation, and What Parents Can Do

Your teen or young adult seems unmotivated. They procrastinate. Spend hours on their phone. Avoid responsibilities. Put off decisions about school, work, or their future. But what if lack of motivation isn't actually the problem? In this episode of the Extraordinary Purpose Podcast, Chris Adang and Erin Verdis explore what's often happening below the surface when teens and young adults seem lazy, stuck, distracted, or unmotivated. Fear. Overwhelm. Resistance. Negative self-talk. Uncertainty about who they are and where they're going. And here's the shift: motivation doesn't always come before action. Often, motivation grows after we take the first step. Chris and Erin explore how parents can help teens and young adults create the conditions they need to move forward, including healthier habits, supportive environments, fewer distractions, greater self-awareness, and a better understanding of what works for them. In this episode: Why lack of motivation is often a symptom of something deeper How fear, perfectionism, overwhelm, and uncertainty create resistance Why motivation often comes after action How phones, social media, relationships, and environments affect motivation Why sleep, movement, planning, and other healthy habits matter How knowing yourself builds confidence, direction, and momentum Why taking one small step can change everything How parents can replace pressure with curiosity, connection, and better questions   If you're worried about your teen or young adult's motivation, confidence, habits, direction, or future, this episode will help you look beyond what you're seeing on the surface and better understand what may be holding them back. Your child doesn't need to feel motivated all the time. They need to learn how to understand themselves, navigate resistance, and keep moving forward even when motivation isn't there. Is your teen or young adult unmotivated, unsure of what they want, or struggling to find direction? As parents, it’s easy to worry about college, careers, jobs, and whether our kids are going to figure out their future. But purpose doesn’t start with knowing exactly what you want to do. You’ll learn: Why a lack of direction can look like a lack of motivation Why identity and values come before purpose How curiosity, interests, and new experiences create clarity Why going deeper into what resonates matters How small steps build confidence and direction How to help your teen or young adult explore their future Your child doesn’t need to have their entire life figured out. They need opportunities to discover who they are, explore what matters to them, follow their curiosities, and take small steps forward. Because our job isn’t to give our kids their direction.
