Can I, Can You? Resilience and Resetting Your Life with Mikael Avatar Stjernvall

This was one of the most powerful episodes of Blissful Connections yet, and I’m so excited to share it with you. Mikael Avatar Stjernvall joined me live from Thailand. He was born without a breath, and doctors believed he went about 40 to 45 minutes before a nurse found him breathing. He lives with cerebral palsy, set five long jump world records, and set a record at the 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta after roughly 15,000 hours of training. He has been a coach for more than 47 years and a motivational speaker for more than 35. In 1998 he was invited to a royal dinner in Sweden, where he spoke with the King and Queen. In this conversation, Mikael and I talk about what resilience really looks like, why he turned his so-called limitations into strengths, and the question at the heart of his work: “Can I? Can you?” We also get into the full-presence mindset that helped him break a world record through thunder, rain, and delays, why passion is the real test of whether you’re on the right path, and how moving to Thailand in 2009 changed his health, his sense of family, and his inner peace. You’ll also hear Mikael’s practical tools for everyday change: choosing your perspective, noticing your automatic habits before trying to change them, and improving by just 1% a day. His story about slowly earning the trust of a wild cat with a few focused moments each day is one you won’t forget. He also shares his upcoming cerebral palsy dance and art project, and my family joined in during the live audience conversation. We closed with a message I’ll carry with me: never give up. Breaking Free from Shame: Building Healthier Relationships with Dr. Tina Schermer Sellers

__ What if the shame we've carried since childhood is holding us back from healthier relationships, deeper intimacy, and greater self-acceptance? In Episode 62 of Blissful Connections, I'm joined by licensed marriage and family therapist, certified sex therapist, author, and researcher Dr. Tina Schermer Sellers for an unforgettable conversation about overcoming shame and building healthier relationships. After connecting in 2025, we finally made this long-awaited interview happen! Our conversation went far beyond the original outline as we explored how shame develops, how it affects our relationships, and how we can begin healing. In this episode, we discuss: Understanding sexual shame and the difference between shame and guilt. Puberty, body image, sexual development, and self-worth. How cultural and religious messages influence our relationships. Healthy communication, intimacy, consent, and personal boundaries. Parenting without shame and raising confident, emotionally healthy children. Dr. Tina's four-part healing framework: Frame, Name, Claim, Aim. Learning from our past while moving forward with compassion and accountability. I also share personal reflections about growing up, navigating adolescence, and learning to understand relationships and self-worth. My biggest takeaway? Our past experiences don't have to define our future. We can continue growing, taking responsibility for our choices, and building healthier connections without carrying unnecessary shame. Meet Dr. Tina Schermer Sellers Dr. Tina is a licensed marriage and family therapist, certified sex therapist and supervisor, educator, researcher, and author. Healing the Wounds Behind High Achievement (with Dr. Ron Stotts)

Healing the Wounds Behind High Achievement (with Dr. Ron Stotts) What happens when you achieve success on the outside, but something on the inside still feels unresolved? In this episode of Blissful Connections, I sit down with Dr. Ron Stotts for a prerecorded conversation about personal transformation, healing, mindfulness, leadership, and what it means to move beyond achievement toward genuine fulfillment. Ron shares parts of his own journey, including how difficult experiences earlier in his life eventually led him toward deeper self-awareness, healing, and ultimately helping others. We talk about why simply recognizing our patterns isn't always enough to change them and how old ways of protecting ourselves can continue influencing our relationships, decisions, and leadership long after they stop serving us. One of the ideas that stood out to me during our conversation was the difference between success and fulfillment. We can spend so much of our lives focused on accomplishing the next goal, reaching the next milestone, or gaining approval from other people. Ron challenges us to go deeper and consider not only what we want to accomplish, but who we want to become. We also explore vulnerability and authenticity. What parts of ourselves are we afraid for other people to see? What happens when conflict becomes an opportunity to look inward instead of immediately reacting outward? And how might greater self-acceptance change the way we connect with the people around us? From Pressure to Presence A major part of our conversation centers on mindfulness, breathing, and learning to become more present. Ron explains how intentional breathing and mindfulness practices can help us slow down and create space between what happens to us and how we respond. We discuss the difference between operating constantly from pressure and learning to approach situations with greater presence and awareness. That connected with my own experiences of intentionally unplugging. I share how stepping away from my phone during my recent three-day Christian retreat gave me room to reflect, reconnect, and simply be present instead of constantly moving on to whatever came next. Sometimes growth doesn't require doing more. Sometimes it begins by becoming still enough to notice what's already happening inside us. Leadership Starts Within We also take the conversation into leadership and coaching. Ron shares his approach to helping people move beyond simply solving immediate problems toward deeper personal transformation. We discuss mindfulness, emotional awareness, self-acceptance, developing healthier patterns, and his perspective on how our inner lives influence the way we lead and relate to others. Ron also shares ideas from his books and decades of coaching work and talks about his continuing work around transformational coaching. Whether you consider yourself a leader, entrepreneur, coach, parent, friend, or simply somebody trying to grow, there is something in this conversation to think about. And one of the simplest takeaways may also be one of the most important: Breathe. Be present. Take care of yourself. And don't forget to ask who you want to become. A huge thank-you to Dr. Ron Stotts for taking the time to prerecord this conversation with me and for sharing his experiences and perspective with the Blissful Connections community. Helping Families Stay Connected When Life Shifts (with Kristina Heagh-Avritt)

Hey friends! This week on Blissful Connections, I sat down with Kristina Heagh-Avritt, coach, speaker, and co-founder of Vibrant Family Education. Kristina has spent over 30 years in teaching, mentoring, and family development, and she brought so much wisdom to our conversation about helping kids feel safe and strong when life throws them a curveball. We talked about the Vibrant Family Education approach, which focuses on heart, mind, and spirit, and how the shift many families made during COVID opened the door to more flexible ways of learning. Kristina cleared up some common myths about homeschooling, especially around socialization, and shared how it can be a beautiful, customized option for kids with special needs. Some of my favorite moments from our talk: Why open, age-appropriate honesty with your kids prevents anxiety and misplaced blame How routines give children a mental "off switch" during uncertain times Why apologizing to your kids when you lose your patience actually builds trust How to ask teens better questions so they'll actually open up Why college isn't the only path, and how to support a child's own direction We were also joined by Chad Hamilton, who shared how prayer keeps his family grounded, and he may be bringing his own kids on a future episode. I loved that. Kristina also has a free guide with three strategies to help kids through hard times, and hosts her own podcast, Bringing Education Home, where she and her co-host bring on experts in parenting, nutrition, and brain science. My Fourth Day Has Begun: Reflections From Walk to Emmaus #128

What a night. I had just returned from Houston North Walk to Emmaus #128, September 17–20, 2026, and instead of simply telling the story myself, this episode became something much bigger: a live Fourth Day conversation with several of the brothers who experienced the weekend alongside me, along with family, friends and members of the Blissful Connections community. Even a few technical difficulties with our live radio stream at the beginning couldn't stop the conversation. Once we got rolling, we went for more than two hours! From Three Days to a Fourth Day The Walk itself lasted three days, but one of the biggest lessons I brought home is that the Fourth Day is every day that follows. Throughout the evening, we reflected on the fifteen talks and themes we encountered during the Walk, including Priority, Prevenient Grace, the Priesthood of All Believers, Justifying Grace, Life of Piety, Growing Through Study, Means of Grace, Christian Action, Obstacles to Grace, Discipleship, Changing Our World, Sanctifying Grace, the Body of Christ, Perseverance and finally the Fourth Day. I also wanted to protect the surprises of the Walk. This wasn't intended to reveal everything that happens during an Emmaus weekend. Instead, we talked about what those experiences meant to us once we came home. Priority: Sometimes We Need an Off Switch One of my biggest lessons began with a simple question: What are my priorities—and does the way I actually live reflect them? During the Walk, I disconnected from ordinary life. Email stopped. Text messages stopped. Work stopped. My phone was primarily an accessibility tool. And the world kept turning! That experience reminded me that rest and intentional disconnection aren't wasted time. Sometimes I need an off switch so I can make room for God, relationships, reflection and the things I claim matter most. Grace Before, During and After Grace became one of the threads running through our entire conversation. We talked about Prevenient Grace—the grace that goes before us, sometimes visible only when we look backward. We discussed Justifying Grace, forgiveness and the freedom of recognizing that I don't have to spend the rest of my life prosecuting myself for mistakes I've already confronted. And we explored Sanctifying Grace as continuing transformation. Growth doesn't require instant perfection. I'm still becoming. Several of my brothers shared their own experiences of recognizing God's grace through circumstances, relationships and timing that they understood differently only in hindsight. Ministry Doesn't Require a Pulpit The Priesthood of All Believers was another lesson that landed deeply for me. I've never felt called to become a pastor, and Emmaus didn't suddenly change that. But ministry isn't limited to clergy. My microphone can be ministry. Helping another blind person learn technology can be ministry. Accessibility advocacy can be ministry. Listening to somebody who's struggling can be ministry. Creating Blissful Connections can be ministry. That flowed naturally into our discussion of Christian Action. Service doesn't always mean doing something enormous. Sometimes it's rebuilding after a disaster. Sometimes it's providing transportation, teaching somebody VoiceOver on an iPhone, praying for somebody or simply showing up. The question becomes: What gifts do I already have, and how can I use them to serve somebody else? Piety, Study and Discipleship We also talked about maintaining a relationship with God through prayer, Scripture, worship, Communion, reflection and community. For me, studying Scripture doesn't necessarily mean sitting down and visually reading enormous sections of the Bible. As a blind person—and simply as someone who learns differently—I can use audio Bibles, Bible apps, discussions, sermons and other accessible resources. The goal isn't simply accumulating information. It's transformation. Our conversation ultimately brought piety, study and action together under discipleship: heart, mind, hands and feet working together as part of an ongoing relationship with Christ. Forgiveness, Emotional Growth and Letting Go I also shared some deeply personal reflections about difficult seasons of my own life. I've experienced anger, hurt, conflict and times when I pulled away from God. I've spent the last several years learning more about emotional regulation, boundaries, forgiveness and myself. Emmaus didn't erase that work. It gave me another way of understanding it. I can acknowledge where others hurt me without assuming responsibility for everything that happened. I can also acknowledge what was mine, seek forgiveness, learn from it and release it. That applies to my hopes for the future too. I still desire love, marriage, intimacy and family. I can pray about those desires and prepare myself for them without allowing them to become things I desperately try to control. Brotherhood, Community and Agape One of the most meaningful parts of this episode was that I wasn't reflecting alone. My fellow Walk #128 brothers joined me and brought their own experiences into the conversation. We talked about our lives, our similarities and differences, service, relationships, accessibility, faith and what we're carrying into our Fourth Day. We also talked about the incredible community surrounding Emmaus and the importance of continuing afterward through reunion groups, worship, prayer, study and Christian fellowship. And then there's the agape. I came home with letters and expressions of love from family, friends, mentors and people representing many different chapters of my life. Some made me laugh. Some made me think. Some touched me deeply. They reinforced something I'm still processing: Sometimes we don't fully know what our lives have meant to other people until they tell us. De Colores! Throughout the evening you heard us say: De Colores! 🌈✝️ It's a joyful expression deeply associated with the Emmaus community and the colorful, renewed life of Christian faith. And if this conversation has made you curious about the Walk to Emmaus, don't take my episode as a sales pitch or an attempt to pressure you into attending. Learn about it, ask questions and decide for yourself whether it's something you'd like to explore. Jonathan and JD generously dropped official Emmaus resources into our live Zoom chat during the episode. Jonathan provided the Houston North Emmaus Community website and The Upper Room's community directory, while JD shared the main Walk to Emmaus resource. Learn More About Walk to Emmaus For information about the program itself and to begin looking for an Emmaus community near you: The Upper Room — Walk to Emmaus For listeners here in the greater Houston area: Houston North Emmaus Community For Texas listeners, Jonathan also shared: Find Walk to Emmaus Communities in Texas These resources were shared during the live conversation specifically so listeners interested in Emmaus could learn more. Continue Your Own Blissful Connections Journey Maybe Emmaus isn't what brought you to this episode. Maybe you're working through your own questions about faith and spirituality. Maybe it's relationships. Communication. Forgiveness. Boundaries. Personal growth. Life transitions. Or maybe you're simply trying to determine what comes next. It gave me things to carry forward. Priority. Grace. Piety. Study. Action. Forgiveness. Community. Perseverance. And now comes the part that matters: Living them. The outside world is still here. The emails came back. The responsibilities came back. The radio show came back. The difficult days will come back too. But I came home looking at some of those things differently. The Walk lasted three days. I'll spend the rest of my life discovering what I do with them. My Fourth Day has begun. The Case Against Endless Swiping

Sometimes live broadcasting doesn't go according to plan—and this episode became a perfect example of adapting when life throws you a curveball! I originally planned to welcome Rik Foote, founder of HAEVN, to Blissful Connections for a conversation about dating-app burnout and a different approach to modern matchmaking. When Rik wasn't able to join the live broadcast, I did what broadcasters sometimes have to do: I pivoted. Instead of abandoning the topic, I turned Episode 58 into a solo conversation exploring something I've experienced personally for years: Has endless swiping actually made it harder for us to find meaningful connection? The Dating-App Grind I've used online dating platforms over the years, and in this episode I share some of my own experiences with the frustrations that can come along with them—from endless profiles and superficial judgments to fake accounts, scams, ghosting, choice overload, and the feeling that you're constantly searching without actually getting any closer to a relationship. We explore whether having access to seemingly endless choices can create decision paralysis rather than opportunity. When another person becomes one profile among hundreds or thousands, how easy is it to swipe past someone who might actually have been worth getting to know? A Different Idea: HAEVN Although Rik wasn't able to join me live, I explore the approach behind HAEVN based on the information Rik provided ahead of our scheduled conversation. HAEVN describes itself as a modern matchmaking network rather than another traditional dating app. Its compatibility-first approach focuses on factors such as relationship intent, preferences, values, lifestyle, boundaries, and real-world compatibility. Instead of giving members an endless catalog of people to browse, the idea is to use technology to identify potentially meaningful introductions. The philosophy that particularly caught my attention was simple: Technology should support the introduction—not become the relationship. Once two people are introduced, ultimately the technology has to get out of the way and allow two human beings to discover what happens next. Compatibility vs. Chemistry That leads me into one of my favorite parts of this episode: Compatibility and chemistry aren't the same thing. A matchmaking system might identify two people who appear incredibly compatible, but it can't manufacture attraction, laughter, affection, conversation, or that intangible spark between two people. And the opposite can happen, too. Two people can experience tremendous chemistry while discovering that their values, communication styles, boundaries, lifestyles, or long-term goals simply don't fit. So how much can technology actually tell us about whom we should date? Where does the algorithm end and the human relationship begin? Dating, Disability and Looking Beyond the Profile I also bring my own experience as a blind man into the conversation. Modern dating platforms can be heavily visual, and that raises an important question: What happens to people with disabilities—or anyone who doesn't necessarily thrive in a swipe-first environment—when photographs and split-second judgments dominate the experience? Could starting with values, communication, intentions and compatibility encourage us to become curious about the whole person rather than immediately reducing someone to a photograph? It's a conversation I would especially love to continue with other people with disabilities. Could Technology Actually Make Dating More Human? Ultimately, Episode 58 asks a bigger question than whether one matchmaking service succeeds: What if we redesigned online dating around helping people leave the technology and meet each other? What if success wasn't measured by how long someone stayed on an app? What if the technology learned enough about two people to recognize a potentially meaningful connection, introduced them—and then got out of their way? And if you could redesign modern dating yourself, what would YOU change? Would you eliminate swiping? Bring back matchmaking? Meet people organically? Or combine the best pieces of all three? Hopefully, This Isn't the End of the Rik Conversation! I still hope to welcome Rik Foote to Blissful Connections so he can explain HAEVN in his own words and answer the questions I originally prepared for him. If we're able to reschedule, we'll consider this episode Part One—and bring Rik back for a Season 2 conversation where we can go directly to the founder and dig deeper into HAEVN's philosophy, matchmaking process, compatibility, accessibility, expansion, and vision for the future of dating. Until then, you can Learn More About HAEVN. Continue Your Own Blissful Connections Journey If this episode has you thinking about your own relationships, communication, boundaries, personal growth, or where you are in life right now, you don't have to figure everything out by yourself. My Blissful Connections Intro Session is a private, one-on-one Zoom conversation with me for up to one hour. It's $50 with no ongoing commitment required—a chance for us to talk about what's happening in your life and explore what moving forward could look like. Closing the 18-Inch Gap: When Your Heart and Mind Don’t Agree — with Edwin Soler

What if the distance between the life you’re living and the life you truly want is closer than you think—maybe only 18 inches away? ❤️🧠 In this powerful episode of Blissful Connections, I sat down with Edwin Soler, Dream Realization Partner, author of Closing the 18-Inch Gap, and host of the Closing the 18-Inch Gap Podcast. And wow—this conversation went places! Edwin shared the deeply personal story of unexpectedly leaving his 27-year career as a probation officer. What initially left him blindsided and devastated eventually opened the door to healing, freedom, faith, and an entirely new mission. We explored Edwin’s concept of the “18-inch gap”—the space between the dreams and desires in our hearts and the fears, limiting beliefs, doubts, and expectations that can take over our minds. Edwin explained how the concept originated from a pastor’s teaching about the approximate distance between the heart and mind. Sometimes what we truly desire is much closer than it feels—but closing that gap requires emotional, mental, and spiritual growth. We talked about what happens when life forces us into a transition we never planned for, why losing something can sometimes redirect us toward something greater, and why pursuing a dream doesn’t require knowing every step before beginning. Edwin and I explored: Recognizing when your heart and mind aren’t aligned Where limiting beliefs come from and why we hold onto them Why a persistent dream or passion may be trying to tell us something Expanding our comfort zones gradually rather than expecting ourselves to make enormous leaps Avoiding perfectionism and the comparison trap Discovering your “why” before becoming consumed with the “how” Moving from dreaming to doing Writing down goals and taking small, courageous first steps Career transitions and unexpected new beginnings Releasing the need for everyone else’s approval Faith, trusting God’s timing, and moving forward when we can only see the next few steps Why healing and personal growth are ongoing journeys Why meaningful success requires patience, persistence, community, and genuine human connection Using AI as a tool rather than a crutch , while remembering that technology can’t replace authentic human relationships We also talked candidly about the myth of instant success. Dreams take work. Building a podcast, coaching practice, speaking career, book, business—or almost anything meaningful—doesn’t happen overnight. Sometimes progress means taking one small action today and allowing the next step to reveal itself tomorrow. And this episode wasn’t just Edwin and me talking! Our live audience became part of the experience. Sylvia shared her own story of moving forward after the ending of a long-term relationship and creating a new chapter in her life. My mom, Doy, also joined the conversation and shared her dream of developing a ministry program for vacationers in Mexico, creating opportunities for English-speaking visitors to experience faith and community while traveling. I shared parts of my own journey as well, including career transitions, accessibility barriers, advocating for myself, and learning that sometimes an opportunity ending doesn’t mean our story is ending. That made this episode feel like exactly what Blissful Connections is supposed to be—a conversation where different lives and experiences can come together, learn from one another, and remind us that none of us has to navigate change completely alone. One message kept coming through: It’s never too late. You don’t have to build the entire dream tomorrow. Maybe your first step is writing down the goal. Maybe it’s buying the domain name. Maybe it’s making the phone call. Maybe it’s joining a supportive community. Maybe it’s asking for help. Or maybe it’s finally giving yourself permission to say: “This is something I really want.” As Edwin reminded us, closing the gap isn’t necessarily something we accomplish once and never think about again. Growth continues. New fears appear. New dreams emerge. Our comfort zones expand. Sometimes success begins with simply taking the next step. Manic Mondays: Turning the Most Dreaded Day of the Week into a Fresh Start

It’s just another manic Monday! 😂☀️ Why do Mondays get such a bad reputation? Is Monday itself really the problem—or is it what Monday represents? In this solo episode of Blissful Connections, I’m taking a lighter look at the Monday blues and exploring why the beginning of the week can bring stress, dread, exhaustion, and that familiar feeling of wishing the weekend could last just a little longer. From alarm clocks and traffic to overflowing inboxes, responsibilities, Sunday-night anticipation, work environments, and relationships, there are plenty of reasons Mondays can feel overwhelming. But sometimes our feelings about Monday can also tell us something important about what's happening in our lives. And here's the good news: Monday doesn't have to be perfect to become a fresh start. ☀️ In This Episode I talk about: Why Mondays have developed such a terrible reputation The Sunday-night blues and anticipating the week ahead Why sometimes we don't actually dislike Monday—we dislike what we're returning to How meaningful work can completely change the way Monday feels Preparing ahead without sacrificing your entire Sunday to worrying about tomorrow Creating simple Monday rituals with music, breakfast, reflection, prayer, or something else you enjoy Setting one achievable goal instead of overwhelming yourself Recognizing when exhaustion, loneliness, job dissatisfaction, relationships, or poor boundaries may be underneath your Monday dread Focusing on what you can control instead of everything you can't Giving yourself permission to reset at any point during the day Letting go of perfection and beginning the week with grace I also welcomed participation from listeners on Facebook and invited everyone to think about a simple question: What would make your Monday better? Sometimes the answer doesn't require changing your entire life. A small adjustment, a meaningful connection, or simply giving yourself a little more grace can change the direction of your day. 💙 Your Home for Everything Blissful Connections Want to listen to previous episodes, learn more about the show, participate live, explore my coaching options, or find all the ways to connect with me?
