Q&A Immigrating to New Zealand: Residency Applications & Standing Out on LinkedIn Ep9

Should you handle your residency application yourself or use a licensed immigration adviser? And how can you stand out to New Zealand employers when you're applying from overseas? In this live Q&A, Brett Corlett is joined by licensed immigration adviser Desire Lindeque from MIS to discuss the risks of misinterpreting residency requirements and the practical steps migrants can take to prepare for their job search. Des introduces Immigration New Zealand's wage calculator tool and explains why understanding wage thresholds and eligible work experience periods matters. She also discusses why using a calculator should not replace checking your individual eligibility before submitting an application. The conversation tackles the challenges of the New Zealand job market, how recruitment priorities can affect offshore applicants, and why getting occupational registration sorted early can help you become ready for employment. Brett and Des also explain how to make LinkedIn work harder for you: building targeted connections, showing your personality, and turning a list of duties into measurable achievements that help employers see the value you bring. They answer questions about IT project management, construction, and the licensing process for overseas-qualified plumbers. If you're planning your move or working towards residency, this episode offers honest insights to help you prepare carefully and approach your job search with a clearer plan. Q&A Immigrating to New Zealand: Schools, Finding Work & Green List Residency Ep8

Moving to New Zealand involves more than finding a job and getting a visa. What will school be like for your children, and how will everyday family life change? In this live Q&A, Brett Corlett is joined by licensed immigration adviser Desire Lindeque from MIS to discuss schooling, job hunting, and understanding your requirements for Green List residency. Drawing on their experiences as migrant parents, Brett and Des share how their children have adjusted to New Zealand schools, including school hours, homework, practical learning programmes, and support for different learning needs. They also chat about rental inspections and getting used to managing household chores and gardening themselves. The conversation covers finding teaching jobs from overseas, connecting with specialist recruiters, and why LinkedIn networking can help you build relationships with potential employers. Des explains why checking your occupational registration and residency requirements before applying matters, and shares updates from an immigration industry conference on a possible Green List review and visa processing times. If you're planning a move with your family or already working towards residency, this episode offers practical insights to help you prepare, ask the right questions, and feel less alone on the journey. Struggling to Get Job Interviews in New Zealand? Start with Fixing Your LinkedIn & SEEK Profiles

This episode is a little different from our usual Soft Landing NZ podcast episodes. So many immigrants are struggling to find jobs in New Zealand. I also see LinkedIn being heavily underutilised, with many people having incomplete profiles that don't clearly communicate their experience, skills or the value they could offer an employer. I really want to help. That's why I've decided to give everyone free access to the complete first module of our New Zealand Job Search Masterclass. In this practical training, I'll guide you step by step through improving and optimising both your LinkedIn and SEEK profiles. We'll cover: • Choosing an appropriate profile photo and banner • Writing a stronger LinkedIn headline • Improving your About section • Presenting your work experience and achievements clearly • Adding relevant skills and keywords • Strengthening your SEEK profile • Making it easier for New Zealand recruiters and hiring managers to find and understand you A strong profile won't guarantee that you'll secure a job, but it can help you present yourself more professionally and ensure employers have a clearer understanding of your experience and what you could bring to their organisation. Watch the module, work through your own profiles and apply what you learn. There's no obligation to enrol in the complete masterclass. I hope this free training gives you a practical place to start. If you find the module helpful and would like support with the rest of your New Zealand job search, you can access the complete New Zealand Job Search Masterclass here: https://soft-landing-nz-inner-circle.circle.so/checkout/job-search-masterclass The complete masterclass goes beyond updating your profiles. Why Does Networking Matter So Much When Looking for a Job in NZ? | Why you not getting interviews in NZ | Q3

You can bring your experience, qualifications and certifications with you to New Zealand, but there's one thing you can't pack into your suitcase: the professional relationships you spent years building back home. And that matters more than many immigrants realise. In this episode of the Soft Landing Podcast, I explore why networking and professional relationships matter so much when looking for a job in New Zealand, whether you're already here or still searching from overseas. After more than 20 years of building my career in South Africa, I arrived in New Zealand and had to start rebuilding those professional connections from scratch. And when you consider how small the New Zealand job market can become once you narrow it down to your particular industry, profession and location, relationships matter. In this episode, I talk about: Why your experience alone may not be enough Why professional relationships have influenced opportunities throughout my own career Why New Zealand's smaller job market makes connections particularly important Why networking isn't about asking strangers for jobs How relationships can lead to opportunities before they're even advertised Why repeatedly applying through SEEK and LinkedIn shouldn't be your entire job-search strategy Why immigrants need to deliberately rebuild their professional network in New Zealand This isn't a step-by-step guide on how to network. This series is about understanding the why behind the challenges immigrants face when trying to find work in New Zealand. Because once you understand why networking matters, you can start thinking differently about how you're approaching your New Zealand job search. Want help putting this into practice? I've created the New Zealand Job Search Masterclass specifically for immigrants who are already in New Zealand or planning to move here. It teaches you how to approach the New Zealand job market differently, build meaningful professional connections and create opportunities rather than simply mass-applying for jobs. Why am I applying for jobs but not getting interviews? | Why Am I Not Getting Interviews in New Zealand | Q1

You've sent 20 applications. Then 30. Then 50. And still… no interviews. Eventually you start asking yourself: "What am I doing wrong?" I know that feeling because I've been there myself. In this first episode of my Why You're Not Getting Interviews in New Zealand series, I'm tackling one of the biggest questions I hear from migrants trying to find work in New Zealand: Why am I applying for jobs but not getting interviews? When I was nine months into life in New Zealand, my employer announced a restructure. As the primary earner in our family at the time, I panicked and started applying for job after job. The interviews didn't come. What I eventually realised was that my experience hadn't suddenly become worthless because I'd moved countries. My approach needed to change. In this episode, I share that experience and some of the things I had to understand about positioning myself, adapting to the New Zealand job market and rebuilding the professional connections I'd spent years developing back home. This series is about answering the WHY behind the job-search challenges migrants face in New Zealand. Because once you understand why something isn't working, you can start changing your approach. Want a structured plan for your NZ job search? I've put what I've learned into the Soft Landing NZ Job Search Masterclass to help you understand the market, position yourself properly, build the right connections and give yourself a better chance of getting interviews.
