he Convenience Trap: Are We Becoming Less Capable? | Dr. Rob Carter

We’ve made life easier, faster, and more convenient than ever before. But what are we giving up in exchange for all that convenience? In this episode of BE ALL IN, I sat down with Dr. Robert “Rob” Carter III, PhD, MPH, for a conversation about human performance, resilience, stress, intentional discomfort, modern convenience, and what happens when technology begins doing too much of the work for us. Dr. Carter is a U.S. Army officer, researcher, and expert in human physiology and performance. He holds a doctorate in biomedical sciences and medical physiology and a Master of Public Health in chronic disease epidemiology. His academic background includes work in emergency medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, abstracts, and technical reports, and his research has been covered by outlets including The Washington Post, Fox News, and USA Today. But what interested me most wasn’t the résumé. It was the question underneath much of Rob’s work: What keeps a human being capable in a world designed to make everything easier? We explore why simply doing hard things doesn’t necessarily build resilience, the difference between productive discomfort and unnecessary suffering, how stress and recovery drive adaptation, and why some amount of friction may be necessary for us to remain physically and mentally capable. We also get into convenience versus dependence. GPS. Smartphones. AI. Automation. At what point does a useful tool begin replacing a capability we should have maintained ourselves? And as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life, how do we take advantage of what it can do without outsourcing our ability to think, learn, navigate, struggle, and solve problems for ourselves? Rob is the coauthor, with Dr. Kirti Salwe Carter, of The Morning Mind: Use Your Brain to Master Your Day and Supercharge Your Life. Their upcoming book, The Convenience Trap: How to Regain Control in a World of Instant Gratification, explores the consequences of increasingly frictionless living and the idea of intentionally preserving useful forms of difficulty rather than eliminating every inconvenience from our lives. This conversation ultimately isn’t about rejecting comfort or technology. It’s about learning to use both without allowing them to quietly reduce our capacity. Walking With Marcus Aurelius | What Rome Taught Me About Legacy, Character & Living Well

I came to Rome thinking I would find Marcus Aurelius in the monuments, the ruins, and the places where he once walked. Instead, I found something else. In this episode, I explore the streets of ancient Rome, visit places connected to one of history's greatest philosopher-emperors, and reflect on the timeless lessons his life still offers today. Along the way, I wrestle with questions about purpose, responsibility, leadership, legacy, and what it means to become a better person in a world full of distractions. Marcus Aurelius never intended for Meditations to become one of the most influential books ever written. They were simply private reminders to himself—written by a man carrying the weight of an empire while trying to live with wisdom, humility, and integrity. Two thousand years later, those same ideas still challenge us. If you've ever wondered what kind of life is worth building, what will remain after you're gone, or how to stay grounded while carrying responsibility, this conversation is for you. In this episode, we explore: Walking through the Rome of Marcus AureliusThe Column of Marcus Aurelius and the PantheonStoicism beyond the quotesLeadership under pressureWhy legacy is built through character, not achievementThe question every one of us eventually has to answer: What will be left of us when we're gone?BE ALL IN is a podcast about resilience, identity, leadership, and living well while carrying the weight of modern life. The Weight of Responsibility | Dr. Heidi Abraham

What happens when the person everyone turns to for answers still wrestles with uncertainty? In this episode of BE ALL IN, I sit down with Dr. Heidi Abraham—Emergency Medicine physician, EMS Medical Director, and one of the most respected leaders in Texas EMS—to talk about the realities of carrying responsibility over the long term. But this conversation goes far beyond medicine. We explore the hidden cost of leadership, the danger of letting a career become your identity, the pressure that reveals who we really are, and the role faith plays when the answers aren't always clear. One of the most powerful moments came when Dr. Abraham admitted that despite years of experience, leadership, and responsibility, she still walks into difficult situations praying for wisdom and guidance. This episode is about more than EMS. It's about pressure. It's about purpose. It's about learning how to carry responsibility without losing yourself in the process. Topics discussed: • What pressure reveals about character • Growing up in a large faith-centered family • Why she chose emergency medicine and EMS • When work becomes your identity • Leadership and self-doubt • Boundaries, burnout, and sustainability • The sacrifices made by the people who love us • Faith under pressure • Building a life that can sustain responsibility over the long term If you're carrying a lot right now—at work, at home, or in life—I think you'll find something in this conversation that resonates. BE ALL IN is a podcast for people carrying responsibility who want to build clarity, resilience, and self-leadership without sacrificing their health, relationships, or integrity.

Who Told You Who You Are?

Most of us don't choose our first identity. We inherit it. From our families, our environment, our experiences, and the stories we've been told for years. Over time, those stories can become so familiar that we stop questioning them. We start treating them like facts. In this episode, I explore a simple story from Anthony de Mello about an eagle that spent its entire life believing it was a chicken—and why I think that story explains something important about the way many of us live. I also share the story of starting BE ALL IN, the self-doubt that almost stopped me before I ever recorded the first episode, and why the voice telling us we're not qualified is often louder than the evidence in front of us. This conversation is about identity, self-leadership, and the stories we carry about who we are. Because maybe the biggest limitation in your life isn't your ability. Maybe it's a story you've never stopped to question. In this episode: • The eagle and the chicken story from Anthony de Mello • Why most of us inherit our identity • The invisible stories that shape our lives • Self-doubt and starting something before you feel ready • Why growth begins by questioning old beliefs • How to separate who you are from who you've been told to be BE ALL IN is a podcast about pressure, responsibility, resilience, identity, recovery, leadership, and the realities of modern life. New episodes every week. What story have you been telling yourself about who you are?
