Ron Hetrick - Gen Z Launch Gap: When the Career Path Changes

What happens when the career path you were taught to follow no longer seems to lead where you expected? In this episode of Pivot Point: Strategy for Change, Nik Michael continues the Gen Z Launch Gap series with Ron Hetrick, Principal Economist at Lightcast, for a wide-ranging conversation about what young adults are facing as they try to enter today’s labor market, and what parents, educators, and young people may need to reconsider. Ron brings both data and personal experience to the conversation. Years ago, while working successfully at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, he found himself increasingly unhappy and afraid to leave the security he had built. Then a sentence on a cassette tape stopped him in his tracks: “You’ll change when the pain of staying the same exceeds the pain of change.” The next day, he began looking for another path. That experience becomes a powerful lens for examining the choices facing young people today. Ron and Nik discuss why sending application after application may not be enough, why relationships and initiative matter so much in getting hired, what AI is and isn’t doing to entry-level work, and why some college majors are producing far more graduates than the labor market can readily absorb. They also confront one of the most uncomfortable questions in the Gen Z Launch Gap: Why do we continue to steer so many young people toward the same educational and professional paths while overlooking entire categories of necessary, skilled work? Ron challenges the status hierarchy surrounding college and the skilled trades, arguing that our culture has learned to esteem some forms of work while quietly demeaning others. He also explains why “skilled trades” means far more than electricians and plumbers, and why families need to broaden the range of careers young people are exposed to before asking them to make life-shaping decisions. For parents wondering what to say at the kitchen table, young adults questioning whether the path they chose still fits, and anyone caught between the future they expected and the reality they are encountering, this conversation is about more than finding a job. It is about learning to recognize when the signals are telling us that something has changed, becoming aware of what those signals mean, and creating enough space to make a different choice. That is where a Pivot Point can begin. What is your pivot point? lightcast.io pivotpointnikmichael.com nikmichael.substack.com

What Is a Pivot Point? The Day I Knew

We usually tell the story of change afterward. That’s when I left. That’s when I changed careers. That’s when I finally said no. But I’ve always been more interested in something else: what happened before that sentence begins? In this episode, I take you back to an afternoon more than thirty years ago that became my pivot point. I was working in airline sales when the director of reservations started yelling at me in front of his entire department. Thirty or forty people put down their phones to watch. I froze. My body went heavy and stiff. I said nothing and walked away. By the time I got back to my office, something had become very clear. This was not my calling. Not the day I left. The day I knew. From there, I walk through the six steps I’ve been developing over decades of clinical work: signal, awareness, choice, action, change and integration. It starts with a signal, a thought, a feeling or tension in the body, often before we can name it. It moves through the moment we finally see what’s been happening and the choice that opens up once we can. And it ends with integration, the step most of us skip, where the experience lands and becomes part of who we are. And the question I want you to sit with this week: where in the sequence are you getting stuck? A few times a day, stop and ask yourself: What am I aware of right now? What am I feeling? What’s happening in my body? You don’t have to fix anything. Just notice. Something happens in us before something happens through us. What is your pivot point? What’s your pivot point? Gen Z Launch Gap: | Jason Kuperman - Inside the Room With a 20-Year Marketing Leader

Jason Kuperman has spent two decades building and leading marketing teams, so his read on Gen Z doesn't come from a research report — it comes from performance reviews, hiring decisions, and the daily work of managing them. He's also made one of the sharper career pivots you'll hear on this show, walking away from an architecture degree to become employee number one at a digital advertising group before "digital" meant much of anything. In this episode, Jason and Nik get into what's actually driving the behavior that gets read as laziness, distraction, or an unwillingness to pay dues — and where he thinks the criticism holds up. Jason argues Gen Z isn't checked out so much as allergic to inefficiency, shaped by watching corporate dysfunction get packaged into every sitcom and YouTube clip until nothing could hide anymore. He also opens up about coaching young employees through the "mentor mindset," what happens when a team is told to figure something out together instead of being handed a playbook, and why he's still wrestling with how much to explain the why to his own Gen Z kids at home. This conversation is part of the ongoing Gen Z Launch Gap series, sitting alongside conversations with a high school guidance counselor, executive coaches, recruiters, a college admissions advisor, and a family therapist — all circling the same widening gap from different vantage points. The Gen Z Launch Gap: Why "Lazy" Is the Wrong Word (with Erin Treacy)

Is Gen Z actually lazy — or has nobody taught them the difference between being managed and being mentored? In this episode of the Gen Z Launch Gap series on Pivot Point: Strategy for Change, host Nik Michael sits down with executive coach and leadership consultant Erin Treacy — an employer, a workplace strategist, and the parent of five Gen Z kids — for an honest look at the perceptions shaping how this generation is hired, managed, and misunderstood. Erin and Nik break down the most common Gen Z workplace stereotypes — lazy, entitled, too easily offended, can't take feedback — and which ones actually hold up. They dig into why so many young adults arrive at their first job having been managed but never mentored, why chasing a "dream job" might be the wrong goal entirely, and the real difference between passion and aptitude when choosing a career path. Erin also unpacks the quiet self-sabotage behind imposter syndrome, why waiting to feel confident before taking action can cost a young adult years, and how the language around "work-life balance" can shut down a conversation with an older manager before it even starts. Whether you're a Gen Z professional trying to navigate your first real job, or a parent trying to understand what your kid is actually up against in today's job market, this conversation offers a practical, two-sided look at closing the gap between generations at work. Topics covered: Gen Z workplace stereotypes, mentor vs. manager, career advice for young professionals, imposter syndrome, work-life balance at work, parenting Gen Z, entry-level job market, executive coaching, generational leadership, career confidence. Jen Wilson - Leading Gen Z in the Workforce

Leading Gen Z: Setting the Sandbox and Stepping Back | Gen Z Launch Gap Series There's a generation walking into the workforce right now that never knew a world without a screen in front of them — and they watched the institutions around them wobble in real time. Academia. Sports. Trust in leadership itself. So when they show up skeptical of the conventional path, that's not a character flaw. It's a completely reasonable response to what they've actually lived through. In this episode of the Gen Z Launch Gap series, Nik Michael sits down with Jen R. Wilson, an executive and team coach with over 25 years of experience guiding leaders and organizations through growth, uncertainty, and high-stakes change. Jen has been here before — she led teams through the arrival of the millennial generation, and she's carrying those hard-won lessons directly into how she coaches leaders navigating Gen Z today. Together they explore what actually makes this generation different, why the old management playbook doesn't translate, and the "sandbox" philosophy Jen returns to again and again: set clear parameters, then have the discipline to step out of the way. Jen also makes the case that the real work often belongs to the leader, not the team — the discomfort of watching things change is something to sit with, not something to manage out of the people bringing that change. This conversation is for the owners, managers, and founders standing on the other side of the ladder, trying to lead a workforce that doesn't operate on the same assumptions they came up on. Inside the Gen Z Launch Gap with Shirish Agarwal

There’s a gap opening up between what an entire generation was promised and what they’re actually finding when they enter the workforce — and almost nobody is naming it clearly. In this episode of the Gen Z Launch Gap series, I sit down with Shirish Agarwal, author of Gen Z to Gen Zero, to examine a difficult reality: the entry-level job market wasn’t simply disrupted by AI. It was redesigned. And in many industries, the first rung of the career ladder that young adults were told to expect is no longer there. We talk about what parents still believe about careers that may no longer be true, why the traditional path from degree to first job is breaking down, and where the “new first rung” actually exists. Shirish also breaks down the four things increasingly separating candidates from the crowd: skills, projects, distribution, and reputation. But this isn’t just a story about what Gen Z has lost. We also look at where this generation has a genuine advantage — one that employers may be overlooking — and which industries are still hiring in more traditional ways. This is the anchor conversation in The Gen Z Launch Gap, an ongoing series about the widening distance between how young adults were told the transition to work would happen and what they’re actually encountering. It’s for Gen Z trying to understand the new rules — and for the parents trying to understand what changed. If you listened to our previous installment with Kim Steiner and Amy Krause of Fource Recruiting, this conversation takes the issue one step further: if the first rung has moved, where did it go — and how do you get there? More conversations are coming.
