Our son Jack is neurodiverse, and through him we’ve learned to see the world in a completely different way. Parenting Jack is a journey filled with incredible highs, but it also brings challenges that many people don’t see.
Simple everyday things—like going shopping, school transitions, or joining social activities—can sometimes feel overwhelming for him. Sensory overload, changes to routines, or social expectations can make what looks like “ordinary” moments feel huge. And as parents, that means we’ve had to learn patience, flexibility, and a whole new way of supporting him.
But here’s the beautiful side: Jack’s perspective on life is unique, creative, and often eye-opening. He notices details most of us miss, and his way of thinking constantly reminds us that different doesn’t mean less—it means valuable in its own right.
I share this because awareness matters. The more people understand neurodiversity, the more compassion and inclusion we can create—not just for Jack, but for every child and adult who experiences the world differently.
If you’re parenting a neurodiverse child, or you’d like to understand more, I can’t recommend the podcast We’re Not Your Typical enough. It’s honest, insightful, and a brilliant reminder that while our journeys may look different, none of us are alone.
Together, by listening and learning, we can build a world where children like Jack are celebrated exactly as they are.
