    Congress Just Introduced Their First Plug-In Solar Bill

    What’s newOn Monday, U.S. Rep. Rob Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, introduced the Socket Full of Sunshine Act. Even if this doesn’t pass, it 100% wins the prestigious “Aaron Nichols’s best-named congressional bill of 2026” award. Quick refresher: plug-in solar (also called balcony solar) means that someone can buy and use a solar inverter that plugs straight into a regular wall outlet without local permitting or utility permission, so long as the panels attached to the inverter do not exceed the allowed wattage. This generally means 1-4 solar panels can be used at once. I tested one of these inverters and a few panels on my own house, and will be releasing a full breakdown next week, so subscribe if you’d like to see that when it releases. Each state’s public utility commission (PUC), the regulators who set the rules for your power company, would have to open a process on plug-in solar within one year of the bill passing and finish within two. I am unsure what “open a process” would mean, but I’m sure that’s better than nothing.Help lower-income families afford a kit. Low- and moderate-income households could get up to $1,000 off. That matters, since a 1,200-watt kit (the biggest size the bill allows) can cost more than $2,000. It’s important to note that if you buy the inverter separately, and then buy whatever panels you can find on Facebook Marketplace or as overstock from a solar distributor, you can get a system for substantially cheaper.Protect renters. To get the rebate money, states would have to protect renters’ right to use plug-in solar.Favor American-made kits. Only kits with more than 55% American-made parts (by cost) would qualify for rebates.This bill almost certainly won’t pass before the current Congress wraps up. But it can be reintroduced in January, and it probably won’t be alone. Bright Saver, a nonprofit that advocates for plug-in solar, says it’s working with three more House members and one senator from a red state on their own bills. It’s only a matter of time before plug-in solar becomes federally legal and is no longer a states’ rights issue.

    NJ and PA #1 and #3 for Energy Price Increases

    Over the last three years, New Jersey has seen the biggest electricity rate increases of any state. Over the last five years, Pennsylvania has seen the third-biggest rate increase. This federal agency tracks what Americans pay for power across the country and shows how bad things have gotten for New Jersey and Pennsylvania ratepayers: New Jersey: up 36.8% in three years. That’s more than double the national average of 15.4%.Pennsylvania: up 58.5% in five years, almost double the national average of 32.4%.In the plainest terms possible, this means that if you live in New Jersey, and you used to pay $100/month for electricity, and have changed nothing about your life or electricity usage in the last three years, you’re now paying $136.80 per month for the same service that has not improved or changed in any way. In Pennsylvania, if the same scenario is true, then you’re paying $158.50 per month, when you were paying $100 in 2021. Now, it’s an imperfect comparison to go by percentage rise, because New Jersey’s energy was more expensive than Pennsylvania’s to begin with. But the fact remains that energy bills are going up at record rates. It’s especially bad in the Northeast.     What’s newThis weekend, October 2-4, the American Solar Energy Society’s National Solar Tour is hosting its National Solar Tour. This means that homeowners with solar are opening their homes to the public. This is one of our favorite times of the year at Exact Solar, and we are very proud to be a sponsor.
