Van Life: The Puddle Problem - Drip Feed Podcast

The Drip Feed Water Talk hosts catch up with Adam about where he’ll take his newly upgraded camper van, including Torridon, the Isle of Arran, Skye, and more Highlands travel, while emphasizing visiting off-season to reduce pressure on busy areas. They discuss how tourism strains local resources, noting Arran’s population can increase fivefold in peak season and that water has been tankered to Arran due to demand, alongside efforts to encourage mindful water use in places like Arran and Skye. Adam shares concerns about waste dumping and litter on routes like the NC500 and uses the principle “take only pictures, leave only footprints.” He reflects on appreciating tap water after running out during the Cuillin Traverse and drinking puddle water, and highlights Scotland’s Top Up Tap map plus tools like Park4Night and Campa for planning facilities, along with essentials such as a stove for coffee, a trowel, entertainment, and a filtered water bottle. They highlight wildlife and protected species, including Swallows, House martins, nationally scarce beetles, and internationally significant Pink-Footed geese at Gladhouse. Scotland's Wet: Why Save Water? - Drip Feed Podcast

Claire is joined by Brian McCarthy, Water Resource and Demand Manager at Scottish Water, and climate activist and environmental scientist Laura Anderson to discuss why saving water isn’t front of mind in Scotland despite rising pressures from climate change and seasonal demand. They explain that Scotland’s abundant rainfall and reliable infrastructure can mask the reality that Scottish Water only draws from around 400 licensed sources, and the average person uses just under 180 litres per day—far more than most people guess due to “hidden” uses like showers, toilet flushing, washing machines, dishwashers, and leaks. The episode shares practical tips: turn off running taps, use full loads and eco modes, skip pre-rinsing dishes, fix leaky toilets and taps, consider shorter showers, reuse water for plants, and avoid hoses for cars and lawns. They also discuss Scottish Water’s Dundee “monitor” project to help customers reduce usage, the energy savings from using less hot water, and using Scotland’s top-up taps to stay hydrated during heatwaves.
