Drift Is Inevitable. Direction Is Intentional. with Dr. Cynthia Bentzen-Mercer | Ep. 69

On this week’s episode of The True North Show I am joined by Dr. Cynthia Bentzen-Mercer, an extraordinary woman who has a wonderful way of explaining something that we have all experienced in our lives in a very practical way. Cynthia shares her story of how certain areas of her life were drifting because she wasn’t paying attention to them and her intention was missing. She uses her experiences to help others who have drifted and gives them practical tools and processes to find the direction and intention that was either lost or forgotten about. It is a truly wonderful conversation and one you won’t want to miss. Bio: Dr. Cynthia Bentzen-Mercer is a human capital strategist, executive advisor, board-certified executive coach, international speaker, and bestselling author whose work explores what happens when successful people and organizations realize that the direction they are traveling may no longer be the direction they consciously chose. After a 30-year corporate career, including 13 years as a C-suite executive, Cynthia experienced an unexpected career transition that forced her to confront a question many high achievers eventually face: What happens when the identity, success, and life you worked so hard to build no longer fully align with who you are becoming? That experience helped shape her work around The Law of Drift and The Discipline of Direction™, grounded in a simple premise: every human system drifts. Individuals drift. Teams drift. Organizations drift. Direction requires intention. Today, Cynthia advises CEOs, boards, family enterprises, and executive teams on human capital strategy, succession, leadership capability, and organizational alignment. She also coaches accomplished leaders navigating pivotal moments in their careers and lives. Cynthia is the author of Human Capital Investment Strategy and a USA Today and LA Times bestselling co-author of Now, Near, Next. She holds a PhD and MBA and spent much of her career studying and leading the human side of organizational performance. Her work now brings together decades of executive experience, research, coaching, and her own life transitions to help people recognize when they are operating on autopilot, reconnect with what matters, and intentionally choose what comes next. Her guiding belief is simple: Drift is inevitable. Direction is intentional. On this week’s episode of The True North Show I am joined by Tom Fox who shares the incredible account of what happened in Texas Hill Country in July 2025 when the Guadalupe River raged and flooded the community. Practical Intuition with Carolyn Ulitsky | Ep. 63

On this week’s episode of The True North Show I am joined by Carolyn Ulitsky, an incredibly woman who has introduced me to the concept of practical intuition. Carolyn works with clients to identify the physical pain in their bodies and then tune in to what the body is actually trying to say. Her work is grounded in personal experiences and events that has seen her work evolve with her over the last three decades. There is so much that we cover in this conversation, be sure to grab something that you can take notes on, you are definitely going to need it! BIO Carolyn Ulitsky, founder of SomaWise Muscle Therapy, BodyMind practitioner, Certified Master BodyMind Coach, and author whose work explores one of the most fascinating and profound relationships any of us will ever encounter, the one between our body and our lived experience. For more than three decades, Carolyn has worked with the body through hands on muscle therapy, movement, somatic awareness, conversation, and what she beautifully describes as practical intuition. Her work began with the physical helping people experiencing pain, tension, and muscular dysfunction. But over time, she began noticing something far deeper. The body, as Carolyn discovered, was communicating well beyond where it hurt. A tight jaw, guarded shoulders, a breath that could never quite fully release. These were not just physical symptoms, they were the body's way of telling a story. That curiosity shaped everything and today, at the heart of Carolyn's philosophy sits a simple but powerful idea – the body is not the problem. The body is part of the conversation. Through SomaWise, Carolyn works with people both in person and virtually guiding them through physical discomfort, life transitions, identity shifts, grief, and that deeply uncomfortable space between who they have been and who they are becoming. Her MIAA framework (Mindful, Intuitive, Aligned, Action) invites people to slow down, listen inward and allow their next step to come from a place of genuine alignment rather than force. Carolyn's work has also evolved beautifully beyond the treatment room into writing, speaking, retreats and immersive experiences including BodyMind Italy bringing together place, embodiment, reflection and community in the most extraordinary way. Underlying it all is the belief that we don't have to abandon ourselves in order to change our lives. Sometimes the next chapter isn't about becoming someone entirely new, sometimes it's about creating enough space to receive ourselves, trust what we already know, and come home forward.
