S5 E5 - Death Is Not The Enemy

There comes a point in some serious illnesses when the question changes from, “What else can we do?” to “What will bring the most comfort now?” In this episode, Kimberley explores the deeply emotional difference between preserving life and prolonging suffering. From a death doula perspective, she talks about hospice, palliative care, quality of life, comfort-focused care, and the guilt families can carry when they begin to wonder whether “more time” is always the kindest goal. She also shares a deeply personal part of Isaac’s story: his wish to explore medical aid in dying if his suffering became too great, her initial reaction as his mom, and how she later came to understand the difference between wanting someone to die and wanting someone you love to be free from unbearable suffering. This is not a conversation about giving up. It is about listening And about the painful truth that sometimes love has to learn a different language at the end of life. Content note: This episode includes discussion of terminal illness, cancer, hospice, palliative care, end-of-life decisions, medical aid in dying, coma states, suffering, and the death of a child. Nothing is described graphically, but some listeners may find the subject emotionally difficult. Please listen with care and pause if you need to. S5 E4 - Creating Your Death Plan - What Do You Actually Want?

Most of us plan for birthdays, vacations, weddings, retirement, and the future we hope to have. But very few of us ever stop to ask one of the most important questions of all: How do I want to be cared for at the end of my life? In this episode, Kimberley explores death planning from a death doula perspective...not just the legal documents, but the deeply personal questions that help define comfort, dignity, autonomy, and legacy. Who do you want in your inner circle? Who do you not want there? Who do you trust to speak for you if you can no longer speak for yourself? What does quality of life mean to you? What kind of environment would make you feel safe? What music, rituals, people, pets, or spiritual practices would you want nearby? This episode also explores funeral and burial wishes, legacy planning, digital life, belongings, pets, letters, voice recordings, living memorials, and the importance of leaving guidance for the people you love. Not every death allows time for planning. Sudden and traumatic deaths can take away the opportunity for final conversations or bedside choices. But even then, your wishes can still help guide the people left behind. A death plan cannot control how you die. But it can help the people you love know how to honor you. Content note: This episode includes discussion of death, end-of-life planning, medical decision-making, burial and cremation, sudden and traumatic death, legacy, and funeral wishes. S5 E3 - Grieving Someone Still Alive

How do you grieve someone who is still here? In this episode, Kimberley explores anticipatory grief... the grief that can begin before a death actually happens. It can show up after a terminal diagnosis, during a long illness, through dementia or cognitive decline, or anytime you begin realizing that the person, relationship, or future you knew is changing in ways you cannot stop. This episode looks at the emotional contradictions that make anticipatory grief so difficult.... loving someone deeply while already mourning them, feeling grateful for more time while also feeling exhausted, hoping for healing while preparing for loss, and sometimes even feeling relief when suffering ends. Kimberley also talks about caregiver guilt, shifting roles, fear of the future, the pressure to “stay positive,” and why knowing a death is coming does not necessarily make you more prepared for it. Anticipatory grief is not giving up. It is what can happen when love begins to understand that time is becoming precious. Content note: This episode includes discussion of terminal illness, dementia and cognitive decline, caregiving, hospice, end-of-life decisions, fear, guilt, relief, and the death of loved ones. S5 E2 - What I've Learned From The Dying

There are things about dying that can be frightening when we don’t understand them. In this episode, Kimberley shares what she has learned from sitting with people at the end of life, both as a death doula and through deeply personal loss. She talks about the normal physical changes that can happen as the body begins to slow, why those changes are not always signs of suffering, and how presence can become more important than having the perfect words. She also reflects on what it felt like to witness the difference between a living body and the stillness that remains after death...including memories of her grandmother and of her son, whose body finally looked peaceful after everything cancer had taken from him. This episode is about demystifying the dying process, honoring the body, and remembering that death is only one moment in the much larger story of a life. Content note:  This episode includes discussion of terminal illness, the physical dying process, hospice and end-of-life care, cancer, coma states, and the death of a child and other loved ones. Nothing is described graphically, but some listeners may find the subject emotionally difficult. Please listen with care and pause if you need to. S4 E9 - Generational Trauma - What Does It Actually Mean?

The term generational trauma is everywhere right now. But what does it actually mean? In this episode, Kimberley explores how unresolved pain, beliefs, coping mechanisms, and patterns can move through families, often without anyone realizing it. She also looks at the language we use to describe difficult relationships....and why not every ex is a narcissist, every incident isn't generational trauma, or every imperfect relationship isn't toxic. Labels can sometimes help us understand our experiences, but when they are used too casually, they can oversimplify complicated people and prevent us from examining our own patterns. Understanding generational trauma is not about blaming our families or diagnosing everyone who has hurt us. It's about becoming curious about what shaped us, taking responsibility for what belongs to us, and choosing what we no longer want to carry. S4 E8 - The Second Losses of Grief: The Losses No One Warns You About

When people talk about grief, they usually talk about the obvious loss. The person who died. The relationship that ended. The life that changed. But what about the losses that come afterward? In this season finale of Sacred Arc, Kimberley explores the often-overlooked secondary losses of grief: the loss of identity, the loss of future plans, the loss of safety, the loss of friendships, the loss of certainty, and the ways grief can quietly reshape every part of a person’s life. She also discusses intrusive thoughts, survivor’s guilt, replaying traumatic memories, the exhaustion of grief, and the difficult emotions many grieving people feel but rarely admit...including resentment, unfairness, envy, and the painful question of why someone else’s loved one survived when theirs did not. Through personal reflections on losing her son Isaac, Kimberley shares what helped her stop reliving the trauma and begin learning how to walk alongside grief rather than allowing it to consume her. This episode is a reminder that grief is not just one loss. It’s often many. And every one of them deserves compassion.
